Leading UK saxophonist Alan Barnes is joined by top pianist David Newton for or this online gig, broadcast live from West Bromwich Central Library as part of the 38th Birmingham, Sandwell & Westside Jazz Festival.
Alan Barnes:
An outstanding clarinettist, alto saxophonist and baritone saxophonist for some 40 years - apart from other instruments too numerous to mention - Alan Barnes has gained a reputation for his near-annual suites, many on themes out of Charles Dickens. 2022 is the year of Copperfield, but we at Birmingham can enjoy the instrumental skills that have brought Alan over 30 British Jazz Awards - plus his uniquely droll way with words!
‘Barnes’ melodic sense bypasses the usual scale-running clichés that pepper the playing of lesser bop disciples.’ - Peter Marsh, BBC Music Magazine.
David Newton:
16 times winner of the British Jazz Awards, David Newton is everyone’s idea of the complete jazz pianist. From swinging stride piano to meditative improvisations to beautifully supportive accompaniments to singers, he has it all. From his emergence from Leeds College of Music in 1979, he instantly commanded a place at the top table of British jazz, a place he has shown no sign of vacating.
