I am so glad I subscribed, my own siblings laughs at me because I still live in my small 2 bed flat I bought in 2006, still have my iPhone 6 and I don’t drive. They think my son doesn’t have quality of life. But he holiday with the grand parents every year, does karate, I am learning a lot with you; I am learning that I am living within my means and need a side business. As a single parent sometimes it’s difficult when you doing the right thing for your family and your extended family make you feel that you not giving your child quality of life. My son wanted an nitendo, together we sold many of his older clothes than bought it. He is 10 and already great at spotting savings on supermarkets. We just need to learn investing that’s we’re i am struggling.

Grew up with my father telling me that it's not what you make, it's what you save. I try to save for the entire year in the first quarter of each new year and then the rest of the year, we relax and don't have to worry as much about it. We spend a lot of money buying organic high quality foods but to me its worth it and speak very regularly to my little kids about staying debt free and definitely not having outstanding loans for consumer items. We enjoy life and our vacations but definitely stress the importance of investing first. My kids love your channel by the way

Great video guys! We aren't living paycheck to paycheck anymore, but I remember the days when I would mindlessly shop for clothes and accessories. When you said materialistic things make kids "happy", I said materialistic things make kids "shut up." LOL, temporarily usually if it's a toy but a device makes them disappear, which is not good. It's unfortunate people buy things to make their kids go away when you should be spending time together as a family.

"You're not suppose to have a car note forever." Nice. I grow-up in a "YOU CAN'T TAKE IT WITH YOU" community. Everyone spent all their money on themselves and kids and whatever they wanted, cause you can't take it with you when you die. Well, when I became a father, as a Black American, I became very very very consumed with giving my children a leg-up financially. That meant, I had to leave something for them...Period. So after I decided, I was gonna leave something for my children to build on; I started looking and found my way. My go-to book for anyone seriously wanting to do stop-living-check-to-check. THE RICHEST MAN IN BABYLON :-) Forgive my capitals :-)

However, I started working on clearing my credit cards. I've not earned an income this year but God has been faithful to me. Gave up my job due to family commitment. I'll be applying your tips to finances and hope to stop living from paycheck to paycheck. Thank you for mentioning the book above. I've looked it up and already bought it on google ebooks. As a six figure earner in the Bay Area, it's been a trip to see my neighbors "pity" me (in their facial expressions, or topics they avoid discussing, or comments that "acknowledge" how hard it is to make it in silicon valley) in the assumption that I'm struggling because I took a bike to work before the pandemic, don't have a car, and sometimes walk to get my groceries - and, god forbid, sweat in the summer(!) If only they knew that I'm all good, saving and investing a ton and not beneath anyone lol. People make all kinds of assumptions based on what they see

Just discovered your channel! Totally agree with the new car assessment. Buy a 1-2 year old pre-owned lease from a certified dealership. Usually you can get a higher quality car (less than 10K miles) for less money compared to the current year's basic model. Plus, you may also be able to buy the remaining warranty. Keep up the maintenance and ride it until the wheels fall off.

Nice video! As I started changing my behavior on our journey to FIRE. Friends started asking why do you drive a 15 year old car? How are you able to live with 1 income? I found that questions could answer themselves. Living below your means is the way to change your life. It is sad to hear from friends that make 200k+ that say they spend first and then save what’s left without budgeting. For success, every dollar must have a purpose. I found that budgeting empowers me to know how much closer I am getting to our goals include savings, investment or funding a vacation. Keeping up with others also sheds light of people emotional problems. You must feel confident and happy with yourself. Others should not dictate life choices. Great work on this video!!

OK... I've always thought of "budget" as a four-letter word. In an effort to lower/be more aware of my spending, I gave myself a max limit of $50 at the grocery store yesterday, AND I was only allowed to buy what was ALREADY on my list. Man was that hard! It's almost instinctual (at this point in my life) to see something, want it, and go ahead and get it. I had to keep stopping myself, and reminding myself "Just what's on the list. Just what's on the list." I think because it was food/toiletries/necessities I never saw it as an area of spending that needed to be curbed.

