I work as a painter and use Advance pretty often. It’s not oil based. It’s a waterborne enamel, which is a hybrid between oil and water. It has water based clean up and is low odour, but the durability is more like oil paint. Oil can only be cleaned with solvent and is a LOT stinkier. I know Advance has a smell, but it’s really not even close to a traditional oil paint. The streakiness is from doing two coats in one day. Advance needs around 8-12 hours to cure before recoating. It has unusual components in it because it’s a hybrid, so there’s solvents you don’t normally get in acrylics. These solvents reactivate components in the previous coats making the previous coats gum up. You need to spray it if you’re doing two coats in one day. I’d also sand before priming, after priming, and between your first and second coat. If you don’t believe me, read the can. It’s on the back along the top, above all the other instructions. I’m pretty sure it’s got a little clock face beside it. Finally, next time, I would have the primer tinted. A lot of people don’t realize primer can be tinted. It can’t go as rich and deep as your teal colour, but a bit darker will help.

YES! Thank you. I was wondering if research was done beforehand why there was no sanding before primer and between coats although I have seen a lot of new videos on not sanding oak so I am staying open minded. Room looks good but I want to know about durability going forward. Also the tinted primer makes a huge difference.

😉One woman's clutter is 💫heavenly practical art for another. 👩‍🍳As an avid cook & bulk buyer, I love 🤍 beautiful, generously sized apothecary for much used kitchen dry goods. 🤔Unless there's a walk-in pantry, there is ALWAYS a need for extra storage. 🍞 Bakers, cooks🫕, & entertainers🍷 alike always have a lot of related paraphernalia. Besides, you don't do your prep work or assembly UNDER the upper cabinets anyway. 🤗 It's a perfectly pleasing & functional space for all the necessary activities. 💚 Bridget from Cali☘️ (using my pal's YT acct)

I'm actually a little conflicted on this one: loved the end result BUT the peel-and-stick tile was just not it, it looked like you could tell it was stickers. Also thought the fridge sticker was way too prominent and it distracted from the rest of that beautiful kitchen. Lastly: I wonder where all the things from her counter went? Like the coffee machine etc? Wouldn't she need those things regularly?
@MaryAnneAchieng
@MaryAnneAchieng 3 жыл бұрын
I agree. I think the fridge sticker would've been less in-your-face if the backslash was just white and not the patterned tile, but it's pretty busy in that small space. I suspect the other appliances were taken out for final shots, but I'd have loved to see how she incorporated them into the small space. I think the 3 day limit definitely factored into the design choices

I think it would have looked better and been more forgiving if she had used large subway style tiles. Peel and stick is not my favourite but I think in the smaller tiles you can see the seems as the grout lines were thicker where she had joined sheets together

I generally think you do such a great job with peel and stick but this time they looks sloppy. I think the small tiles made it harder for sure, and you were probably in a rush to get it done in time. I think it’s how tiny the tiles are, so more fake “grout” lines to try and line up exactly. The subway tile (like the kind she has in her kitchen) is more forgiving I think because you have less grout lines to line up and try and lay over.

My primary take away - take the time to do it right. If that means adding a few days to the job, that's what it means. There isn't anything "wrong" with the design choices but even Alexandra spoke of making choices for time not money or preference. LOVE LOVE LOVE the colour scheme in this makeover. I pretty much like it all, but wish the finish looked a little smoother on the cabinet doors and the tile was not as 'gappy' even just a minute amount shows unfortunately. Its just the finer detail that lets this otherwise amazing makeover down. I'm planning to have mine done, but sending them off to be sprayed by professionals. I hope my comments come across as constructive and not mean. Xx

Good on you for going outside your comfort zone! Love the finished look. Tips for painting cabinets if you can't spray (which is ideal): 1) sand with a really fine grit sandpaper (220 or 300) between coats and 2) use a mini roller to backroll after painting with a paintbrush, this will help you eliminate the streakiness of the paint.

