Skypiea encapsulates what a lot of readers love about One Piece. Adventure, world building, creativity from Oda, emotional moments and probably the most passionate ending to an arc to date (imo ofc).

Just so you know, about Wapols' cover story: Wapol specifically gained power because he invented a new material when he ate all those toys. He called the new material Wapometal. It's incredibly tough, like steel, but can be manipulated by human hands, like plastic!

#AJPIECE That panel of everyone partying around the bonfire is Oda's 3rd favorite panel ever. In fact he said he made the entire Skypiea story just so he could draw it. Also did you realize Zoro can do long ranged attacks now with his swords? And I'm not sure if you noticed but the whole Zoro and South Bird interaction is extra funny because Zoro was lost with a literal compass following him.

#AJPiece When describing Usopp, Luffy usually describes him as a liar (instead of a marksman, a handyman, or any of his other qualities). This happens once in Arlong park when Luffy is listing the things he can't do and again in Arabasta when he is telling Ace about his crew. Maybe there are more examples but these are the ones I remember. Now, I used to think this was pretty funny, and I still think it is, but now I see it's probably more than a comedic resource. I think it relates to two things you said: first, in syrup village, about the value of stories (or lies), and later in drum island, about how the context can change a negative trait into a positive one. In the same way that Luffy accepts Chopper (and prompts him to accept himself) by calling him a monster, he is accepting Usopps lies and seeing them as a good thing.
@Matrunks

#AJPiece: The moment when the wolves dance with the crew is such an evocative panel of joy, togetherness and simplicity. To howl at the moonlight with wolves and dance in fire is such a primal act. It shows that the crew cares more about adventure and will always cherish the culture of the people and creatures in each island and won’t covert their ideals into others. That the ideal of freedom and brotherhood is universal. Oda states that his was his favorite panel he’s drawn.

Skypiea is such a unique arc in One Piece. It is polarizing in the fandom but I compare it to Greed Island from HxH where both aren’t the best arc in the series but they stand out for the better in my opinion due to how different they are.

Lots of people who say that it’s filler are probably just kids. They are only thinking about the arc on a surface level, and a lot of the things that make skypia great are things that you have to think about. Other people only care about the fights and power-scaling, and they usually talk trash about the earlier arcs in One Piece.

#AJPiece Hi AJ, really loving all your reviews so far! I just want to point out that Robin calling Luffy by name at this point (chapter 255) was a translation mistake, what she actually says is something like "What an amusing bunch of people. Do they want an accident to happen that badly?" (VIZ translated it as "You're so funny, Luffy. Are you that eager for danger?") It's very important for Robin's character that she doesn't call the straw hats by name, so I thought I should tell you. Keep up the great videos!

#AJPiece Cool thing to keep in mind at this point. Now you've been introduced to all 3 types of Devil Fruits: Logia: where you become an element, like Ace, Smoker & Enel (They are considered the strongest since you can't harm them, unless with a counter element, like Luffy did with Croc) Zoan: where you turn into a specific animal, like Pell & Dalton Paramythia/Paramecia: category for all the other unique superhuman powers which don't fall into a specific category, like Luffy's Gum-Gum or Wapol's Munch-Munch What's interesting when it comes to Devil Fruits is that they often their wielder's personality. Look at Croc & Luffy for example. Oh and Skypiea is definitely not just a detour. But what I love about it is that it does seem like one at the start of the arc. Until by the end of the arc you learn its history & how it connects to the OP world as a whole.
@Ry9022
@Ry9022 Жыл бұрын
So, now that they've all been names, the three types of Devil Fruits. Logia(fruits that confer an elemental power like smoke, fire, lighting and sand), Zoan(fruits that confer the power of an animal like Ox, Human, Horse) and Paramieca(fruits that confer 'superhuman' powers or effects like a rubber body, the ability to split their body apart, generate wax).

SPOILER WARNING 18:30 Skypiea is extremely important to the overall plot. It's not obvious now, and it won't be totally obvious going forward. The observant tin foil hat wearing conspiracy theorists went wild with the context this arc gives to what is revealed later. It helps a lot if you know Japanese and are familiar with all of the word play Oda loves so much. The subtle hints and symbolism are insane. (this was a good comment from someone but they refused to spoiler warning it when they alluded to future stuff so I'm commenting this here in case I have to delete their comment)

I don’t really see what rules Nojiko out. Why can’t it be her as well, out of curiosity? I’m sure that Nami got some of her traits from Belle-mere (especially the ones explicitly stated as such) but the moment with Aisa was directly reminiscent of Nojiko’s moment with that boy, which is why I drew the comparison.

