The father of pediatrics, immunology and scientific medicine, Abu Bakr Al-Razi (known in the West as "Rhazes") exploited his understanding of ancient Greek philosophy to advance the medicinal sciences by light years, in the early to mid 900s. Al-Razi would be embrewed with controversy for his shift away from the works of Aristotle, towards the works of Plato. He would also be celebrated in his time, as a terrific doctor, earning the positions as the Head Physician of hospitals all across the Abbasid Caliphate.
Al-Razi commitment to scholarship would contribute to an early decline, but not before he would scalp his name in the history books as one of the most innovative medical thinkers in the Medieval era and one of the most multitalented scholars of the Islamic Golden Age.
This is part two of our series on Islamic Philosophy.

Hey everyone! We appreciate the enthusiasm and support enormously. We've tried our best to take on advice and criticism from our last video, especially regarding how loud our sound effects were and the pacing of the script. If you have any suggestions or areas of improvement for the next video, please let us know! The next video in the series will cover Al-Farabi, in particular, his works of political science/political philosophy. So if that interests you, please subscribe and stay tuned. Our series hopes to be similar to the School of Life's series on Philosophers. We hope, however, to go into more depth and (obviously) cover an area of philosophical history that they unfortunately neglected.

I see someone commented on his "heretic" aspects, as far as the study of this in academic circles from what I've seen is that it comes from his Ismaili opponent Abu Hatim Ahmad ibn Hamdan al-Razi, the two Razi's debate this is known as. As far as the reality on whether or not he rejected prophecy as a whole the evidence is a little mixed as far as I understand. For example, Prof. Sarah Stramosa and Paul Kraus believe it to be the case that he did hold anti religious views, whereas Prof. Peter Adamson and Prof. Marwan Rashed doubt that he was heretical in his views.

Good, thank you. It would be helpful to note, there is no need to call him Al-Razi; he was a Persian and razi would be more appropriate. I noted you also try to pronounce his name as Arabs would do. Surely the contemporary of his native land jut called him Razi as in RAA-Zee, meaning from Ray, like what we have to day such as Shirazi, Tehrani, etc.

Thanks a lot for your response! This is something that has been pointed out before and we are aware of. In general, we have gone for the Arabic translation of the names because that’s the spelling/name that is used in the books we’ve used as our sources.

The great medical scholar & physician Razi was totally opposed to Islamic beliefs and was an especially tragic figure whose unorthodoxy outraged an emir who ordered that his head be beaten with his book until either the book or his head broke. He became blind in both eyes as a result, and he died soon after. - see Bk “Islam And Science” by Pakistan’s top physicist Prof Perez Hoodbhoy who has a section called “ Five Great Heretics”, all famous scholars who suffered under Islamic orthodoxy.

Thank you for this series. You left out, this Polymath also rejected the Quran and his observations on some Muslims behaviour is remarkably accurate to this day. He was beaten over the head with his books for his position on the Quran, when he became blind Muslims then claimed it was from God for his rejection of their book.

Hey, thanks for the comment. In general we’ve avoided some of the controversial aspects of these philosophers lives. The anecdote you’ve shared is very interesting and we are aware of it. Many people believe al-Razi was a heretic. We mention this in passing. In general, we don’t feel like we are in a position to really make a judgement claim like that - and among historians whether he was a heretic or not was hotly debated. Nonetheless, thank you so much for watching and engaging with the topics. We’re really excited to be releasing Ibn Sina soon so please stay tuned. Thanks again!
