out of curiosity, are there specific alcohols that your skin is sensitive to? i feel like denatured alcohol would be a lot worse for sensitive skin than benzyl alcohol and cetearyl alcohol which i understand to be moisturizing to the skin

I agree alcohol does make sunscreen much better to use. However, I’m one of the unlikely ones that experience the redness and rashes. I tend to use the Korean or European sunscreens. They have that elegant texture without the alcohol. La Roche Posay is in love with alcohol in their sunscreens though

I think that it is also important to address what kind of alcohols we are talking about. They are not all the same or have the same effects on the skin. While types such as isopropyl, denatured, or ethyl alcohols are drying to the skin, cetyl and cetearyl, for example, are fatty alcohols that help to moisturize skin and emulsify fats and water based liquids into lotions.
@jeffthompson549 Жыл бұрын
she is referring to the denatured types, Dont belive tge fear mongering, you need to look at the whole formula and not one single ingredient

Unless you are allergic to it. Luckly my Derm. did a patch test on me. 70 patches of different products put on my back for days, UGH but it was the best thing I have ever done for my skin. Even the so called gentle ones !!!. I'm surprised you don't talk about patch testing more.

There are good and bad alcohols, denatured alcohol is bad and overtime will damage your skin barrier.

no, unless you have a skincare product that is 100% alcohol. not likely. alcohol is mixed with other ingredients to make a whole formula, not just a single ingredient

I have an extremely irrelevant question: Can propylene glycol cause infertility? I am someone whose gynecologist always says that there is a good chance I might become infertile. I first heard this when I was 13. It broke my teenager heart. As a adult now, I am concerned about this as I always want kids in the future but I do love makeup and a good skincare is my staple. And some of my skin care and makeup contain propylene glycol. What do I do?

Ok hold up i have extremely oily skin and I've noticed the problem worsen as i continued to spray my face with sunscreen mists that contain alcohol, over time now my pores have become gigantic and the amount of oil my face produces is so ridiculous that i could bottle and sell it ... so beware 🤷♀️ just because she is very knowledgeable doesn't mean it will work for your skin ( i purchased a moisturizer she recommended, the procure rosacare and that was one of the worst things I've ever put on my skin it clogged my pores sooo bad it took weeks to clear my skin ... so beware and always patch test first !!!

Is it normal that cetyl and cetearyl alcohol cause me contact dermatitis?
@s_shaleh2 жыл бұрын
I'm curious to know what makes you suspect that those ingredients are what's causing your reaction? Cetyl and Cetearyl alcohols are fatty alcohols which are moisturizing agents and are generally considered to be good for the skin. They are different from the type of alcohol she is speaking about here (usually listed as just straight-up Alcohol or Alcohol denat. on the ingredients list which is used to increase penetration and absorption of the product). But having said that, it's possible to be allergic to any ingredient, just like Niacinamide, which was traditionally thought to be a well-tolerated ingredient by everyone.
@swineinny12 жыл бұрын
Isn’t it ultimately very drying for skin?
@maplecloud98552 жыл бұрын
Yes drying and alcohol can make your skin age faster
@s_shaleh2 жыл бұрын
Not if your skin tolerates it. Many people are sensitive to it but there are also many people who aren't. Fragrance and alcohol in skincare doesn't bother me, but not in perfumes. I can't spray perfume directly on my skin. It will instantly cause burning and redness which doesn't happen with skincare products. I think it really boils down to formulation.
@malinm5582 жыл бұрын
It depends on the formulation. Sunscreens with high amount of alcohol usually contains moisturizing ingredients
