it’s a shame “sweet smell of success” was so overlooked at the time of its release. what lancaster and curtis pull off in that movie is sensational. both should have been nominated, easily.

Charles Laughton was repeatedly offered the role of the colonel in "Bridge on the River Kwai", and he just kept turning it down. Finally they settled on Alec Guinness. Years later, Laughton was asked why he turned down the role that won the Oscar for Guinness, and he replied that he just didn't understand the part; but when he saw Alec Guinness as the colonel, he finally understood it. Alec Guinness was quoted as saying Laughton's words meant more to him than winning the Oscar!

Laughton didn’t get the part because he was uninsurable to film in Ceylon.....due to his physical condition...

I'm so glad a lot of the scenes for bridge on the river kwai was shot in Sri Lanka particularly over a river called Kelani in the Kithulgala area, in my ancestral home province of Sabaragamuwa. It introduced me to the actor Sir Alec Guinness whose portrayal of diverse characters is truely memorable, including that of Obi-Wan Kenobi

How very true. Every actor in that room brought something to that film which made it incredible. My favourite would be Joseph Sweeney. The look he gave when he was challenged and asked " what would you know about being lonely " . And if it hadn't been for his character the vote could well have remained 11 - 1. Yes, a truly marvelous film.

@zarabada61254 жыл бұрын
@L W, you are getting your decades mixed up. Alec played Fagin in 1948's Oliver Twist and not 1968's Oliver! It was a controversial portrayal as the director chose to use prosthetics and make-up that made Alec look like the original illustrations of Fagin in Dicken's book but also played on Jewish stereotypes. Coming so soon after the holocaust triggered protests at some screenings.

I think that Alec Guinness is outstanding, however, I am in agreement that the Academy committed a tremendous oversight in not nominating Andy Griffith for his portrayal of Lonesome Rhodes in Kazan's "A Face In The Crowd"; extraordinary work in a prescient film. I also believe that Lancaster and Curtis should have been recognized for "Sweet Smell Of Success". I think that the Commercial failure of both contributed to the absence of nominations. "Paths Of Glory" wasn't acknowledged either.
