Rangers qualified for the Champions League with an amazing 7-2 victory over the Russian Champions, Alania Vladikavkaz. Ally McCoist scored in the first minute and completed his hat-trick within the next eighteen minutes. Alania threatened a comeback by making the score 3-2, but after Peter van Vossen added another goal just before half-time, Rangers controlled the game. In the second half, Brian Laudrup scored twice and Charlie Miller completed the scoring in the final minutes.

Was thinking that myself, Gerry McNee on commentary said the home fans sportingly clapped McCoist off, so they probably did. Maybe opposition fans in Scotland will start doing that when we are beating them.....

Even although this is from 1996, it looks like it's from 1976 with the quality of the transmission from Russia and the tinny commentary sound! The golden days of European football! As an Alaniya fan and a 15 year old I was shocked and devastated. They were outclassed and gave up in the end. As someone who seldom had an opportunity to watch european soccer I had little idea how far ahead it was. It is amazing to me now how basic all players look in 2021.

Gerry McNee and "Champagne" Charlie Nicholas,who was a great Celtic player, He eventually got a transfer to Arsenal for the big bucks and Bright lights of London.

Not in Europe. This was around the time we where getting done all the time in qualifiers. A few years later Advocaat would do better in Europe.

@@Slickster-rh3mn as crazy as it sounds Gerrard has the team playing better football and although in the grand scheme of things it is really early days (especially for him as a manager) the team and football we play now is on par, if not better than most played during the peak times of the club, could be a change to the game in general, but I don’t think we’re too far off seeing some legends born at rangers again

@@j.g.m7919 Agreed. The Rangers team that nearly made the Champions League final probably was better. It was a more workmanlike team. But Gerrard has got the team playing football thats nicer on the eye. I would be curious how Gerrard's team would fare against Advocaat's team.

@@Slickster-rh3mn don’t want to get too far ahead of myself, but I think today’s current team and style of play would pip it, I feel the football rangers are playing now is the style that was promised by Advocaat (and the failed le guen), I think the club itself was too stuck in its ways to change, but being forced to adapt from the very foundations of the establishment has breathed new life and a new way of thinking with every aspect of the club, if Gerrard is building a team and not just learning the ropes then I see him at rangers for a while and see him achieve some of the best years to date for the club

@mike19821982 Yeah you had money and still did nothing in Europe as you were getting thrashed every second week ie Juventus, Ajax, Auxerre, Grasshopper, Strasbourg and got decimated by Gothenburg in a preliminary round lol. And also lost to teams like AEK Athens and Steaua Bucharest lol. Beating Alania Vladikavkaz in a qualifying round doesn't change that lol.
