If he had to go out scouting in the morning every day himself I could understand him not bothering after a while, but what actually happened here? Was he annoyed by the scouts having nothing to report? It's not even like a tactical game where clicking the button every turn becomes annoying. He could have delegated the task of debriefing the scouts to any of his officers and called it a day.

Caesar was a far more cautious general. His setbacks were mostly due to lack of training of particular units, orders not getting through, or unpredictable external conditions like weather etc. Not himself not taking extra precautions.

Alexander and Varus made the same mistake, but it was diiferent. Varus was led to an ambush by his comrade and made more horrible mistakes Alexander did. Varus was ambushed once yet refused to send scouts again, he forced his way stupidly rather than retreat back. another thing was Varus was a tyrant which fueled the suebian's hate. If you compare Varus to Alexander, I would say Alexander is worlds apart from Varus.

zildjian red corpin The great lesson here is don't go fucking around in enemy territory without using your scouts. The second lesson is keep your cool if you're ever in an ambush and think outside the box. A little courage goes a long way. Alexander got ambushed keep his cool and out thinked the enemy, Caesar got ambushed on multiple occasions and did the same, as well as Ramses II of Egypt who got ambushed at Kadesh like a fool but fought his way out like a fucking badass!

To those that says Alexander lost, well he did not. Quite the contrary actually, Alexander's army was sloppy in the pathways, and Alexander being a genius commander realized this, so he ordered a general retreat in order to rest his troops, he just paused the battle basically because he's smart. Few days later he discovered a way, fought the same enemy and won the battle in the end.
@FreedomFighter08

Some historians say that this engagement cost Alexander his greatest losses during his campaign to conquer Persia and that the Battle of the Persian Gate was the most serious challenge to Alexander's conquest of Persia. Youtab, the sister of Ariobarzanes, fought alongside her brother in the battle and became symbols of persian patriotism. The persians fought valiantly to the death without surrendering and Ariobarzanes held the pass for a month inflicting heaevy casualties, you sir is a hero, the equivalent of Leonidas to the iranians and your mighty statue the Ariobarzan statue stands tall to this day in Iran. Iran's greatest poet, Ferdowsi who wrote the Book of Kings (Shahnameh) described Ariobarzanes's last words to Alexander in beautiful poetry which I will struggle to translate below: 'Know this Alexander That after my death You may be able to conquer the Persian gates You may be able to put on the Persian crown and sit on the Persian throne But do not become arrogant for Iran will rear many more like me' Since the 1979 Islamic revolution however, the Islamic Republic has been hell bent on its anti-Iranian agenda. The regime fears all symbols of pre-Islamic Iran. Quitre recently, this anti-Iranian agenda has manifested itself in removing wall paintings that depicted the Epic stories of Shahnameh (Book of Kings) in Mashad, the removal of the statues of another Iranian legendary figure, Arash in Sari and now they want to remove the statue of Ariobarzanes in Yassuj. The Revolutionary Guards, Commander of the province, Avaz Shahabifar and the local general prosecutor, Hojatol-Islam Moussavipour have claimed the statue of Ariobarzanes in Yassuj is an insult to the Islamic values and our war martyrs.

Sarvanash Ramayanavish Battles do not always last just a day and are not always won by their first engagements. Take for example the Battle of Gettysburg or almost any battle durning the First World War. Owing to this, their country has never been conquered by any foreign king: for all other nations dread the overwhelming number and strength of these animals. Thus Alexander the Macedonian, after conquering all Asia, did not make war upon the Gangaridai, as he did on all others; for when he had arrived with all his troops at the river Ganges, he abandoned as hopeless an invasion of the Gangaridai when he learned that they possessed four thousand elephants well trained and equipped for war." - Megasthenes, Indika[30] He abandoned his campaign against the Nanda Empire and bowed in failure to Emperor Dhana Nanda by retreating. At Thermopylae the Greek army was about 10,000 and the Persian Empire had closer to 300,000 (though many were still arriving). The Persians suffered huge soldier and morale losses while most of the Greek force retreated (to later join their big army of 100.000 that would eventually crush the Persians. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Plataea) and morale was pretty high (after seeing how weak the Persian soldiers were comparatively). Alexander only had 14,000 troops (and another 2 armies (and navy) going another routes) and he faced an elite force of at least 5000 Persians and probably 20,000-40,000 more troops (less elite) from the Capital. He didn't lose half his army in sending stupid waves after wave like Persians did at Thermopylae. He was ambushed once, the Persians were not ambushed at Thermopylae. Alexander eventually enveloped the Persian army and crushed it. The Capital fell without a fight (one story says they didn't even let the Persian General retreat inside the City gates and left him outside to die, so as not to cause Alexander to siege and plunder their city). There are tons of differences. There was also a naval battle at the same days: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Artemisium The Persian navy was huge even after half of it was sunk in storms earlier. The total numbers of ships were around 300 Vs 1200 and the sailors numbered 50,000 Greeks Vs 250,000 Persians (including oarsmen, the heavier armed marines were about 10% Vs 20%).

I'm a history nut (especially for Classical Antiquity), and I knew NOTHING about Alexander the Great until you guys started to cover him in your videos. Absolutely fascinating! Not only was his accomplishments unprecedented at the time, it's STILL unprecedented TODAY! The only other generals in history who COME CLOSE to what Alexander did are Hannibal Barca, Julius Caesar and Napoleon Bonaparte. Alexander definitely tops all of them in regards to his accomplishments, but if I'm being honest, Julius Caesar is the better general.