#AJPiece One thing I've always enjoyed about this series is the way even supporting characters still get a lot of distinct characterization. As you've expressed an appreciation for character writing, I'd like to ask about the major antagonist groups. Of the three you've read so far - Arlong's crew, Baroque Works, and Enel's vassals - not counting Arlong, Crocodile, and Enel themselves, which group did you like the best? What would you say you look for in the ideal "group of henchmen" and do you think there might be better/worse ones in the future?
@flint9668
@flint9668 Жыл бұрын
#AJPiece Brahma used flashing pistols to district Zoro but Zoro was able to maintain his concentration despite that, cutting the air with that focus. later he fought Owm who lacked the same concentration. Owm was focused on everything but the fight, the constant falling of voice taking his attention away. While Zoro, despite not possessing Mantra; read Owm's movement and strike him down with pure concentration. Another thing I find interesting is that on Jaya, Robin called out Zoro for ruthlessly attacking the centipedes to which Zoro responded "they challenged him" and while he does not pity bugs, he does have pity for women. Even though Robin was the one who challenged Enel.

#AJPIECE Zoro can fight women, but because of Kuina lamenting about her limitations due to her being a girl Zoro chooses not to unless he needs to step in and do so and seeing Enel go all out and strike Robin upset Zoro. It's different from Sanji, who is completely unable to strike a woman due to his chivalrous code.

The idea of deliberately refusing something Oda put on my plate is so incomprehensible to me. Yes, Skypiea is a diversion. Yes it's cut off from the wider world and story, but the notion that this makes it unworthy of attention is frankly disrespectful to the whole idea of One Piece. Luffy and his Crew do not sail merely for the destination, but also for the journey - The memories, experiences, and adventures they find along the way. the trial the face, the revelations about the world, the wonderment, the people they meet. These things are so fundamental to the storytelling, and Skypiea is a great encapsulation of what the story represents. In addition to that, it's an amazing arc, with important themes, characters, and history pertaining to the wider story. It also contains some of the most tragic tales and joyous laughs. It even has important stuff for later that I won't go into here. It shouldn't merely be stepped over to get to the "point". Just recalling some of the comedic moments as you went through this made me laugh out loud and want to rewatch the arc. It's too bad so many just follow this story for what they consider to be the "cool" and "important" stuff, but I'm glad you appreciate it for what it is, in spite of what it may lack.

#AJPiece: the way Oda tackles colonialism and opression through Wyper, Enel and Gan Fall is incredibly sophisticated and extremely underrated. while the circumstances are obviously very different from real life colonialism, the question being tackled is very much a real question which is how does one make up for what their anscestors did. its obvious that while Wyper is taking his agenda to an extreme, he's still in the right that just making peace while keeping upper yard holy ground will do nothing to help the shandorians. what they need is their homeland back and not to live under the thumb of the skypeians and regardless of Gan Fall's good intentions, unless he can offer proper reperations Wyper won't accept it (very much mirroring and criticizing cases of real life colonialism where the natives who got subjegated by people who considered themselves more cultured and considered it their holy duty to conquer far more often then not never paid back a penny for their reckless and cruel destruction). Enel, very much like Crocodile before him, acts as the embodiment of that opression. but simultaniously Enel is a symptom of the skypeians deciding that the upper yard is holy and must be ruled by a god. in much the same way that Wyper is the embodiment of how desperation within opressed groups can lead to radicalization. the entire conflict is just so well realized without Oda drawing your eye to it to show off or preach, he just puts the conflict there and lets the readers come to their own conclusions by coming along on the crew's journey. once we follow the crew and make our own way to the end, who knows, we might reach a different conclusion then they will and thats the magic of it. Oda doesn't put these themes in to challenge his protagonist. we all know Luffy doesn't care about the intricate politics of these manners. but if someone as simple as him can help these people out by just having the determination to help, then so can anyone reading the story.

