Hayato Sumino , he has not been trained in any conservatoire. His mother is a piano teacher and he studied at Tokyo university and got his master degree in engineering. It is just like a British contestant who use to be a student in University of Oxford , not in Royal Academy of Music, or an American contestant who finished his degree in California institute of Technology or MIT, not in The Julliard School. He is a amazing many talented man. I have never seen such a man who can preform and study well.

Really amazingly talented. His natural sound is there because he did not enter any conservatory. Its more free and totally his own. It is clear by the way he performs that these pieces are his own choice and he truly loves these.

@@gracenoora1854 Totally agree. And quite possibly the jury of the Chopin Competition is looking for a performance 'a la conservatoire' so Cateen's 'au naturel' performance (but clothed!😉) did not fit.
@gracenoora1854
@gracenoora1854 2 жыл бұрын
@@cooldebt sometimes I think the jurors may have been more than a little conflicted because they obviously see the genius of Hayato, and how charismatic his natural sound is, (he got up to Stage 3) but of course they are too bound by their established set of standards. It would have been fantastic if the jurors showed more willingness to step out of their box and welcome the diversity.

I'm a huge fan of Hayato Sumino and though he didn't make it to the finals, it is thoroughly impressive that he can perform at such an elite level with no formal training. I think this speaks volumes of his talent. If you follow his social media channels he is so skilled at music it honestly blows my mind. He can transform classical standards into both modern and jazz styles (which are mesmerizing) and ALSO write his own music. I honestly don't know a more multi-talented, cross-genre musician of this generation. If someone does, please let me know...

That almost reminded me of Stanislav Bunin (I think it was) from the early 1980s. He got so nervous that he was shaking and left in the middle of his performance after “slipping” a few times. I am glad Hayato was able to overcome his nerves and he got into his performance mode! What a talented young man!

As a classical pianist myself, I could hear the mistakes he was making, but most people can't. Was his performance perfect? Definitely not, but I felt like his interpretation and musicality are so much better than others that get trained to interpret these songs in such a perfect way leaving no room for an organic flow to the song. I felt like Hayato captured the essence of Chopin even if his playing wasn't perfect. Brilliant stuff.

@@alegriart From my understanding, sometimes he would make changes on the fly. Even his contemporaries played his song with different dynamics (to his annoyance). I think his etudes are meant to be played very precisely since they are basically pieces meant to improve your technique, while his preludes and sonatas are much more flexible. In the end though, one of the most aspects of all of his songs is making sure the melody undertone is sustained and can be heard perfectly, which Hayato does extremely well.

@@katkat3458 oh, it's one of my most favorite anime. In the anime, he completely makes his own rendition of the songs, which is controversial. Hayato isn't making his own rendition as he is using different (and better imo) stresses on different notes and slightly different tempo changes and volume changes. In the anime, the MC almost makes it sound like a different song altogether, and it's beautiful. So I guess it really depends on how much artistic license you enjoy and why you are listening. For me, the Chopin competition is all about trying to bring out the feelings that Chopin himself was trying to convey, which is why I think Hayato is excellent and why I dislike the robotic performances.

Both his technique and musical sensitivities are out of this world. To have a good time check out his Hungarian Rhapsody no.2 where he improvises a 5 minute cadenza near the end of it. Crazy idea and maybe not " academically correct" but how amazing and exciting!
@Aclusios
@Aclusios 2 жыл бұрын
What do you mean "academically correct" ? In all the pieces that Liszt wrote, the cadenzas he left there were supposed to only be an example, the performer was expected to improvise one while playing the piece. I hope I don't sound rude but it is really sad to see that deep in our current generation ideology any performance that is not exactly fitting some standards but is instead creative and innovative is kind of repressed...

Exactly!!!!!!! Hayato may not have a laurel on his hair, but he has wings of music that allow him to travel freely around the world. After the performance in Poland, he will also be performing Chopin's Piano Concerto No. 2 in the United States on the anniversary of Chopin's death. He is amazing!!

@@christopherczajasager9030Maybe that's what I wanted to say I'm not good at English and may not be able to choose the right words The word "脆弱"("Vulnerable” translated in Japanese)" has a bad impression in Japanese, so I wrote it as "fragile".

The trembling fingers is indicative of genuine passion. He's thinking about others enjoying what they hear rather than what he hears, and must play it as well as possible for them. This level of humility is the definition of true artistry.

@Michael Zhu. I think it is a combination of many things and none of it is raw. It is clear he is a child prodigy who is no longer a child. He was able to play most of these compositions at a young age, but not with the refinement that he now has. That requires hard work. It is unusual that he graduated from a university not focusing on music. It is very possible to be an excellent pianist if you have the inate talent and study privately with great teachers who are not necessarily employed by a Music University. it is clear that his ear is as finely developed as his technique. He has a mysterious kind of charisma that cannot be totally explained. Very special musician. I hope he takes good care of himself.

Congratulations on 5 million views! Hayato sharpened his spirit to the highest degree and confronted Chopin head-on, fair and square, in the best possible way. The most superb and exquisite performance was produced. At that time, I felt Chopin and Poland more deeply and profoundly than in anyone else's performance, and my heart trembled tremendously. His truly beautiful, profound, sometimes delicate, and sometimes magnificent tone was like a connection to the beautiful and profound universe. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Hayato. And thank you from the bottom of my heart for the opportunity me to watch and listen to Hayato's performance over and over again, which continues to fascinate people around the world so very much.

I am really impressed with the nocturne in C minor. I heard a blind pianist play this work perfectly years ago and since then I felt it was not possible to play it better. It is like this pianist has a control of the melody and counter melodies at once while requiring absolute evenness of rhythm with no hidden compensations due its extreme difficulty.

Sumino's story continues after the Chopin Competition and there is an article by the senior producer of NHK general bureau for America in "NHK World Japan" 6 Feb, 2024 that is well worth a read! He made his USA debut in Boston Symphony Hall with Boston Pops in 2023 and is currently playing around the world with various famous orchestras. He will debut at Salle Gaveau in Paris on 7 Nov, 2024.