It came out well anyways. I mean she took three days to make that, in three people. We are not counting the prep and online browsing for products. But once you have everything making it over in three days is good for everyone. Why is it unfair for the people offering their space?
@marissal9707

@@tizgelmi well, with speeding up a project, usually corners have to be cut, like prep. The paint needed more time to cure, I'm guessing none of the space was prepped with cleaning, sanding, etc. I saw paint spots on the floor from where paint was dropped...you might not be able to see the details, but the person that volunteered their space has to live with a poorly executed job that was rushed. I'd love to have her go back after the person has lived with the space for a few months to see how well it kept up. I'm betting that won't happen tho.

I really love what you did with this kitchen! The before and after is literally crazy. You would never know what the kitchen looked like before. But I also share the thoughts of some people here in the comments that some of the finishes were just not on point. But I want to say that you had to work in a tiny apartment, the owners did not make any room for you, you had a small amount of time and the viewers should take this into account. Almost anything that was criticized in the comments can still easily be fixed by the owners. Like give the cabinets another coat if they feel like it is necessary, seal them, make more room on the countertop as well. (Taking into account that they might not even care because the transformation is everything.) I think Team AG did an amazing job!

Such an awesome makeover AG! As someone who has undertaken the kitchen cabinet painting makeover, it is definitely a commitment haha! (And curious cats going in cupboards make it more difficult). But I do have a suggestion for anyone else planning on doing this - top coat! The scratches and spills etc on the paint show and I wish I had done a clear sealer or top coat on my cabinet doors to protect them.

Am I the only one who thinks the old tiles went rather well with the new paint color for the cabinets? Covering that bit of extra tile at the bottom of course. I didn't care for the refrigerator covering; too busy for me. Painting cabinets is really tricky and the tip about adding tint to the primer is right on. Our housepainter did that for our exterior paint job. Loved the sink and new light choice.

I absolutely love the cabinets, but until the very end I was sceptical because I felt like it needed another softer, warm colour to counter them. But with the dried goods and the towel it has that and it looks so good. The first thing when I started the video that came to my mind was that I would keep the backsplash if it were my kitchen. I love the colours and it's so different and rustic and I'd love it with a rustic eclectic maximalist style. But I'm sure that that's not what the owner would have wanted at all, she said she wanted it modern and airy and you accomplished that so well!! it really looks so so good and clean and suddenly like there's more space. I love the bold cabinets, but I think it needed that warm touch of a less prominent different colour. You completely transformed this space and made it unrecognisable and it looks a million times better now.

Okay, some of the comments need to lighten up. Alexandra doesn't claim she is a professional interior designer. She is doing renter friendly makeovers with small budgets and little time. Renter friendly means you may not be able to caulk the tile without ruining it when the renter needs to leave everything in original condition. Danielle, below, experienced in using Advance so often, is able to shed light on the paint and how it works but not everyone may be as experienced as she is with the paint. The overall look and feel is stunning. Love the integration of design elements and colors ie towels with cabinet/drawer pulls, fridge, light fixture, faucet and the very white stove.The cabinet color is beautiful. Great job team AG!

I do love the overall design and colors, I love how Alexandra is pushing for more complicated tasks like this one, the content feels new and a change from the usual, which is fun to watch. I don't like how the peel-and-stick tales look though, since they were running to finish on time I think you can tell where one sticker ends and where the other starts, and it bothers my OCD so much. But is a good learning experience that the smaller tile designs are trickier and if you don't have time or experience, it may be better to get a design with bigger tiles like the pink ones in her kitchen. But since they are so easy to peel off I think it's something easy to fix.

Hey, love the changes! Tip: a better filler product to use is Bondo, especially on laminate casework. It dries a lot faster than putty, is easy to sand, and can adhere to lots of surfaces (laminate, wood, metal, etc). I'm a commercial interior designer, and I've remodeled just about every room in my 1980s house.