"You define yourself by how people see you, when in fact you should be defining yourself by how much assets you have." I understand your point, that you shouldn't define yourself by the perception of others, but I would rephrase the second half of that - you shouldn't define yourself by your assets either! But everyone should have goals to grow their wealth and financial stability.

I was guilty of the car situation but when my lease was up in November I didn't rush out to replace the car. I'm attempting an experiment till the end of the year. I'm living car free & only using ride shares. The point of the experiment is to compare the cost of insurance, gas, & car payment to the ride share service cost. I'm also guilty of eating outside of my home 2-3x daily 7 days a week. Having to pay for a ride share or food delivery fees anytime I want to eat at a restaurant has curbed this bad money habit. I now buy groceries. I'm not certain it's the healthier option being most of it are pre-cooked options but I'm a hazard in the kitchen. Disclaimer: I am single, have no children, live in an urban area, am location independent, 100% remote (work from home) & can't cook. I realize not everyone can implement my old or new life style. I'm continue to be guilty of not having a budget. Spending my money intentionally has been one of my New Years resolutions for 3 years now. I'm determined to put on my big girl panties & start the new decade with the foundation to set myself up for longterm success. My experiment is my 1st attempt of 3 I need to implement to spend intentionally in 2020. Comparing my spending in (car free) November & December to (w/car) September & October to determine if living car free is the financially responsible option will determine how my budget should go in 2020. Similarly to a "soft opening" or "pilot". As an added bonus this 1 change address 2 areas on my list, transportation cost & the less obvious food cost. I'm not living paycheck to paycheck but I am going to have a 20% gap from my magic number in my retirement goal if I don't start investing intentionally. The first step is to figure out where my money is going & setting a budget. So here I am trying to cut cost being my income is set. Embarrassing but necessary for perspective: I work for one of the largest financial institutions in North America with business world wide & I'm a finance major. I'm feeling the SHAME. This isn't an easy task my family seems to be under the impression I'm experiencing financial hardships & no matter how I many times I tell them it's not the case the conjuncture is running rampant. I agree these glaring changes in my lifestyle are uncharacteristic (I had a car before I had a drivers license) but the lifestyle I'm attempting isn't secular for the area I live in.

I am from Poland. When I graduated, I got a job in Japan with a minimum wage of around 180,000 yen a month (less than 20 k per year). I decided to accept it to improve my Japanese language skills, even though even in Poland I could make more money. I still managed to save 5-10% of my salary. 4 years (and 2 strategic job changes) later I make over 10M yen a year (very rare in Japan to earn that amount in your 20s or even 30s) and save 70-80% of my salary. I could never understand living paycheque to paycheque and not saving. Aren`t they scared of what will happen if they lose their job or get sick and can`t work?

I think all class levels have issues with money. Broke people who should not be buying new cars because they believe they deserve a new car or say I need to feel safe so I need a new car that won’t break down and people who have little income are over extending when buying houses. Your right about top earners that tend to spend a lot more than they should but that’s not an general thing all good earners do in my opinion. I know many well off people who are financial Scrooge’s. I had to pay for a dinner for a friend who is a millionaire but did not want a meal because he did not want to pay for the side salad that was included in the meal. I know people working 2 minimum wage jobs while buying the latest iPhones, AirPods and Apple watch and drive nice new cars. This is a problem at all class levels not just big earners. We live in a society that feels entitled. I always hear people telling me that they make too little to save anything and they can’t afford to build an emergency fund (though to be honest they always seem to be in an emergency financial situation). I know they make a little but they own things you don’t absolutely need and they aren’t trying to improve their situations by adding skills to help them move into higher paying jobs. Then I get slapped with you don’t understand you do not have money issues while I see their child playing games on a premium phone while wearing premium brand cloth I remember one child even had a supreme shirt (I still hope it was a fake but it made me sigh). People think I have no idea how hard it is to live pay check to paycheck but I can say they do not know about my past. I use to be a low earner but I worked hard to improve my situation. I avoided debt unless it meant life or death (food etc). My parents never just gave me anything on a platter but they did spend the time to show me how to save and how hard work payed off. They were good role models in the financial space. I feel like I am told by many I know that I was lucky. Huh I didn’t feel lucky when I worked 3 jobs in college worked 100 hour weeks in my 20s. I also believe you surround your self with like minded, honest people who understand how to manage money, people with good morals and it will make your life so much better. Good video

