Glad to see you reacting to this one (though I would have liked Darklands a little bit more), The Beatles were the band that got me into music so it was nice to see it. Paul's discography is pretty spotty but he is probably my favourite Beatle and the most talented one. This album is one of his best by far but I think Ram is even better. It's slightly quirky and very art pop (some tracks almost sound like a blueprint for late 90s/early 00s indie) so I think you'll enjoy this one as well.

You indicated you prefer the acoustic folk Paul. I think you'd really like his debut (1970). Ram is his masterpiece IMO. Band On The Run is a fine album as well. I liked watching you play Blackbird

The guitar riff at 5:38 of this video has always reminded me of the riff during the chaotic interlude in Down By The Seaside by Led Zeppelin. As for Band On The Run sounding like three songs in one, Vancouver by Jeff Buckley also has a similar three in one formula. You’ll hear that when you react to Sketches.

At the beginning, when you said that you didn't like Abbey Road b/c of its heavy blues element, I was like, oh, he's not going to like Let Me Roll It. I love Let Me Roll It; it has such a nice slow groove.

Wasn’t expecting the name drop at the end there but I’m glad you enjoyed the album as a whole. I’ve known the title track for god knows how long and only actually got around to the album a couple years back. I do believe that in the previous poll someone suggested Ram but I’m not entirely sure who either as I’ve not heard it yet.

Dig the review & agree a little bit with Helen Wheels not totally jiving with the rest of the (US) album. Definitely got used to hearing it and always look forward to it. Wish he would’ve done it live. I’ve played it in band once or twice and it was a fun live track. But it was originally a separate single anyway. I get it. That said about Ram for me it is the other masterpiece and it’s just in a different way. Polished, slick, abbey road vibe with a band(future wings vibe) Hope you review that. 👍🎸

McCartney/Wings have some great material, but you should think more in terms of individual songs rather than albums. You can find incredible songs in pretty weak albums. Paul has/used to have a strong melodic sense and some of the bass lines he created in the 70s are fantastic. I don't think Ram is such a big deal, though. It would be much better if you reacted to a Wings greatest hits. As for this album, I like "Jet" and the title track.

@@ewest14 Ermm, I'd say RAM is the most conceptual, a lowfi folksy homemade album, but the individual songs are not that strong. Also it's not very representative of McCartney's work in the 70s.That was with the Wings and they're a band of hit singles not so much albums.

I was always hesitant to listen to this one because I foolishly thought it was too simple and poppy, leaving behind his best material with the Beatles. Finally listened to it and I was surprised just how great it was. I know this is not a thorough analysis or review of it but that's just genuinely how I felt when I listened: "Man, this is great". Nothing more complicated than that. Also, crazy take on Lennon being the one to be make "simple" songs during the Beatles. I always thought that belonged to Paul. He always judged for it by Lennon (his "granny" music as John called it). Lennon would also criticize George's song's for being old or simple sometime (I Me Mine). Paul was inspired to write Paperback writer because one of his close family (aunt or grandmother) asked him if he was only ever going to write just songs about love. Great video though, as always!
@DEVILdRuMMinG

I think that often Paul did write "granny" music, however, I wouldn't conflate that with being simple. I guess by "granny music" John meant Pauls songs in the Music Hall, Jazz, Tin Pan Alley, or Musical styles. These styles, when you look at them though, aren't simple but are actually usually harmonically much more complex and sophisticated than the majority of simpler Pop or Rock music.

As a musician I can confirm that most McCartney music is NOT simple at all. And the songs that are “simple” are elegantly so.

John said Paul took his songs like Strawberry Fields Forever and made them experimental which he didn’t like. Yes John had good lyrics but it was mostly Paul, George Martin, and their engineers who made John’s songs experimental. That’s why John doesn’t have many sonically experimental songs in his solo career. They’re all mostly just back to basics rock and roll and pop songs which isn’t a bad thing. Just tired of the myth that Paul was simple and John was experimental

Lennon is 'simple' - totally wrong, wrong, wrong... Lennon added the dark, unwashed and brutal vibe to Paul's drycleaned, sweetness and upbeat line - take, as an example, very telling - on Sgt. Pepper, "Getting Better" Paul is singing, "You've got to admit, it's getting better, a little better all the time..." - but in the background, john interjects, "..it can't get no worse...."

Except Paul was also dark as he wrote the two darkest and saddest songs in the catalogue with For No One and Eleanor Rigby. It’s also just a fact that John’s solo music is simpler than Paul’s. John didn’t experiment much at all with sounds in his solo career while Paul’s constantly did

Lennon may not have been as good of a player as Paul or George but he was the most experimental BY FAR! not simple at all! lennon alone changed music forever. Definitely influenced anyone you like greatly.
@ewest14
@ewest14 Жыл бұрын
It’s funny you say that because John was actually the least experimental in his solo career. I think you’ve got the wrong idea about who was the most experimental as it has been a myth for years. In the Beatles, many of John’s experimental songs were spearheaded by Paul and/or George Martin. For example, Paul was the one who found out how to make tape loops for Tomorrow Never Knows. He removed the eraser head of his tape machine which allowed him to make loops and then brought in those ideas for the song. Paul played a lot of the experimental instruments on John’s songs and was responsible for most of the experimental arrangements. John even blamed Paul for this later on and said he didn’t appreciate Paul’s experimentation on his songs and how Paul would take over the arrangements. The difference between them is perfectly shown in their solo careers. I like John’s solo career but he didn’t really experiment much at all. He mostly stuck to blues, rock, and pop. Paul on the other hand has been experimenting with genres and sounds his whole career. McCartney (1970) has been cited as an influence on indie, lofi, and DIY artists. Ram is arguable the first indie pop album and has been very influential to indie musicians. McCartney II has been hugely influential to indie, DIY, lofi, electronica, and bedroom pop artists. John is an amazing songwriter, but Paul was responsibly for many of the experimental ideas in the Beatles and he continued to show his experimentation in his solo career
