But, that's generally not how emergencies come about. In this video, we discuss why you need four emergency funds (in addition to the typical/traditional emergency fund) in order to financially protect you in the case of an emergency and to keep you on track towards your journey to financial independence.

Great point about having different emergency funds! I'm self employed in the wedding industry and obviously got hit hard with cancellations during the pandemic. Something that I learned from that is that I need a small business emergency fund also that will cover the basics of keeping my business doors open if something goes wrong!

I like saving emergency funds in different levels: Stash Cash, Bank Savings, On line Savings, but I was hoping you would get into a little more detail about which Vanguard funds that are conservative enough to use as an emergency fund, such as VASIX Life Strategy income. Vanguard money markets offer lower interest rates than my bank savings.

Having cash at home is important. There was a time during a natural disaster where access to ATMs were difficult. I do use a 2 fund approach. 1) Rainy day fund at $1000 and 2) 6 months of essential living expenses in high yield savings and cd ladder. Peace of mind is important for me. Thanks for the tips.

I love your videos. Personal finance is one of my favorite topics. Love the sock! I used to do that, too! Now I keep about $250 in every purse and a hidden stash in my car. I’ve had my identity stolen a few times, so I now keep $10k in my safe with my passport (which, I’ve been told, makes me a flight risk if I’m ever arrested and post bail lol), SS card, birth certificate, deeds, etc. And I DO have a Gucci emergency fund! Lol. There’s a pair of loafers I’ve been stalking on consignment and when I find them on sale cheap enough, they’re mine!

These only covers emergencies when you are local. When you are traveling, exceptially when you are traveling aboard, most of these EFs will not be available to you, at all. You can not take your local bank with you, most of times, your credit card or debit card will not work, same goes to the whatever online bank. You probably could not open a local bank there eighter... So, challenge to you: Emergency fund for travel. ;)

Summary 1) cash hidden at home ($1,000) 2) one month living expenses near by home (but not at regular bank we’re you might be tempted to transfer funds for checking account and other expenses) 3) three credit cards , Visa, MasterCard, American Express - should have healthy lines of credit to only use for an emergency like airline tickets. 4) friends or family - have relationships in place that can have your back financially in the event you can not fund yourself. Such as, you get hauled to jail in error. You might need a special friend or family to step up with bail money until the misunderstanding is resolved.

Great video! A very well thought out plan on how to be prepared for an emergency! I have one suggestion about the 3 credit cards. My rule of thumb is 1 year of an EF in a high yield account. Also, I agree with having funds in a local bank and having a "go to" person. As far as money in the house, I typically only keep $100. If I need more than that in a crisis, I'll head to my go to EF person and withdraw funds. 😉 Nice video!

@OurRichJourney
@OurRichJourney 5 жыл бұрын
Doma Decimator - YES! We have totally thought about it, but haven't gotten around to it yet. If/when we get around to creating a course (or a book!), we want it to be incredible, useful, and to add value to people's lives. With that being said, to do something like that would take quite a bit of time, so we're slowly brainstorming and outlining ideas because we don't want to rush something out that would be mediocre. If only there were more hours in the day! LOL! Thanks for watching! :)

Great content but I don’t think the credit card emergency fund is necessary. I am aware how important it is to have options in regards to access to cash but what’s the traditional emergency fund for? If you want to get a ticket, you can easily transfer those funds to your checking account.. The other 3 are doable but oh well. Different folks different strokes !!

My EF is a CD Ladder covering 10 months of benefits/income with a small slush fund and accessible CCs... The bulk of my CD ladder is held 2-3 times longer than the Early Withdrawal penalty...So yes if I do have to access the CDs I do pay a penalty... but because of the age of the CDs they have already earned more than they are penalized for early withdrawal...I mean... sure... but it's an Emergency Fund ... right?... It's not supposed to be used for anything other than emergencies

Love the levels of emergency funds!!!! I am self employed (i have low to moderate income, but my husband has the much higher income and stability in his job) I am a personal trainer and health coach, and i train clients in my home and travel to their homes. It is a roller coaster of income fluctuations over the past 23 years of training. What would be my emergency fund? The one i have in a higher interest online account (which i already have and am building). Instead of the 3 to 6 months, do you think i should aim for 1 year of expenses for myself, as some years i lose over 50% of my income, some years i double or triple income, and in the past i kept getting into terrible debt as i did not have an expense problem, but an income problem. I have so far just about 7 months total of monthly expenses (for myself and my business expenses) saved. I think saving 12 months would help my anxiety of losing income again and having that fund to cover expenses when business is slow. Your thoughts?

Could you clarify why the 6 months emergency fund is better sitting in a bank rather than a taxable brokerage account? Since your brokerage account is already loaded, even a 50% market crash will have more than enough left to cover six months. Sure, no one wants to sell low, but if it's sitting in a bank then it never had a chance to grow in the first place. And being a taxable account means no taxes or penalties from withdrawing from the principal. I have the same question about the 2-3 years living expense fund that you keep in case of a market crash. That's not kept in a bank, is it?

Amex, visa, and MC are CC networks not 'CC companies', although Amex does have issuing and acquiring bank arms. Visa and MC, however, do not issue CCs. Issuing banks such as Citi, Chase, BofA, Wells are examples of banks with issuing arms which issue CCs specific to a given network.

Not a fan of hording a stash of cash (as an American). Having spare IDs at your parents house and in a safety deposit should be enough to get situated after having ID cards stolen.

LOL! At least you know yourself ;-) But if you can somehow manage not to use it, it will be very helpful when an instant emergency hits.

How much do you recommend to have in credit card limits all together, amongst the 3 credit cards? Or even separately? I only have 1 credit card. Do you suggest getting one of each credit card?; American Express, MasterCard and Visa?
@TheJasonVitug
@TheJasonVitug 3 жыл бұрын
Using credit cards as a potential fund source for an emergency really depends on what your basic living expenses are and estimating how much access to credit you’ll need. I find a good rule of thumb is $5,000 limit but it’s important to see about cash advance limits. I found when I needed cash from credit I could only access $1000 which was helpful but less than I needed to pa my for rent. Landlord didn’t accept credit. Really build up your cash cushion!

@@ingridp4457 Thanks for the not very useful comment. I like to look into all venues. That's one of the reasons we are all here anyway. To have some information handed to us from people with more experience. Besides, I'm only twelve, but even as a child, I know the worst of all traits, is the illusion of intelligence and the biggest mistake is not to ask questions for the fear of being judged.

Folks, do not depend on your credit cards as your emergency fund. Use your debit card. Make sure you have emergency loaded in that account. The credit cards will not help you but instead they will give you another crisis to deal with after the crisis you are dealing with.

I love keeping my 3-6 months of living expenses with Marcus by Goldman Sachs. I keep $10K in that and plan to develop others: 1. A Debt Service emergency fund in a checking account --> this is for 3-6 months of mortgage & loan payments. 2. A Repair fund --> appliance replacement, car repairs, something that breaks and costs a lot 3. Real Estate Fund --> a money market account that I'm putting money in with the plan to purchase a property at some point (but can write a check from quickly) 4. Family Fund --> for family emergencies.
