Composer: Jehan-Arist[id]e Paul Alain (3 February 1911 - 20 June 1940)
Pianist: Georges Delvallée (born 15 March 1937)
A subtle, infantine, yet charmingly simple transcription of an eighteenth-century French song for piano solo; accomplished circa 1933 and posthumously published in 1992 as part of his sixteen pieces for piano as per an initiative by his sister, the organist Marie-Claire Alain.
Written exclusively in the higher registers.
Its lyrics are as follows for the first verse:
Le bon roi Dagobert
À mis sa culotte à l'envers ;
Le grand saint Éloi
Lui dit : Ô mon roi!
Votre Majesté
Est mal culottée.
C'est vrai, lui dit le roi,
Je vais la remettre à l'endroit.
And an English translation of the aforementioned verse:
The good king Dagobert
Has put his breeches on backwards;
The great Saint Éloi
Thus says: O, my king!
Your Majesty
Is poorly breeched.
That's true, thus said the King,
I'll go put them the right way 'round.
