Nah. Alanis Morissette was just riding the mainstream wave of post grunge, women's, alternative rock that was popular at the time. "Hole", "veruca salt", pretty much started that whole 90s trend

This album blew my mind back in the day. A woman, singing like THAT? Cursing, the subject matter, the rawness; there'd never been anything on mainstream radio like that before. It was eye-opening and life changing. I started listening to a wider variety of music, searching out things that didn’t get radio play, and the stuff on the radio grew in variety. Great moment in music history.

Also, Madonna signed her and allowed her to make this album. I don't believe men would have allowed her to make this. I'm sure even in the process men tried to get her to "tone it down". Imagine being able to feel like this. Anyone with this depth of visceral emotion can heal the world! Like Salt 'N Pepa said "to the lucky man whos up next, either treat or just step!"

I give her such amazing credit for revealing her raw emotions and feelings; she bared her complete and utter soul and she left nothing on the table. Jagged Little Pill was is a masterpiece of anger, emotion, and female oppression. She broke down the mainstream door for women to be able to be angry and be honest and be on the charts just like the men. Its raw and real, we deserve to scream too. There wouldn't be bands like Kittie and Butcher Babies screaming and metal af without Alanis.

There were other women that did it years and even decades before... still one of my favorite albums ever, but please, history in music is really important when it comes to statements like that. Even in this album, to me she has a "much" better, and overall more relevant, song: "All I Really Want". That intro song alone, condenses and dissects everything you're about to ear during the entire album, and it is a brilliant song... not to mention one of the best " 3-failed-best-pushed-over-the-top" moments in recorded musical history... 3 or 4 "failed notes" (yet genius, considering the entire flow of the song), can be everyone's else joy to the ears.

I saw Alanis in concert at the Mahaffey Theater in St. Petersburg a few years ago. She still sounds absolutely AMAZING!!!! It was an acoustic concert and she spoke with the audience in between songs. She sounded very happy with the place she was at in her life. Jagged Little Pill - the song and the album - were about the demise of the relationship she had just been in with an older, famous man (aka Dave Coulier aka Uncle Joey on Full House - she was around 18 and he was around 33 when they started dating). Alanis is now 45, happily married, and pregnant with her 3rd child - www.self.com/story/alanis-morissette/amp

It was cool back in the day, when you listened to rappers and just music in general, the idea was to paint a picture. Pretty sure the song is about Uncle Joey from Full House. They dated and he has stated the lyrics are very close to home. They broke up cause she decided she was too young for a family and he wanted a family. She's never confirmed the name though.

Ok, so a little of the background that I have compiled through the years: As stated before, this was an ode to her ex boyfriend. Allegedly, this ex was Dave Coulier (Uncle Joey from Full House). Their breakup in the early 90s was apparently not great and he seems to have left her for an older woman. He is 15 years older than her and she was a teenager when they started their relationship and so it was her first major heartbreak... Hence the song... But I digress; when she wrote the major songs on this album and brought them to her label, the album somehow ended up in front of Madonna, head and founder of Maverick Records. From what I understand, Madonna thought You Oughta Know had major potential but the music was very underwhelming so she decided to reproduce it. She reached out to a couple up and coming musicians (who were, by the way, on the DL visionaries) but hadn't made it truly huge yet. So, instead of the plodding bassline that was originally written, Flea brought a spontaneity and an creativity that makes the song seem more stream of consciousness. And instead of the pedantic and boring guitar licks, Dave Navarro brought a wall of sound, stadium rock thickness to the sound and rounded out Morissette's sound. So, with 2 of the Red Hot Chili Peppers backing her up, her video hit MTV and took the world by storm.

The thing is, whether or not it's a woman singing it for other women, it applies to every gender. Oh that verse that's filled with petty passive aggression: Everyone is that person. There are so many blokes who have been there and done that, that it doesn't bear thinking about. As men we're supposed to be all fucking mechanical logic machines: bollocks. Whether it shows or not, some of the thoughts that have gone through this woman's head, have gone through every bloke's head too.

IndustrialBonecraft well said (if I’m understanding you correctly). I hate the preconception that men ain’t supposed to feel emotion. Men can be hurt, angry, cry. It doesn’t make them any less of a man. In fact, it makes them more of a man if they can stop being a wuss bag and actually own their emotions.

I am a guy and I could relate to her emotions in this song and that's why it spoke to me when it came out. Everybody can relate to feeling anger about a previous relationship where the other person unloaded their issues on you and then just bailed. I think it happens to men and women alike.