I think that first AJpiece comment is just straight wrong. Here's why: Luffy just wants her to trust in them. He says that Vivi is constantly putting her own life at risk while also seemingly trying to steer the crew away from danger. Luffy sees no problems with dying in the pursuit of your dreams. Of course he doesn't want anyone to die and he will get angry for the sake of the people he cares about but dying in the pursuit of your dream is not something he detests. He just dislikes that Vivi doesn't seem to trust in his strength and in the strength of his friends. She doesn't seem willing to lead them towards Crocodile which is at the heart of this whole conflict. Instead she desperately tries to find the Rebel camp in order to prevent a conflict entirely. Luffy thinks that's naive. People die. Which of course maddens Vivi but it was the harsh truth she needed to hear. After a short scuffle she seems to understand what he's trying to say. Trust in your friends. They want to help. Let them help. There's no reason for them to be there if everything could be resolved with a simple discussion. This is just my opinion and I have no intention to start any drama. I'm sorry if this offends anyone. It was not the intent. I just wanted to explain my thoughts on the whole thing.

I really don’t get the people who say this is filler. There are such great moments of world building, character development, and theme exploration in this arc that makes it integral to the overarching story of One Piece. Skypiea is right up there with Alabasta for me personally. Plus this is the first arc in the story where Oda’s art really began to stand out to me as beautiful and symbolic at times. The most likely explanation could be that the people saying it’s filler have only seen the anime. Because as someone who did start with the anime I will admit this arc is where the pacing started to get real bad.

11:49 Okay, so just an unimportant nobody here. However, you’re the only person on KZfaq that I have personally seen make this specific type of video essay review on anime. I absolutely LOVE the long form factor of these videos, and pretty much rely on them as somethong to listen to while working. Naruto is a great idea for continuing the long form videos. This is just an idea, not really even a recommendation, just some thing I am thinking. But you could do the same thing for smaller titles, and lesser known titles but shorter. Basically reviewing and bringing light to smaller animanga that you enjoy.

@AJPiece Just so you know, the book has just cemented the three basic types of Devil Fruits. Zoan Fruits allow for animal transformation, Logia Fruits allow conjuration, transformation, and manipulation of a certain force of nature with all the strengths and weaknesses of that force along with immunity to conventional attacks and weaponry. Everything else is a Paramecia/Paramythia fruit.

I don't know how people might feel about this, but the Korean manhwa Tower of God is pretty long with a lot of interesting lore, although there does seem to be some love/hate relationship with the series. But if you're interested in a long running series, that might be a good one for these types of videos!

I find people's opinions of Skypeia to be mid. They don't understand its purpose and the masterful writing of Oda. And they always complain that Luffy is off screen too long. Maybe for some fans, but in the end, that's Luffy being Luffy.

#AJPiece: I'll try to keep this short but just had to say that I've been watching your content for a couple years now, I love it, keep it going. Despite that this is the first time I felt compelled to comment. Also English isn't my first language so I'm sorry if I can't express myself clearly but I'll try my best to not sound confusing. My first point is about the Viz translation. I feel it was a bit of a disservice the fact that they didn't translate the word Kami (神) wich means literally God. If from the start of the arc all you keep hearing/reading is "God this, God that" you start to wonder "Is this literally the God of the One Piece World? He knows what's happening even if he's not present, he gives divine punishment almost instantly, what's going on?" Enel refers itself as God all the time, that also a play on word with Kamisama (God) and Kaminari (Thunder), and that's why Gan Fall says to Enel "God is just as title" as to say "don't be silly thinking that you're truly a divine being" but Enel very much does believe he is a God. When saying "God is fear itself " he isn't saying that as a ruler but as a delusional megalomaniac who sees himself not just as above everyone but as divine. His word is law not only for man but for nature, so he will bring down Skipea. If you one day re read the arc with this in mind you can pick up some other details like Zoro not believing in God. Second point is about "Varse" or "Vearth" as I first knew it. Which "can't be anything" Vearth is literally Earth/Soil. You may also attribute this to the translation, cause the name Vearth made this very clear to me when first watching the arc, also Gan Fall's explanation about it made unambiguous that this part of Jaya came from the Blue Sea and not the other way around, I find your confusion about this funnier than the South bird with arms. With this in mind, you can make a bit more sense about the conflict between Shandians and Sky People. Shandians rightfully saying this land belongs to us, but out of spite don't wanting to share it with the Sky People. And that's why Gan Fall can't just return it to them, after all he "also likes the taste of Pumpkin Juice". That's the reason of Wyper's violent reaction, he thinks Gan Fall is provoking him, he gets his pumpkins from his land, his soil. But Gan Fall is just trying to say he and his people can't live without it anymore, after all at this point they have been living with the benefits of having this much Vearth for hundreds of years. And lastly, Wyper gets mad about a little bag of Varse cause he sees that as not just as meaningless, but insulting. He doesn't want a handful of earth. He wants all his land back. I failed to keep it short, sorry.

