Right on BD!!! This is my third go around. First two times I went to 30 day rehab and was drinking on the way home. This time the shit storm finally hit. Lost my wife my home my kids my career my money and my health. Damn near died. And didn’t give a flyin fuck if I did. But I didn’t. Spent two years in the hospital. I had wet brain ulcerated throat stomach colon bladder. For starters. But I survived. Last two years in an old folks recovery hybrid place. Gonna be out soon now. And back to real life. Scared? Yeah. Sure. Kinda. But mostly excited. I’ve never been in the world sober. I started drinking at sixteen. So I’ve never lived in the world as a sober adult. Ever. Gonna be... Well Hell, I dunno. But it WILL be different. So keep it up. Stay after it. Don’t wait until your sixty to finally get it. Get it this time. The first time. So you can have MORE time like bing the life you were born to have! Good luck Partner! I’m proud of you.

Mike alcoholic/addict. I’m on day 75. Found something in my apartment that was a tool from when I was using. I freaked out. Heart went into my throat. I immediately washed off the remains and threw it away. Went to go to a meeting and it had been cancelled and the app now updated. So on my drive home I’m out Alcoholics Anonymous into my you tube and found this. It worked. This will get me to my 7am meeting. Thankyou AA and this beautiful fellowship of drunks. 4 days sober and I like the clarity and mostly calmness. Went driving for errands and suddenly, I had the old thought, "I'm relaxed, it's Friday, I could go pick up a pint". Yet, Immediately after that I realized how much better I feel, plus, the sense of accomplishment. So...I drove on home. I know it's only been 4 days. Each day I hold onto the fragility of what I'm doing.

Anthony Hopkins gave up drinking when he was 38. My great uncle also gave up drinking when he was 38. His brother, my grandfather, who I never met, was also an alcoholic and died of liver cirrhosis when he was 49. My great uncle is still alive and completely healthy. That is the magnitude of the decision to continue drinking. If you have a problem, be real with yourself and do something about it now before it's too late - you never know how much time you have left to decide.

Take each of these "almosts" that we're blessed with as valuable learning experiences, Ryan. Even full blown relapses can serve as lessons on how to treat our disease. Ask yourself: "What happened? What am I missing in my life? What can I do more to treat my alcoholism?" Drinking is just our feeble attempt to treat our symptoms, until we get desperate enough to try a healthier way. I quit drinking around 5 months ago at age 33, I got out early before the drink really got a hold of me. It did get a hold of my dad though. He ended up living with his mom, drinking his brains out and dying at age 48 from his aorta exploding. His own mother, my grandmother, was sick at the time, and could only crawl along the floor, in order to find her own son, dead in a chair in the living room. She was never the same again. My dad had it all, wife, house, 3 kids, his own accountant business, and lost it all. He ravaged the entire household with his horrible addiction, and mom got me and her out of there before it was to late (my sisters were older and were on with their own lives) Alcohol is NOT to be messed with! It can take hold of anyone, at any time, and it can destroy everything you love and care about! Please, if you are considering quitting, then you already need to quit (that took med 7 years to realize) I quit, and haven't looked back yet.

I stopped drinking in 2001 when I was 29 because I hit rock bottom and woke up in hospital after letting go of the back of a truck I had grabbed onto since I couldn't walk up a hill. I started taking coke because I thought I could handle it. I got caught with 2 kilos and had to skip bail and leave the country. In Spain, I had a major relapse in 2007, started smoking crack, ended up having a heart attack in Paris. After 5 days in ICU, and 6 days in a cardiac rehab centre, I checked out and got drunk, and asked a random guy where I could buy crack, spent a day with Senagalese dudes smoking crack on the street and drinking. I could easily have been killed, I must have had a death wish. I survived that day, went back to Portugal by fucking bus (36 hours) and went back to a gypsy camp where i spent a week on heroin, crack and booze. I spent €14k in those 7 months in 2007. On New Year's day 2008, I quit everything, cold turkey, got my life together, moved to a small town, got a job, met a woman, had a baby and never drank again. I am 50 now, I am fit and healthy. I quit smoking weed last month. I only ever went to a few meetings, but they only made me want to drink. I'll tell ye, there was one AA meeting in North Dublin city with about 200 people, it was one of the hair-raising things I have ever experienced. I feel much better after that share. I've never told anyone those stories.

