Alaskan tunnel hike to the mountains

Hobo Shoestring

Күн бұрын

I took a five hour hike to the Anderson Memorial Tunnel at Whittier, Alaska, plus a couple short time lapse videos inserted into this video but didn't know they were so short.
I heard what I thought may have been a wolf but wasn't sure.

Shoestring, you can’t fool me. You’re sitting at home in your living room surrounded by a bunch of Bob Ross paintings! I see a bunch of happy mountains and a couple happy little trees. Only thing missing is a happy little cabin. LOL...! Keep on keeping on, Mark! Cheers! Whipple

Lost foot 2006 accident at a fire scene. Have a bionic prosthetic but the computer that changes the footfall isn’t fast enough for irregular ground. Toured 49 states by Rv travel, but irregular ground still presents a problem that could lead to breaking a bone in the stump. I still get around, but at 75 years old, I’m willing to see less of the ultra wild while being able to travel. Put 30,000 on a Jeep before purchasing a 26’ Rv to continue seeing the country. It currently has 87,000 miles on it. Have been to 59 National Parks and countless State Parks. I’ve also dealt with having type one diabetes for 61 years. I’ll leave the side treks to the likes of Shoestring and stay mobile enough to enjoy the rest of the country. I don’t need to climb El Capitan to marvel at its majesty from the ground level. After dipping my cane into all the Great Lakes, both Oceans, the Gulf, drive 90% of Route 66, the entirety of the Alaskan Highway, most of Canada’s Provinces, and a dip into Mexico, I’ve only a few Bucket List destinations remaining before I attempt to repeat most of the trip a second time. My plan is to slide sideways into my grave saying “Boy what a Trip.”

Kewl, ‘String! You enjoy a freedom only wild animals experience. Talking about cold: In 1985, it was -28° F at Flotation, NC (Spruce Pine), on the Clinchfield Railroad. On train number 94, the dispatcher told my crew via radio that “you have to work Flotation”, an industry track. My poor old brakeman, who had endured many years on the railroad as a yard switchman since WW2, said it was the coldest time he had ever experienced. After we worked the industry, we couldn’t even get enough air on the rear of the train to make a brake test. So, we set off 65 cars in the siding at Toe River and left them there, and with 30 remaining cars on our train, the engines could barely pump enough air to get the required minimum of 75 lbs to make a brake test. Unforgettable cold weather that may never again be experienced in our lifetimes.

I got a reply from Willie Nelson today... asked me to email him. Whoo hoo! I hung out around him and his drummer's kids in the 70's a lot. I might have told you about Willie doing a video of his song "I Woke Up Not Dead Again Today". He did it just before the pandemic. I'd better take him up on the offer...Anyway, I see why Alaska is special. In many ways. I hope the government takes good care of it. I don't like to see Alaska messed up.

Although *The Shining* depicted 'Outlook Hotel' in Colorado, a ficticious location, most of the interior shots were filmed at Elstree - EMI (UK), some of the Overlook exterior shots, were shot on studio sets, a few exterior shots were shot on location by a second-unit crew headed by Jan Harlan. Saint Mary Lake and Wild Goose Island in Glacier National Park, Montana was the filming location for the aerial shots of the opening scenes, with the Volkswagen Beetle driving along Going-to-the-Sun Road. The Timberline Lodge on Mount Hood in Oregon was filmed for a few of the establishing shots of the fictional Overlook Hotel; absent in these shots is the hedge maze, something the Timberline Lodge does not have.
