What a great song, based on one of the famous Aesop's Fables from thousands of years ago. And absolutely full of metaphors and allegories to some unfortunate characteristics we can encounter in human nature, if we don't use good judgment about some people.

Rest in Peace Oscar Brown Jr who recorded this song in 1963,also Al Wilson who re-recorded it in 1963. Oscar was a black civil rights activist who did most of this by reciting our history in spoken word version . He was also a singer and more and I hate Trump and his derangers are only hearing this song because dummy recited it at a rally years ago. Brown words could scorch your soul to its core when reciting our black history in America. This even when reading an old slave auction poster using the tone of those slave master. As usual Trump never gets permission to use others works, songs and since Brown passed in 2005 I doubt he even asked his family to recite his lyrics to this song. If Brown was alive he would be ethering Trump ,his support left and write nit just about this but them period. But either way the snake describes him, them and want he unleashed on us all.

@@Barking914Oscar Brown wrote these lyrics, recorded the song in 1963. Oscar Brown Jr is a well known black civil rights advocate. I am sure Trump did not get his families approval to use his work in this manner based on who he was. As he used poems, our history ,tales, fables to recite our history ,then he is using it to attack another race of people He was a singer, songwriter, radio host, activist and more and the likes of Trump, his derangers hearing him recite one of his Essays based in a old slave poster saling black slaves would be shocked

I first heard this song driving to work back in the early seventies and instantly feel in love with it. I didn't stop until I found out who sang it, the soul singer Al Wilson. The meaning of this song is so true and Al did a great job I never forgot it. I still all these years later play from time to time just to remind myself to be careful who you trust because the snakes are out there. And like another Black singer only Country the late great Charlie Pride sang " The snakes craw at Night".

The Snake was written by civil rights activist, Oscar Brown in 1963 and released as a single in 1968 by Al Wilson. Interestingly the lyrics were inspired by one of Aesop’s Fable’s and is based on the story of the Farmer and the Viper; which in this case is portrayed by a ‘tender-hearted’ woman who takes in a dying snake and nurses it back to health, only to her detriment when the serpent turns on her! 0:31[The Listening Post Blog]

" king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences" " set time of the end." " This king will use his wisdom to make lies successful. He will think that he is very important. He will destroy many people without warning. " Daniel 8:19 And he said, Behold, I will make thee know what shall be in the last end of the indignation: for at the time appointed the end shall be. 20 The ram which thou sawest having two horns are the kings of Media and Persia. 21 And the rough goat is the king of Grecia: and the great horn that is between his eyes is the first king. 22 Now that being broken, whereas four stood up for it, four kingdoms shall stand up out of the nation, but not in his power. 23 And in the latter time of their kingdom, when the transgressors are come to the full, a king of fierce countenance, and understanding dark sentences, shall stand up. 24 And his power shall be mighty, but not by his own power: and he shall destroy wonderfully, and shall prosper, and practise, and shall destroy the mighty and the holy people. 25 And through his policy also he shall cause craft to prosper in his hand; and he shall magnify himself in his heart, and by peace shall destroy many: he shall also stand up against the Prince of princes; but he shall be broken without hand. *In simpler English* . 19 He said, “Now, I will explain the vision to you. I will tell you what will happen later, in the time of God’s anger. Your vision was about the set time of the end. 20 “You saw a male sheep with two horns. Those horns are the kings of Media and Persia. 21 The male goat is the king of Greece. The big horn between its eyes is the first king. 22 After that horn broke, four horns grew in its place. Those four horns are four kingdoms. Those four kingdoms will come from the nation of the first king. But they will not be as strong as the first king. 23 “When the end comes near for those kingdoms, a bold and cruel king will come. This king will tell lies. This will happen when many people have turned against God. 24 This king will be very powerful. But his power will not come from himself. He will cause terrible destruction. He will be successful in everything he does. He will destroy powerful people and even God’s people. 25 This king will use his wisdom to make lies successful. He will think that he is very important. He will destroy many people without warning. He will try to fight even God, the Prince of princes! But that cruel king will be destroyed. And it will not be human power that destroys him.

Brother one of those Soul stars who never achieved consistent start status on the charts. This one was from a few years prior to the '74' smash I guess he was promoting on this show (Show and Tell). We caught him doing back-up for Marvin Gaye at Circle Star Theater (San Carlos,CA) during Sexual Healing tour. I thought that was kinda' sad as Al Wilson held his own with any male lead singer/performer.

On her way to work one morning Down the path along side the lake A tender hearted woman saw a poor half frozen snake His pretty colored skin had been all frosted with the dew "Poor thing," she cried, "I'll take you in and I'll take care of you" She wrapped him up all cozy in a comforter of silk And laid him by her fireside with some honey and some milk She hurried home from work that night and soon as she arrived She found that pretty snake she'd taken to had been revived She clutched him to her bosom, "You're so beautiful," she cried "But if I hadn't brought you in by now you might have died" She stroked his pretty skin again and kissed and held him tight Instead of saying thanks, the snake gave her a vicious bite "I saved you," cried the woman "And you've bitten me, but why? You know your bite is poisonous and now I'm going to die" "Oh shut up, silly woman," said the reptile with a grin "You knew damn well I was a snake before you took me in

A few of the lyrics are incorrect. You doubtlessly copied them from a lyrics site. And they ALL have intentional lyrics "errors" in them because of copyright issues. One error is "comforter", the line is "coverture of silk". There are others as well. If you want the other corrections, correct that one, and reply to this, and I'll see about posting the rest here when I have the time.
