The fact is that the part of the province that is strip mined is tiny. Since 1967, 761 square km of borreal forrest have been disturbed by oil sands mining. This is an area smaller than New York, Berlin, or London. 0.2 % of Canada's boreal forest can be mined for oil. This land will be reclaimed once the reserves are depleted. Of the 169 billion barrels of oil sands reserves, only 34 million can be accessed through mining. The rest of these reserves will be drilled.
