In Glengarry Glen Ross, Alec Baldwin plays the character Blake, almost earning Baldwin an Oscar for the role. The salestalk presented is one of the finest ever, allthough sarcastic, it contains the foundations of a well meditated salesmen.

Lets all appreciate the subtlety of the moment when Alec says PUT THE COFFEE DOWN, he actually quickly checks the board to see if Levine sold something and only after seeing Levine sold 0 on the board, he confronts him. That makes this moment more reasonable

After watching this video I sold a customer a small fish hook, then, a medium fish hook, then a larger fish hook. Then, I sold him a new fishing rod. Then, I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down the coast. I told him he was going to need a boat, so we went down to the boat department, and I sold him a twin engine Boston Whaler. Then, he said he didn't think his car would pull it, so I took him down to the automobile department and sold him a 4x4 truck with all the bells and whistles. I sold all this to a guy came in to buy feminine products for his wife, and I said, 'Dude, your weekend's shot. You should go fishing.'"

I agree . I watch this scene all the time. I just wish the director would've had Ricky Roma in the room with all of them! I have no idea why they didn't do it that way. Maybe the two dynamic characters (Pacino and Baldwin) would've clashed?

@@rickycee87 Yes. That’s why. Plus Roma is doing good and the higher-ups don’t wanna made him pissed up (could lead to losing a lot of sales). In Glengarry Glen Ross, this performance by Baldwin is probably the best cameo character of all time in cinema history.

The DVD commentary on this scene was pretty cool. Baldwin himself admitted that he got so into forming the character that he literally couldn't be around any of the other great actors in the movie because he had to maintain this superior "I'm the greatest fucking salesman in the world lecturing you losers" the whole time to pull it off properly. Absolute magic.

It's a vignette, a tiny snapshot of a handful of blokes in a cut-throat business in tough times. It's dark night outside and raining like hell, and each one of them is trying to make it, in his own way, whatever the consequences. I loved the energy, the interaction between the characters. I loved the movie. It's like any other piece of art. Some people love it, some people don't get it.

What's funny is my boss at Guitar Center brought in a TV and played this scene for us as inspiration. It was his favorite and he quoted it all the time "coffee's for closers!" That's how I found out about it. Yes, life is selling. It might take you 50 years to figure out but everything you do is selling. Every time you submit a project, complete a job, ask for a raise, you're selling an idea, a product or a service.

His authoritative speech is really a misdirection. You can see by what happens later in the film that, as far as is shown, the leads really are useless, even for the most skilled salesman. Perhaps Blake is a good salesman, but his coming to the office is more like an opportunity for an alpha male gorilla to beat his chest rather than serious advice. There isn't much of any 'truth' to be found in this film, because it remains ambiguous whether the salesmen are bad at their job, or whether the company is delusional.

The "Always be Closing" line reminds me of Musashi Miyamoto's "Always be cutting,"from his book the Five Rings. After teaching the five stances for sword fighting Musashi says that you should have a no-stance-stance, not fixated on any of the stances, or any move, but always be cutting, because cutting your opponent is the main, the only thing.
