Excellent interview with Mr. Harrelson, Jon! It is refreshing to hear the old, classic Southern accent spoken so well, redolent with the rhythms and cadences of the Tidewater and the Deep South. While my kin here in Tennessee speak with either the accent of Greater Appalachia or something akin to Mr. Harrelson's (My mother's side of the family originally came here from old Virginia and North Carolina back in the late 18th/early 19th century), many young folks, either due to apathy or too much exposure to pop culture, sound like some version of Valley Guys or Girls! That said, I believe y'all are right about the divide being primarily a spiritual one, even if many are unaware of it. Still, I have grown utterly sick and tired of those in the church who argue that any love of family, home, or heritage, is well nigh - if not actually - a form of idolatry. The rootlessness they encourage, whether intended or not, has had deep and lasting effects on what passes for American "culture", and the very idea of family and community they ostensibly want to strengthen through their (truncated) Gospel. In fact, when I hear that now-buzzword, "community", from them, I can't help but contrast it with the forms of genuine community I saw in my family's home county, and, while imperfect, indicate a greater understanding of it in my people's blood and bones, than these so-called experts on church planting and community building in the church now.

So many of the things I like and admire about America seem to be disappearing by the day. It’s losing its spirit and character and becoming a bland, generic mess shaped by corporations and foolish ideas. You can say the same about most of Europe too. I've been subscribed to the Pipe Cottage for a good while. Alan is absolutely right that doing the Lord's will does not mean smooth sailing. One of my professors in seminary said that too many people run through open windows too fast and they forget that the Devil can open a window too. Wisdom is not in taking a road because it's easy or difficult, but in discerning spirits from God versus spirits from the Devil.

I love this man's accent! Also Kentucky is the best southern state. I used to live in Louisville a couple years ago before I took a pastoral position in south west KY. Town is 8000 people. There's problems but a lot of pros too. I hope to get some land in Kentucky too though I don't know if it's going to be over 200 acres. Anyway this was a great show thanks again Jon

Honestly, the accent demotes him almost as much as the Boston accent gives the impression of being backward and uneducated....and then I see the Dr. after his name and it blows my prejudice away. But also honestly, listening him leaving the land as is as well as being able to move into no mans land is telling. Not everyone can simply up and move where ever they want. Why don't you talk to someone who can't move at a moments notice who has nothing to fall back on and see what kind of reasoning they give. Nothing against Alan but this is the trend right now....leave and go to red states. Hear it from everyone. I think the question really should be, "what is holding you to where ever you happen to be and can you surrender all those things to be able to hear where God might be leading you?" Sometimes we need to surrender all these things one by one by truly trusting in our Lord and Savior.
@RTHenry83
@RTHenry83 Жыл бұрын
@@joeadrian2860 what if God is leading people away from Blue States and into red states? There's plenty of unbelievers in red States as well as blue. Just because it's more hostile doesn't mean it's more godly to be there. Let me ask you, do you have a family? Do you have small children and a wife? Because I'm from California and I'm never moving back. I've lived in Kentucky for 10 years and covid-19 nail in the coffin for me ever to move back. It's nearly impossible to live there or own anything or drive a car alone with the taxes of sales and income and many other things its Draconian and insane. So out of sheer responsibility for providing for your family it makes more sense to be in a place where your dollar goes further. And you don't support a state or local government that seeks to murder babies or ruin family, or indoctrinate children with your tax dollars. Of course the federal level also use the money to do unspeakable things, but at the end of the day we need to be responsible for our we are and good stewards.

I'd like to know how he approached his move in regard to a local church. I've looked a fair amount into buying land and moving but one major downside would be leaving a very good church to go somewhere with very few options, which may or may not be solid. It also usually means being further from the church, which limits the involvement in things that aren't on Sundays (i.e. we have Wednesday church, small group meetings, men's morning Bible study, etc.)
@wiggydebates3944
@wiggydebates3944 Жыл бұрын
This is a reasonable thought. The smaller counties here have A LOT of churches, but not a lot of churches to which we would be led. It took a ton of research, prayer, and patience. Definitely a good idea to look at that before a big move, especially if you are not looking to SBC, which is the lion-share around here.

It seems somewhat strange that he is all for National Forests. I’m not saying that they are all wrong, but to have that much land tied up in government ownership hurts people who make a living off the land or who would like to. Obviously he has another source of income but many who live there probably don’t. We have the same situation in AZ and there are definitely downsides to that much government ownership.
@Psalm144.1

Most individual land owners do not use their property for income east of the Mississippi River because of how thick forests are. Clearing land is hard work and requires very expensive machinery. People who do that it is because a farm was inherited and grew up learning at a young age how to grow money. Allen said so himself that he wants to mostly leave his land in a natural state. As do I with the 100 acres I own in east TN.

I understand the desire to participate in the Great Sort and flee liberal states but if we don't turn to defend what we have now, when will we? I get conservative Californians fleeing to red states, but if the most conservative all end up congregating in the back woods it will essentially hand over the entire national level of politics over. And logically speaking, we all can't move into the woods of Eastern Kentucky and buy tons of acreage. We as conservatives need to be able to lock-down the rural areas as well as come up with a robust urban political-machine to defend our interests nationally. Like it or not, our nation is ruled from cities, to abandon cities is to give the nation over completely to the regressives.

It's great to have a wider range of content on the channel, but I found Alan Harrelson unconvincing. If he can afford to own a large amount of land without trying to make a living from it, good luck to him, but I don't believe that has much to do with the American agrarian tradition, or provides a very useful example for most young men wondering how to live.
