Which alcohol burns better, faster, brighter? I'm comparing methanol, ethanol (grain alcohol) and isopropanol (rubbing alcohol) to see which has a faster rate of combustion, which burns brighter and which is the best choice for an alcohol stove. A good look at the difference between ethanol and methanol and isopropyl alcohol and a good time with methanol fire, ethanol fire and isopropanol fire! Loads of good information and a great comparison of methanol vs ethanol vs isopropyl alcohol! Thanks for watching!

This video actually saved my family. Thank you very much! We bought ethyl alcohol from an online supplier and the container was properly labeled and it was cheap so I tested it and the flame was as blue as the ocean. No laughing matter as I know someone who went permanently blind from methanol poisoning after continuous use of 'rubbing alcohol' that he thought was safe.

Wow! Usually if any methanol has been added to ethanol, it is labeled as “denatured alcohol” indicating the presence of methanol or other stabilizers. This kind of fuel should not be used for any consumption or for cooking over. Pure ethanol is a better option! So glad this video helped!! Thanks for watching!

Yo like I do my own distilling and the higher the proof of ethonal the more blue the flame is. And methanol makes a yellowish flame. Much more carbon and nasty components that are poisonous
@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN
@pa_maj.MARTINI-van-MAN Жыл бұрын
@@jamesthomas8481 The proof matters. If you add water to ethanol lowering the proof, the flame goes more blue believe it or not. Is your alcohol lower than 190 proof? I have food grade/un-denatured alcohol for tincture making, it's 190% proof (95% alcohol by volume) it burns with blue and yellow flames like in the video, lots of yellow when the lights are out. I dilute it for tinctures of-course...it's grain alcohol.

Because I now know the brightness means more soot particles glowing while they're being released, that means isopropanol would leave the most soot at bottom of your kettle, and methanol would leave the least. Maybe that's why the "alcohol for burning" (as labeled) that I have here at home is methanol. Though I use it exclusively to clean sticky things.

the fire aspect of alcohols is interesting. another aspect to learn more about is how they compare in being distilled. especially given there is usually some water in the mix. for many chemistry experiments alcohol is used to dissolve some material. like a certain plant. now legal to grow in more states than ever before. and later , after some reflux, and filtering the alcohol, the filtrate can be distilled to recover the solvent and re-cycle it. plan on paying 20-25 dollars a liter for ethanol or methanol. costly . so its sensible to learn how to recover the stuff for re-use. have you covered this topic already ? let us know so we all won't have to search

@The Science Pirate Hi, new to the channel. Just subscribed. Question. I know some people burn Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel in their kerosene heaters but in order to make it work they have to add some sort of additive and they also add Isopropyl Alcohol. Supposedly it keeps the wick from getting clogged up, makes it burn hotter, and keeps the smell down. I don't know how true any of that is but there's a bunch of videos on YT of ppl burning ULSD in their kerosene heaters because it is much cheaper to buy than 1K kerosene. Anyways, I have a kerosene heater but I don't burn diesel in it, I just use straight 1K kerosene. However, I was wondering, is it ok to add alcohol to kerosene? Would there be a similar benefit of keeping your wick cleaner and/or make it smell less, or burn hotter etc? If so, which alcohol would be best suited for this purpose and how much alcohol would you add to a gallon of kerosene? It's ok if you have no idea what I'm talking about lol. Thanks!
@TheSciencePirate
@TheSciencePirate 2 жыл бұрын
I wish I could provide better insight for you, but I have very little experience with kerosene heaters. My father-in-law burns diesel in his, but he doesn’t add anything to the diesel. I think his heater is rated for either type of fuel. Maybe someone else can provide some better knowledge?!

@@TheSciencePirate No worries, I found a great site (although I don't have it bookmarked on this laptop) that goes into great depth explaining all things kerosene heater related. In the end, I wound up finding a place that sells kerosene for about the same price as the low sulfur diesel. Unrelated, are you an actual chemist? I mean like academically speaking, do you have a chemistry degree? I tried asking a question to the guy that runs the "Chemical Force" KZfaq channel but didn't get a reply. Had a question about "SIO2 ceramic" coatings for automobiles which is like the newest craze for "waxing" your car. If you're not familiar it is basically a clear liquid that you apply in a similar way as traditional paste type wax but it lasts in some cases years as opposed to the old carnuba type wax that only lasts for maybe a few months at most.

