I was very happy to see the Alabama State University Mighty Marching Hornets in the Tournament Rose Bowl parade today....I have been following this great band for a few years now, and I thought these outstanding young men and women did a fantastic job representing their school and the state of Alabama...wonderful job! Very sharp...you sounded great, the Stingettes and the HoneyBeez looked sharp...keep on going, ASU! You all will have a lifetime of memories from this trip....I wish all of you well, and safe travels back! GOOD JOB!!

Lynne Ralston - As an Alabama State University Alumnus, I appreciate your feedback; it reflects a plausible attitude and reasonable level of regards for our program. Unfortunately. it's evident that the antagonist in this thread refuted your claim, but left no redeeming qualities in wording to defend his cliche for hashtags. Ironically, many critics are invested in the image of music, but lack appreciation for diversity when juxtaposition is in involved. Thank God for insightful individuals like yourself who have been following our band for a considerable amount of years and not just because they were participating in Tournament Rose Parade. ATLmediachic True. Californians know it differently here. As band and drill team competition. I’m born and raised in Cali with parents from New Orleans and Shreveport. So we were exposed. Black people everywhere enjoy this culture. But it lives in the south! I always said Californians have too much to do here. Proud note: My aunt has donated so much to HBCU they threw her a luncheon. Lost her this year 85+ RIP Aunty. #greatlady

Everytime I see one of these amazing *HBCU* marching bands it always upset me that this excellence is not mirrored in HBCU football and basketball teams. I wish more (if not most) of our top black high school athletes would choose Universities like *Alabama State, Southern, Alcorn State* etc instead of Alabama, Oklahoma, Clemson etc. There is no reason why the HBCUs should not be the gold standard in College sports especially *Football Basketball and Track* These Universities are so underfunded, and so under appreciated by our own people.

Black People......stop Hating on both ASU & FAMU because they are not playing your favorite rap song and booty dancing....I'm Proud to see my people of color having the opportunity to be apart of such a prestigious event. Most importantly, they are all getting a higher education which amazes those white spectators to see so many educated black young people in college. I don't care if they play the mickey mouse club music........I'M PROUD OF BOTH SCHOOLS! Please deter from your negative comments in regards to your own people.

Blessings I made the first comment posted I have lived in California for over 25 years I am from Jackson, Mississippi I am proud of both Colleges that they were invited to participate in The 130th🌹 Rose Parade at all, I am proud of any Historical Black Colleges are Universities and any Southern Colleges are Universities that get invited to participate at this once a year event seen around the 🌎 World by Millions, there are thousands of people that come to California to just watch the Parade, there are hundreds of suggestions for bands to perform from around the 🌎 World for this event and these 2 bands were chosen, the panel that chose them did background and watched past performances and decided they liked them they were picked over all the other Colleges, Universities, and High School Bands, and Bands from around the 🌎 World, no one I have spoken to said one negative word regarding either band they were so happy to see 2 Southern Bands Perform, and have this opportunity regardless of what each person listening and watching felt about how the bands sounded are how the young ladies performed, remember a board picked these bands after much research and decided they liked them The 🌹 Rose Board of Pasadena, California out of thousands of choices, picked them, even some people in California that are not from the South regardless of their ethnicity don't even know what a Historical Black College are University is it opens peoples minds that there are others things they were unaware of regarding the South and there Colleges and there Universities some times the Bands that perform have to perform at other events before and after the 🌹 Rose Parade I don't know if these 2 bands had to, it felt real good to see 2 Southern Bands at the 🌹 Rose Parade 2019, I hope there are bands in the 2020 🌹 Rose Parade that are Southern and from Historical Black Colleges

Aw man This used to be one of my favorite bands!!!!!... I think the arrangement of the band explains the sound... To put that much BRASS out in front and to push the woodwinds (the fullness and middle sound of the band) to the back BEHIND THE DRUMS? Mix that with elementary arrangements, no intonation... I LOVE THAT THEY WERE THERE...I just wish they were under better direction...

John H - With the exception of the two college bands participating in the Rose Bowl game, along with the Salvation Army Band, the Pasadena City College Band and Honor Guard and the Los Angeles Unified School District Band, all of whom participate every year, all other bands must submit an application with list of achievements, video, etc. It’s not easy to be chosen because hundreds of applications are submitted each year. I’m not sure where your politics angle came from, and what it implies.

Just have to work on their musicianship. Balance and intonation. Blasting notes is not better than backing off and blending. This has to be instilled from the top though. Can't blame this on the kids. At the end of the day, they are in school and helping to tear down stereotypes of us doing nothing but making crime. So keep it up and get that education. I was overjoyed to see Alabama State represent in this parade! And yes! They showed out FAMU! During my career in the USAF I continued to champion and herald the excellence of the education that awaits many youth! One thing I love about the culture of the HBCU is that it is inclusive and was ahead of its time before we knew what time it was! You feel me? Right On Alabama State! Nice marching. The band sounded a little off. Not crisp. The band looks smaller too. But Hey! Still like watching this State School. All the way from Brooklyn NYC

Y'all played it real safe...these Cali white folks would've enjoyed some real Southern flavor...the freedom given to news anchors these days, they would've highlighted you guys cuz u would've added some needed flavor to the Rose parade. The Entertainment not the same ol same ol makes it worth being out there at the crack of dawn freezing our azz off. We can comw see the flower floats, get on them, take flowers the next day. If u guys are invited this year, i really hope ASU performs, not ASU-safety

Good performance ! DM's were very conservative with their moves...a little shaky.....and needed more variation in their moves. Prairie View, Southern, Jackson St., N. Carolina A&T wouda brought more ! But Alabama still did good...sounded good and the Stingettes were breathtakingly beautiful.

To their defense... They could actually be winded. The Rose Bowl is a long parade. Like 5 or 6 miles and starts early AM with a lot of prep. And the sound bounces off those buildings. It can make it seem like they’re out of tune at times. Plus BIG change of climate for them. Im from Cali. My brother was selected head All City drum major one year. He was winded without an instrument. He slept for hours afterwards.

I'm more impressed with Alabama State, because at least they didn't try to hide who they were. Since when did FAMU start playing the Star Wars theme when marching in parades?? I know they play SOS, and they used to play Backstabbers and I used to love when they did. Alabama stayed with their roots although the drum majors could use some work. The head especially, transitions are supposed to be a lot smoother

The STAR WARS song is a song that has long been a STAPLE in the FAMU repertoire and is one of the most HISTORIC and ICONIC FAMU shows ever. I believe that the FAMU staff probably wanted to add some nostalgia to their appearance.