Today is 106 days sober for me. Between the 60 to 90 day mark a lot of us experience a heavy detox stage, it's quite severe depression and you wonder why you've even bothered, addiction tries to trick you, it wants the dopamine, and when you come out of it, it will be subtle, but it's like being reborn. Alcohol gave me the allure that it would give me the world while it was stealing everything.

Thanks for encouraging people away from drunkenness towards sobriety. I'm from a family of alcoholics and I've been saved and sober for 39 years in a row, since I was converted to Christianity in the old Steuben County Jail, back in '81 at 30 years of age. After 3 years probation in the county probation department, 90 A.A. meetings in 90 days, and some drug and alcohol counseling with a great recovering alcoholic professional counselor, my probation ended in '85. I've stayed saved and sober for 39 years in a row now without a singular relapse in this entire time, miraculously. I've been blessed with actually alot of moral support from quite a cross section of this nation, and pray that you'll all be blessed in return. Thanks for sharing this great Anthony Hopkins testimony. He has a great testimony and delivers this testimony with such eloquence, great humor, humorous witticism, and creative inspirational style.

The end of 06 I quit because it killed me in the hospital. I have talked with the devil and The Lord at the same poker table. I have ten thousand stories about me and you. I quit several times only to curl up in a ball each time in pools of sweat with nightmares constantly running through my head. The devil kept telling me to drink and die, drink and die each time I quit. Then one day I said that's it! I am tired of being tired and sick of being sick. I learned to view the morning with fresh eyes and a deep breath. I sometimes tease myself thinking I can go back for just one drink. I know this is something I cannot do. I will always be one drink away from my final bender... and I am okay with that too. If you struggle with alcohol, I struggle with you. We belong to the same human club... and there is no shame, only better more important things to accomplish in our lives. Bless the lot of you, J.

I Love Hopkins. The Welsh were the Irish who couldn't swim. Brilliant 😆7 months sober now and everything is becoming so much clearer. When i found i was drinking too much i slways thought of Anthony and greatly admired him ending booze Dec 29 1975 and never going back. That is astonishing discipline and look how successful He has become. If He carried on as a soak I doubt He would have done so much. He obviously knew it's all or nothing from here that night dec 28 75. Fantastic inspiration!

I relapsed after five years and it has taken thirty years to get sober for any length of time. I had a year here and there but wasn't really ready. I'm a year and a half sober now and feel that this can work. My wife died in 2018 and I went on a rampage of drinking which ended with me getting two DUI'S Three months apart. I was blacked out the last time. I was sitting at home and drinking some saki and the next thing was waking up in the hospital with police outside my door. I had no recollection of any of it I knew I could not drink safely anymore and got into a rehab as quickly as I could. Thing's are so much better now being sober. The name of the rehab is Ridgeview Hospital in Ohio and it's a good place. The number is 419 968 2950 Give them a call, they even pick you up and take you home for 20 dollars. Good luck

Day 4013 for me. Ever since I quit AA. ( After each meeting I wound up in my pub - upset and disgusted by all the holy blather ). Ever since I turned once and forever away from all Jesusses and that-like unvisible "friends" in the sky and devils in hell. There was no gaad to save me. There was the love of my friends, who stood by me for so many years. And the great health care system in a rather civilized European country. After my last crash ( 4 days icu ) THEY rang ME at 22:00h ; I saw the number and thought Thatsit, now they are kicking me out, after having spent enormous amounts of money on me. But no - they asked me if I wouldn't like to undergo another therapy. I thought it was a joke - but no, twasnt. I even was allowed to choose the kind of therapy and the clinic myself. And that moment I realized : There IS help - and it comes from other human beings around me. And from the computers of my insurance ;-) ... ... ( Now probably someone will explain to me, that computer was gaaad or the staff in the offices... kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ja2RqJuDp7Oyd2w.html )

Thank you for this. I spent years drinking and I lost so much with it relationships, family, career and I couldn't calculate how much self respect. While I was drinking which was 50 years of my life, basically all of it I never realised that it was alcohol that cost me this. I decided to stop for a month, first in half a decade. I felt better physically and mentally but, strangely, I also felt remorse at all the time, opportunities and life wasted. I felt so bad I needed a drink to feel better. It was then I realised I was an alcoholic. Listening to these stories realises I am not alone.

Many times, people think they aren't an alcoholic because they think there is a specific profile & type of alcoholic. I am here to tell you there is not. I remember the first time I heard this. I could not shake that "feeling" that the voice sounded so freaking familiar. It gives me comfort & hope that even Sir Anthony is not immune. Thank you for posting this.