The other version is that ARIOBARZANES and his warrior sister Noblewoman YOUTAB, managed to fight their way out of the trap KING ALEXANDER the GREAT had sprung on them and successfully retreated to PERSEPOLIS. But they were betrayed again, this time by the Treasurer of PERSEPOLIS - TRIDATES, who feeling all was lost and hoping to save PERSEPOLIS from destruction, refused to open the gates to let ARIOBARZANES and YOUTAB into the city. ALEXANDER the GREAT caught up with them and both ARIOBARNZANES and YOUTAB heroically went down fighting to their last breath ! A few months later, KING ALEXANDER after plundering PERSEPOLIS of all it's vast wealth, put the city to the torch !

I wonder why the Persian commander did not attempt to cut off the Macedonian path of retreat? It's probably harder than it sounds but could have led to a greater success. I assume there were good reasons why it couldn't be done.
@perrycarters3113
@perrycarters3113 6 жыл бұрын
Likely troop count. If he focused more heavily on the Grecian rear, it would mean reducing his numbers, and thus the pressure on Alexander's forces, in other areas. The Greeks were numerically superior and seriously battle-hardened; allowing them any opportunity to form proper battle lines would have resulted in heavier Persian losses. Thus, spreading out his troops to inflict maximum casualties on Alexander's forces was a smart move. By forming a heavier concentration of units in the Grecian rear, the middle and vanguard would have had a chance to form ranks, and Darius' defeats made it clear that the Greeks could defeat the Persians in regular battle. If you meant setting an environmental trap to cut off the Grecian retreat, he likely didn't have adequate time or manpower to do so. Also, if the Greeks noticed higher Persian activity earlier on the mountain path, they may have done proper scouting or not have advanced further, which would have ruined any chance at ambush regardless.

@@perrycarters3113 Not quite. Darius wasn't defeated by the enemy, he was betrayed by 2 of his generals, otherwise Alexander's victories were Pyrrhic at best. Also, don't underestimate Darius III's decisions. He had at least 2 decades more of military experience than Alexander.

@@CrucisJon well, what you read are mostly Greco Roman lies. Nabarzanes and Bessus (and multiple others betrayed Darius in battle. There's no way a battle hardened Achaemenid was outsmarted by one cocky Greek just because Greek sources said so. That's impossible. The Astronomical Diaries are closer events than anything written by conflicts of interest cesspools like Arrian, Plutarch or Diodorus or Livius and they indicate that the Persians not only defeated Alexander 3 times, but that in Gaugamela, Darius was abandoned while he kept continuing fighting, an orchestrated act of treason to gain power for themselves.

@@saeedvazirian Hello bro, it's been a long time since the last comment. How are you doing ? I understood that Darius was betrayed, but only later when he lost the battle of Gaugamela. I would love to know which source you are mentioning. So far the sources that I am considering as of the moment is from the Greeks and I must agree there can be some bias specially "History is writen by the victors". I used to hate the Achaemenid empire and saw them as evil conquerors but I was so wrong lol. The Ionian revolt that Athens aided is a foul move and I of course the Persians would see them as a major threat in the future. With all the Propagandas that the films saying that the Persians are evil conquerors & barbarians , depicting them as lawless power hungry nation based on the my history professors during high-school years ago and Spartans are portrayed as Freedom fighters and heroes who stopped the threat from slavery from the Persian empire. But the Spartans themselves treat their slaves the worse. I would highly appreciate if you could share me the sources you mentioned and I have to admit I love Alexander the great, but all the credits are given to him of course, but I haven't seen the point of view of the Persians. After watching all of these videos on Alexander, it seems to me that the quality of his troops and the gulf of military technology between the Persians and Macedonians was the deciding factor in his campaigns, not necessarily his genius. Although I wouldn't call him a slacker in the tactics/strategy department, there are moments where it appears that Alexander is triumphing purely through brute force, especially at Issus. And here at the Persian Gates he walks right into an ambush. I think Phillip II deserves more of the credit for creating a military machine that was literally unprecedented and essentially unbeatable; the Persians just didn't seem to have an answer to Macedonian tactics. Just a thought.

As we know persia loses only 2 of battles against Greece's in almost 250 years during the Greece persian wars, its said there have been 30 battles between these two nations and persia was almost undefeateble for Greece! Alexander's skills + good timing + support from local Persians+ persian rebellions inside, all led to the conquest. If Alexander were alone in this it was more like a myth than a history.

Can you imagine what it must have been like just trying to keep up with Alexander? No fighting, just trying to have your shit together always moving. Over coming the most difficult challenges EVERY DAY! If I can't take a quiet dump and have a couple of cups of coffee every morning my day is shot, much less hand to hand combat to the death around each corner. ... Gezzz

The Macedonians, Greeks, Illyrians and Thracians were better soldiers than the Persians. This battle along with several others, such as the battle of Issus proves this. Even when the enemy used the high ground or a river against them and utilized better tactics, the Macedonians won. When the Macedonians combined superior soldiers with superior tactics in a combined-arms approach they way they did at Gaugamela, it was a walk in the park.

If you want to mention Macedonians and Greeks seperately then you should refer to every Greek city state seperately.

There is no point on seperating Macedonians from Greeks. It is like saying Spartans, Greeks, Illyrians etc

Ok mate. We are a bit suspicious because of our neighbour Skopje/Fyrom/"Macedonia". So, it is not the best thing anymore to see Macedonians and Greeks written seperately. Unless it is something like " Macedonians and THE REST of the Greeks" :)

They were a bit different ethnicity than rest of the Greeks (but this topic is heavily depated on). Culturarily they were Greek.

I get that. It was in fact what I suspected. The people living in FYROM are not Macedonians, they are Slavic and it's not even located in Macedonia but Paeonia as this picture clearly illustrates. I'm on your page, mate. This is in fact one of the more ridiculous deliberate lies in the 20th and 21st century. upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/e/eb/Macedonia_overview.svg/1200px-Macedonia_overview.svg.png
