Alanis Morissette: Self-Care is No Longer a Luxury

  Рет қаралды 135,072

Dr. Mayim Bialik

Dr. Mayim Bialik

Күн бұрын

Alanis Morissette (singer, songwriter, musician) breaks down different versions of restoration, the dangers of intolerance and a lack of boundary-setting, and the beauty of anger as a catalyst for positive change. She explains why meditation may not be for everyone, the benefits of guided meditations, and her approach to creating her new meditation album. Alanis opens up about the origins of her disordered eating, her prophetic visions about her career, and the dangers of turning anger inward. Mayim and Jonathan discuss the reasons we project our parents’ relationship onto our own partners, cranial sacral therapy, and what it means to truly rest. Stick around until the end to hear Mayim sing and dissect Alanis's lyrics!

This conversation was so engaging and so REAL. I wish people focused and talked to her more about her second album, Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, as I think there is a lot to unpack and learn from there as well. Alanis is such a gift to the world and such a talented songwriter.

My girl, Alanis Morissette! Her music carried me through so many emotionally charged times, good and bad. Mayim, while you were speaking about lyrics, I got chills. I've been like that my whole life and didn't realize that other people have that reaction to music. One song in particular, a few lines from the song "Uninvited": "You - you're not allowed, you're uninvited, an unfortunate slight." I would loudly sing those words, like I was saying it to the person who took away my innocence. It feels empowering. Thanks, Mayim, Jonathan and Alanis.

The thing I love most about Alanis, aside from her incredible talent, is that she is a fellow HSP. I remember very vividly when I was in therapy in California, and my counselor lent me a copy of Elaine Aron's great book, and I felt like it explained sooooo many things to me about myself that I had spent so many years struggling with.

I'm totally joining Mayim in fan-girling over Alanis Morisette. Jagged Little Pill came out when I was 15 and it truly was the first time I heard a woman singing an angry song in an angry voice and it was amazing 🤩. I love all of Alanis's work and consider her influential to the woman I am today. So happy to see her and Mayim discussing mental health!

As a present for finishing middle school, my parents bought me my first CD player along with Jagged Little Pill. I played that CD so much that it nearly broke. What a powerhouse of a record. Also, this interview seemed too short. I checked the time, and there are 20 minutes of just Mayim and Jonathan talking at the end! I wish there had been more Alanis.

A lot of the time, when a celebrity is promoting something (in this case, the meditation album), they have interviews stacked one after another and are scheduled for 15 minute increments, one after another for an entire day, so they can reach as many demographics/people as possible within their limited amount of free time. I assumed that Alanis was probably doing that and that is why the interview seemed to end abruptly.

It’s funny how differently we all bond with a song and it’s lyrics. The year before “You Learn” came out we had a house fire. The part where she says “Wear it out the way a 3 year old would do” followed by “melt it down your gonna have to eventually anyway” The fire trucks are coming up around the bend” it was crazy cause my brother was three years old and started the fire while we were asleep Thankfully we all survived but lost everything else. It was the catalyst of so much change and growth for my family. What was such a deep tragedy turned into something we truly “Learned” from. This song has such significant meaning to me. ❤🔥🚒

So thankful for these other two exceptional souls behind this podcast for bringing and ”de-construct” Alanis so, so well. And Mayim..how I adore you singing!!! Quoting same Alanis lyrics: “It’s all I really want, some patience A way to to calm me down And I I want is deliverance A place to find a common ground” That’s what this podcast is to me..between lot other things.💜

I chilled as you sang those lines from that song, Mayim. I am 76 and had never heard of the song, Suit of Lights. I did learn years ago that the composers of "funeral songs" use chords that will make you cry, to assist with the grieving process. So maybe that is what happened here. The human body is amazing with the way it can respond to certain vibrations. In the book "Fork in the Road", (about tuning forks), some of this is explained. 🥰

For me, podcasts are powerful because I get to learn so much more about celebrities, mental health experts and artists. I realize they decide how to answer questions, but your ability, Mayim, to draw out answers from which we can learn is amazing. I believe your honesty about your personal struggles and the other ways in which you lead into questions allows the guests to feel comfortable. These conversations have the feel of "we're all just sitting around and having a small group discussion" even though you have over a million subscribers. Many are careful I'm sure not to say the wrong thing, but it's always fun. I wish you and Jonathan could've talked to Alanis longer.

I really enjoyed the convo at the end about deep rest. I didn’t realize this was a thing lots of people experience, I always called it “resetting my nervous system” - would often happen if I went to nap for 20 mins, wouldn’t fall asleep deeply but I would wake up feeling totally restored. I thought it was just being an HSP thing!

I love the way she articulates things. Like "we're meant to be projected upon", "invisible loads of moms", "operating from such a flooded space", "can't be left alone because the voices inside get mean", that meditation may not be for everyone, etc. I was like AHA, HMMM, all rings true but I just wouldn't have articulated it that way or even looked at it that way. Like how she was totally understanding with being projected upon, wow, and how she was like, yeah let's shame the ones who can't/do meditate (all in fun) but I love how she's like, ok cool, with everything & just embraces it. I've been really trying to acknowledge my own trauma issues and work on my self healing and it has made me more triggered, resistant, able to identify others trauma behavior & projections which sometimes frustrates me, but her attitude is so chill & cool, like letting it all roll off her back and letting all things just be. I wanna be like that.

Exactly what Mayim said. From 1993 and after, I felt that Alanis was saying what I wanted to hear and said, every álbum was kinda companion for me in my girl-becoming-a woman years

When listening to those parts of the song "You learn" I feel exactly the same things. For me, is a feeling like my soul is in jail, struggling to find something that got lost across the Universe and in this part is like it explodes and I finally free. It happens in many of her songs, specially during the "bridge" parts. Alanis is someone really special to me, I wish she could know how important and inspiring she is to me and to so many people who is trying to find some relief. Great to see too amazing women like you and her talking about life. Thanks for that!

She looks beautiful and just glows and exudes happiness and positivity. Her smile is contagious and makes me smile. Love her music and singing style. What a smart and talented person. It was refreshing to see two women artists and intellectuals from different genres having a deep conversation which was at times over my head but still riveting. Enjoyed that.

She was on the scene before 1995. Those of us in Ottawa will remember a fun program from CJOH TV - Bushnell communications. That program called - You Can’t Do that onTV that she was in.

This podcast always finds me when I need to hear the messages in it. Thank you for this podcast and for candidly sharing your own stories with us. I remember Alanis in the mid 90s when it was hard to find mainstream women in music speaking to young feminists. A great podcast with both of you. I needed this week’s topic more than you could ever know.

10:43 not everything is "projected"! what is with being touched (by your music, songs, you as person)? what is with understanding somone (you, alanis)? what is with it is helping, listening? what if god is inside us ourselves and not outside in a meditation? yesterday and today i am so thankful to alanis morissette, the person, the self, the being, what she all has shared, given, lived, done, is! i appreciate you so much, without an end!