Great question Ingace recently purchased 20 litres and intend on doing just that. It's dangerous if inhaled a vapour or ingested or absorbed through skin as it acidifies the blood. However if burning properly apparently leaves C02 and Water vapour with a few other mi or by products. As long as it's burned and not left to evaporate I'd say my research shows it safe...

Made a tin can infrared heater courtesy of Robert Murray-Smiths channel and currently all I can get for alcohol fuels is 91% rubbing alcohol. I have a gallon of methanol on order and I'm hoping it burns slower. At half of a normal tim can full of rubbing alcohol i am getting 40 mins burn time, in his video he claims less than 1/4 filled can of methanol will burn for 1 1/2 hours so here I am trying to see if methanol does burn that much slower and if soo that would help me from redilling my heater every 45 mins or so.

In your experience, what would be the most balanced alcohol between heating power, cleanliness and efficiency to use in mountain stoves that use liquid fuel? I have read that the colder the color of the flame, the more heat it offers. Thank you so much.
@Kabsbub
@Kabsbub 6 ай бұрын
Yes, the more blue the flame the cleaner the burn. I have found that at room temperature, 80% ethanol is the best. Ethanol evaporates with the water, and the water limits how fast it evaporates. If you use 95% ethanol, the ethanol will evaporate too fast and you will end up with a rich air/fuel mixture (and give you a yellow flame) and if it is too lean (50% ethanol) you would have a clean flame (blue) but it'd be difficult igniting it and a lot of the ethanol would stay trapped in the liquid. Therefore the best composition is highly dependent on temperature - if you go to a higher elevation I would consider 95% ethanol. Do not use 100% ethanol, these are potentially more dangerous (and expensive).

Two questions from the nosebleed seats here. 1) Pretty simple: if I wanted to use a lantern mantle on an alcohol reservoir (stove) to make an area light, which should I use? The mantle should increase combustion toward complete by providing a superheated surface, but is that the whole story? Heat of combustion 5.8, 6.4, 8.0 kcal/kg. Flash points 12, 12.5, 11.7 C, autoignition 464, 363, 399 C. The raw data says IPA for max light. Safety factor of Ethanol starts to play. But the nearly complete combustion in open air makes methanol very attractive since the mantle irradiates visible light as long as it gets hot enough. But with a pressurized carburator IPA jumps back to the lead. SO, you have the parameters of the experiment---- GO! 2) Turbocharged internal combustion engine using alcohol injection as post intercooler charge air cooler: which alcohol and what ABV to use for best performance in gasoline carburetor (blow through), gasoline MPI, gasoline DI, diesel. Hopefully I just started a flame war (pun intended), and I can sit here an watch.

Something people need to be aware of - flame color alone cannot differentiate between the alcohols, there are more factors that need to be taken into account. Just because it was blue does not immediately indicate it is methanol. For example, 50% ethanol burns with a blue flame at room temperature. Heat the liquid and it will burn with an orange flame. The airflow of the container will also change how visible/invisible the flame is depending on the air/fuel ratio. I don't disagree with anything in the video and you offer a great comparison but I feel like people are extrapolating the wrong conclusions from the video.

Great presentation! I recently purchased online what they claimed to be Ethanol 70% (meant for hand sanitizing hands) but it hardly has any odor. Could it be fake? I'm just afraid it's methanol instead, which very toxic for the body.

There doesn't seem to be much difference between ethanol and methanol as a fuel: both clean burning but in the UK Methanol is much cheaper. Right now burning Methanol in my decorative small home burner of the kind protected by tough glass. Gives out a remarkable amount of heat by convection presumably. It takes 200ml which burns both fuels for about 55 minutes at a useful level. All the talk about toxic methanol is related to industrial exposure. Just wash your hands if you spill any. On the other hand ethanol is safest on skin as it is used in common hand cleansers. I'll use Methanol as it is cheaper.

There's no fire department in Hell. Nor are there any fire extinguishers down there. Ice cubes & air conditioners're forbidden & it never snows. There's no frost in December. The number 1 hit songs are "It'll Be A Hot Time In The Old Town, Tonight & Come On, Baby, Light My Fire". People are "all fired up".