I make $57,000 a year supporting 2 kids. I live in 1000 square foot ranch that is overpriced because of the school district. There is a bottom threshold where no matter how much you save, it will not help much. At most I can save $300 a month. That does very little in the long run. My retirement will fall short. Addressing stagnant wages in this country is nothing anyone is willing to talk about.

I don’t have kids but I have had so many conversations with people that say “you’ll be broke when you have kids”. I agree that insurance and food costs are gonna go up but an extra $3k a month... I don’t know about that. I’ve seen a few budgets where people share they pay between 500-1000 for camps and extracurricular for their kids and have no room for savings for retirement or college. I had to ask my mom how much my choir cost... not $500 a month. I don’t think everyone needs to pay for their kids college but I do think we all need to figure a way to pay for retirement. If you can’t cut out some stuff in your life then figure out a way to make more money. I guess I’m ready for more people, especially those making more than 100k to step up and realize that living paycheck to paycheck is not a good look when there are options.

This is a great video on living paycheck-to-paycheck. I commend you both on creating this. Can i suggest you do a video on the actual root cause of why people live P-to-P? Most people in these situations were taught (knowingly and unknowingly)how to deal with money at a young age. I struggled with properly managing money as an adult because my mother unknowingly showed me bad habits for years. Once I identified this as the problem, I started to make changes that actually stick in order to be financially healthy. In order for people to treat the symptoms of Paycheck-to-Paycheck, they must first identity the root philosophy on money and finances. Once identified, they can cure the issue. T. Harv Ecker wrote about this in his book "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind" have to remove the bad files before putting in the good.

Great question! We'll have to do a video to show you how we save. But what we've learned is that we are better off not making big grocery runs when we shop for food. Instead we buy 3 or 4 days of dinners and lunches and snacks. This way we don't waste food. We try to focus on efficient eating. It also helps us eat healthier. Thanks for the question and suggestion for a future video!

I knew people that had hundreds of thousands of dollars in savings and died suddenly before retiring after a lifetime of depriving themselves of living fully so they could retire “comfortably”. You only live once in most cultures. You work hard....enjoy it!

I really thank you for doing these videos. I am taking your advice and looking closer at my spending. Question, what is your opinions on cooperative living? I live in a co-op and pay monthly fees like a condo. Many repairs such as plumbing electricity issues etc are included in the charges. I think this has been good for me as an investor in my co-op. What is you guy's opinion on cooperative living?

I really like your channel and I have shared it with others. I think you guys have great insight and I'm just looking for your honest opinion. I'm a single mom of one little girl who is 7. My issue is whether or not to buy a house. Yes I currently have debt. Unfortunately a lot of student loan debt, probably $80,000. I also have a few small credit cards and a vehicle that I owe somewhere about $9,000. (I'm currently at work so I don't have exact numbers in front of me). Things are a struggle but not terrible. I'm currently renting but would really like to purchase a small home because every year the amount they up my rent is getting out of hand. I'm finish up 6 yrs in my apartment and they are talking about uping my rent another $80 a month. I've already been pre-approved for a home but in order for me to buy I have to borrow some money from family. I have down payment but I need help with closing. Many people say renting is cheaper but I'm not at a point where this isn't the truth. Would you borrow the remaining amount from family, because my lease is almost up, and buy or would you stay renting?