#AJPiece As you probably have realized Oda is one of the bests when it comes to creativity and world building. Skypiea is such a grand and amazing place and really ads another layer to the depth of the one piece world. With that said, what other kind of islands and places would you like to see the strawhats visit? Bonus question: what's your top 5 XC2 characters? Personally im a Nia fan :3

#AJPiece Idk if you noticed this but there are very clear parallels between the Shandians and the Skypeians and Native Americans and Americans. Shandians look very much like native Americans with their dark skins and war paint. Even their homes look like wigwams. The story of a bunch of natives absolutely shook apart when out of nowhere a bunch of starry eyed people they’ve never met before take their beautiful and wondrous home. Hell even the real world story of El Dorado led to many conquistadors torturing and brutalizing Native Americans for directions to it. I don’t buy for a second Oda didn’t take inspiration from the story of the Native Americans. It’s too coincidental. What stuck out to me though was the message Ganfall left us with when he told Wyper that he cannot give back the land and their homes because people live there now who have nothing to do with the centuries old conflict. It was ballsy to make Wyper the bad guy but I appreciate the underlying message and that there were many Shandians who disagreed with him but we’re too scared to say anything. It’s awful what happened to the Shandians so many years ago. But no one is alive anymore who had anything to do with it. The fight is meaningless. Ganfall wants peace, the Shandians are doing well enough in their homes. But a small select few of warmongers like Wyper are dragging all of the Shandians into conflict even those who don’t want it. And if he invaded and kicked the innocent Skypeians out of their current homes over a conflict that they had nothing to do with, how is he any better than the Skypeians that kicked the innocent Shandians out of their home 400 years ago? (Note: Yes I know, the Skypeians don’t live in upper Yard. But when that flashback happened it was before Eneru’s rule and Eneru personally kicked them out. My point still stands) It feels like Oda is showing the dark side of knowing your history and how it means nothing if you use it as an excuse to repeat it. Ganfall was willing to compromise and find ways for peace and something everyone could agree to. But Wyper’s hatred, prejudice, and unwillingness to let go of the past got in the way of his own goal and hurt his people and their ability to get something better and have peace. You can even see in Aisa how Wyper’s blind prejudice affected her with how she treated Ganfall. The prejudice got passed down.

The reason people say what they do about skypeia is that it doesn’t advance the plot at all, you can skip skypeia and not miss much important other than the intro of dials, that said, it’s a good arc and it serves to warm us up to robin before the coming arcs where we learn more about her

#AJPIECE I love the intro with Gan Fall. The way they just adjust to the air quality after being told its too thin is hilarious. Also when they find out that there were more "legal ways" to reach the Sky Island, since they're Pirates, and obviously would never be able to access those routes. It just shows how isolated everything is in general since The Straw Hats and the people of Jaya don't know about the existence of it and/or believed it to be only a myth but we still find out normal everyday citizens from the Blue Sea can travel there without the stream. Makes me wonder what other ways would be used if that's the case. Also, I'm loving your reviews. I can't wait for your next video!

#AJPiece Oda is a very emotional person and he doesn't want his story to depress himself and his readers honestly his characters as well. At its core One Piece is a silly pirate story and for as long as he can Oda tries to cling to that silly lighthearted vibe for as long as he could. I'm not gonna say anything about the future but like I said as long as he could. That's why he has issues legitimately killing off characters.

#AJPIECE I interpreted Enels "Fear is God" speech to be about more than just leadership. The reality of dreaming is a lot of luck is involved. Oda does not shy away from this, Luffy gets so lucky in the face of uncertainty it's been pondered if he's favored by God. But It's the fear of that uncertainty that kills dreams so often. As Enel says, people have called things outside their control and that make them fear for their lives acts of God since ancient times. And that failing your dream is akin to death. So Enel then concludes that these are one in the same. They don't fear God, fear *is* God. So for someone like Enel who himself has a great dream, he became someone who controls every situation, knows all, never has to fear death, and can command fear at all times. Those are not things mortal men can do, so he became God. He's a twisted image of a "dreamer" who would steal everyone else's freedom just to ensure his own.

