Yeah, in 1975 as a 12 year old nerdy kid, I moved from London to Eastbourne where the Langney Shopping Centre had a Tandy. The manager was a lovely Canadian guy and he was soooo patient with me umming and ahhhing over which IC or resistors to buy. Many happy hours browsing stuff I didn’t understand.

@th82573 жыл бұрын
It's actually much older than that and is nothing to do with the Black Country. It comes from the old French verb Muchier, which became "Muscher" in Norman french, meaning to skulk around. It was brought with the Normans across to England with the conquest and became "mooch". It's been used across the UK ever since, not just the black country.

I worked in a couple of branches of Tandy in the early 90s and I’d say: - no, it was not a good shop, most of the stuff it sold was utter junk; - the staff were out of shape but weirdly their skin and hair were flawless; - some did drink Lilt but it was very much frowned upon by senior management. That said, my stint there did teach me two valuable lessons: - a career in electronics retail was not for me; - the brand name ‘Realistic’ didn’t play well with the good burghers of Gillingham and Gravesend.
