Alan Wiggins was the leadoff table setter on one of the most successful Padres teams, batting ahead of Tony Gwynn, who batted well over .400 with the speed demon on base. Just a few years after the 1984 World Series, he passed away from complications related to HIV and years of drug use.

Thanks! I'm glad education on drugs has improved over the years, but we've still got a ways to go.

I saw Alan Wiggins play his very first professional game with Idaho Falls in 1977; one of his teammates was Daryl Sconiers, who went on to have his own substance abuse problems. I saw Wiggins play again with Hawaii in 1981.

I remember Alan Wiggins. Thanks for the biography .The Orioles have a tough series this weekend in Seattle and then they go to San Diego. Timely for the Alan Wiggins story.

I didn't necessarily plan it that way, but it was neat to think of a player seldom thought of as shared between the two franchises, in the current day "Manny Machado Series".

Thats a sad story I can relate to it ..I went through drug addiction for the better part of thirty years..Its a rough ride..I was addicted to prescription pain meds..Like wiggins It ruined my career as well.Just not in baseball ..My baseball career ended at the semi pro level lol..But ive been clean five years now..for those struggling just remember it is possible and we do recover..

I remember watching Wiggins in his prime and he was a real game changer like Vince Coleman or some such, a real stolen base threat.
@Hatbilly
@Hatbilly 11 ай бұрын
Vince Coleman was so underrated. The game has shifted away from this player type some, but I still believe both Coleman and Wiggins would be successful in today's game, all things considered.

@@Hatbilly I totaly agree Vince Coleman was very underated..He ran the bases like he was the only one on the field..He literaly stole bases at will..There was times the catcher didnt even attempt to throw him out..

thanks again for introducing me to a player i was not aware of! it’s crazy how someone can mentally be so good at something, such as baseball, but then struggle with common sense. like how drugs are terrible for you. it’s wild. poor guy. regardless loved the video and thanks for sharing some knowledge! 😀

Not an expert on the mental health patterns that lead someone into addiction, but it seems like a good bit of addicts used to be brilliant people. Makes it even sadder.

@@Hatbilly yeah, it's just something people who don't go through that could never understand. it seems like it's a way to cope with something deeper. definitely would be a good conversation to have!

I remember thinking in 1984 that Gwynn and Wiggins would be superstars for years. Tragic story.

I think at worst we would be looking at an everyday contributor, borderline all-star. He had the physical talent, of that there can be no question.@@Hatbilly

What a tragic story regarding Alan Wiggins, as a Yankees fan Rod Scurry as a very similar story i know you would do a brilliant job covering Rod Scurry’s passing. Seeing Rod at 3:17 was well done by u