#AJPiece I think the reason why Robin called Luffy by his name up until now is because she doesn’t recognize him as her capitaine, the others roles don’t imply any hierarchy over her, but him being the capitaine she can’t accept him as one since she isn’t part of the crew. Anyway thanks for these videos, love the content, all the best to you !

#AJPiece do you have any strong feelings about the Viz translation softening some of the religious language for the arc, ie changing priest to vassal and leaving the title kami untranslated? Also, I’m sure your community has already let you know, but Blackbeards sniper Van Ogre’s name should be properly translated as Van Augure, which is more fitting given the fate theme for Blackbeard’s crew

I know skypeia gets a lot of unnecessary hate but you want to know what i think was a big let down. We are never shown a living dial afaik. We see snails in the blue sea and they are used for everything. we see them alive we see baby snails we see big snails. But skypeia runs on dials. we know dials can go extinct which means they are still growing and living somewhere this isnt like ancient shells they found.

18:30 Skypiea is extremely important to the overall plot.

#AJPiece if you want to read naruto i highly encouraged it. its a reason why its so popular. also will you make videos on like this or just full analysises? to be honest naruto videos tend to get strikes (not as hard as one piece though)as well but in naruto you have so much wisdom spreaded around that i would love to see your opinion on them. Kishimoto (the author ) takes some inspirations from Togashi in the story as well, so it will so much fun either way. just take care of yourself P.S: while df do not add much in the story , they tend to symbolize the characters in the narrative. there is a theme of fate in one piece and since df powers can be only taken by finding and eating them , it depends on the circumstances of the person , to determine what power they get. Crocodile for instance is in the narrative , someone who wants to leave Alabasta "dry". And so its interesting that he got a df that dries anything he touches. almost like it was set by fate. yes df arent that interesting as a power system , they are basic but they do their job very well

If so I’d love to hear your thoughts. There are certain parts of the series that the anime manages to bring to the next level. An example from an earlier arc is Dr. Heralok’s speech. 1:51:10 There are several things there, and yes, Kuina is surely a part of it: He hasn't found someone of Kuina's caliber, who would own him time and time again. But you also have the fact that Zoro is a follower of the Bushido code, basically Japanese equivalent to European Chivalry. And what's more important, I think, is that Zoro is deeply tied to Buddhism (him not believing in god, for example, or the numbers he uses in his attacks). One of the most basic principles of Buddhism is to preserve life above everything else, and women and children are way more important to that end than men. And I'm almost sure that he says, at some point, that he doesn't like cutting women or children, but he will if he has to. Honestly don't remember where, and if it is a spoiler, it's not something major, so I feel confident in typing it out, but I apologise, regardless. Regardless, I think the main reason is, again, the demographic the story is aimed for: boys 12-16.

@nahte123456 Жыл бұрын
#AJPiece, so I guess this is the time to point this out, but without going to deeply into it. Zoro's points about not believing in gods is rather ironic. He's the only strawhat to talk about fate and luck so factually like when he did the whole throw the sword into the air above his arm, and he's VERY tied to Buddhism. If you watch the names of his attacks many, not all but many, are tied directly to Buddhism. EX the last attack he used on Mihawk was "Three Thousand Worlds" a reference to a Buddhist teaching of 3000 worlds making a single instant (I am not Buddhist and it's complex to talk about, but just understand the reference), and you'll notice the number 108 and variables of it like multiplications appear a lot, such as with his 108 Pound Canon in this set of chapters against Ohm, with 108 earthly temptations keeping you from nirvana being a Buddhist belief. So you know, keep an eye out on Zoro's naming scheme, lots of interesting ones.

#ajpiece something I find really cool that we get to see all over one piece is how even in the climax arcs like arlong park, alabasta, and even this arc is odas willingness to give foreshadowing for example arlong park with the mention of jinbea in alabasta with ace and the paper he gave to luffy and this arc with the ship being repaired it all shows a level of planning few story tellers could even dream of and highlights properly the biggest strength of long running series

It's also quite different from a shonen like one piece or haikyuu, it has a darkness to it that is really enjoyable. Since you're a hxh fan, you'd like it I think.
