I feel like I need to clarify something here since this blew up without me noticing: I originally meant this account/video to exist for archival purposes. I'm in no way affiliated with Albert, Ray, or Lily. I do sincerely want you all to check them out though, as they're all incredible individuals. Ray's KZfaq channel: kzfaq.info/love/-oPgEuX6iwJucvVGEmQL7Q Albert's KZfaq channel: kzfaq.info Lily's KZfaq channel: kzfaq.info Albert and Lily released a cover yesterday which you definitely should check out as well: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bLR9qJB6lp6YqZ8.html

it's a common thing with classically trained musicians. It's not that they can't, but they're formal education doesn't encourage it. In many cases, it is discouraged and frowned on. In contrast, Jazz musicians are encouraged to explore self expression and do wild stuff. there are classical musicians that can improvise, but the majority will say "I don't" when asked to improvise.

It's so nice to see a musician of Ray's level just playing like a kid, not taking himself too seriously and being so friendly with everybody. I think he'll make a very positive impact in keeping interest on classical music, attracting a younger public to the style. Fantastic, Ray! By the way, I've seen you playing in Brussels, at the Queen Elisabeth Competition. It's time again for the QEC.

@@LePetitBat it's simply that improvising in a classical style requires much more technicality than improvising in some other styles, so when a classical musician is asked to 'improvise', they will think in terms of their classical background. since classical musicians nowadays are mostly just performers, they are not necessarily trained to compose in that style. even so, there was a time when improvising in that style was regular, like in the Baroque and Classical periods. Bach's "Fantasias" are based on improvisations, if not direct copies of them with slight alterations. e.g. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qs10eJac0dHRpIU.html there are still modern classical musicians who have maintained the art of classical composition, though, e.g. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/q7thYM2Fsb2nlWg.html

Really enjoyable session. it does sound incredible that a touring classical violinist with years of training says he cannot improvise. I haven't dealt a lot with that level of musicians, but I've had someone who's taken lessons, sight reads music and plays piano really well tell me, "I can't improvise or play by ear, because to me, when I read the music I think of it as a key I press, not a musical note". My jaw sort of dropped because at that time I only played by ear and could just figure out chords and melodies of songs. I couldn't understand how a guy could play Beethoven and Chopin and not figure out stuff by ear. On the other hand, I think Ray can but perhaps because of exclusively classical training 1) he has almost never been asked to improvise and never practiced it and 2) being used to playing the most excellent music ever composed perfectly he thinks whatever he improvises is comparatively so crappy that he says he can't. Anyway, it's an interesting phenomenon.

Actually improvisation is a classical music lost art sadly, most baroque to late classical composers and performers knew how to improvise and some were really good at it. Of course in a different lenguage than what modern jazz and popular music improvisation works but they did nonetheless, the principles are the same, use the music vocabulary you already have to instinctively build a new composition that works, like a conversation. In the romantic period music became more composition focused than ever, but soloists were often asked to improvise, Cadenzas in concertos for instance are meant to be improvised with the material already displayed during the first movement, but even that eventually changed and as is nowdays, great players wrote down cadenza parts and those became famous and the standards, like Jascha Heifetz, Tchaikovsky's concerto cadenza, and no one improvises anymore RIP but as we can see im the video, you can't be deeply familiar with a musical vocabulary and be completely unable to improvise.

also i find it absolutely stunning that theyre learning from eachother. ray has his own entire style while the other two have their own as well, and they both get to show off their strengths and weaknesses with music. ray isnt comfortable with improvising, and the others arent as comfortable with the heavy/fast classical. i love everything about this
