My wife picks up her 10/22 target today so good to know the CCI Standards are a good place to get it dialled in. If it can group like my TC R55 Benchmark does with cheap Geco semi auto ammo she'll be very happy! Thanks for making the video.

...using one ammo, I found the stock bolt torque setting made more difference than the ammo in this test. 4 shot groups @100 yards went from 3/4" to 21/2" between 17"/lbs up to 27"/lbs. Something to do with barrel harmonics apparently....

Very interesting and makes a lot of sense. I have to add that barrel length and the barrel rifling make a huge difference in guns(much more obvious than your observation).

Thanks for doing that man. I just bought (overpaid) for a box of the green tag to do the same comparison to the std velocity. I'm anxious to see my results for comparison to yours in my 10/22.

Hi Goat Mumbler, those groups were done pretty much right out the box, later after this video I free-floated the barrel and bedded the action. it definitely made a difference. id suggest doing that to see your groups shrink. nd yeah those green tags are way overpriced. thanks for watching!

One of the interesting things I learned getting into rim fires is that all my guns hate green tag. Standard nearly always shoots well though. High velocity stuff rarely shoots well, meaning good groups. Mini mags are accurate enough for most hunting uses. Stingers less so.

For testing outdoors at or slightly below freezing I think your results are quite good for the standard velocity ammo. The MiniMag HP seemed to do okay at 100m compared to 50m. I think you might find the MiniMag 40gr would do better still. I like that you use 10 shot groups and verify results with a second 10 shot group. Ammo quality testing is a game of statistics. 3 or 5 shot groups that some use for RF ammo mean NOTHING! I think you are shooting rather quickly (which makes sense in changing conditions like swirling wind) and if you work on making your hold on target, pressure on the stock, trigger pull in stages to a surprise release and a clean follow through consistent, you would improve your group size by a third. However, your results were very representative of quality ammo your rifle likes. I suggest repeating the test at typical summer temperatures and see if things change at all.

Great review! You just confirmed that my choice of CCI Standard is the best. It’s all I shoot through both my rifles and pistols… It was the first ammo I tried and has never given me any problems. I just wish 22 lr ammo overall shot cleaner. I’m fastidious about keeping my firearms clean.. and that greatly affects my accuracy. Watching your review had me wondering if you’d cleaned your gun before starting the test. The only improvement that I could see to your test (obviously with a freshly cleaned and warmed up barrel) would be to repeat the test with your rifle locked down in something like a Ransom rest and trigger pulls being achieved mechanically….

A few days ago I went out to my local shooting shooting range to test out the new (el-cheapo) scope I got for my my very nice Savage 64F. I tested CCI standard velocity, CCI 710 FPS subs and then some random other super sonics. The CCI standards gave me beautiful groups just like yours. All the others gave wide groups. Oh I forgot to mention this was 50m (164 feet). The CCI subs, 710fps and not yours at 10??fps were so bad that I could actually see the bullet head as it flew to the target. They dropped between 6 and 11 inches at 50 meters. Maybe that could be another video... How much a bullet drops vs its FPS. Thanks for great video. You answered my concerns 100%.

I tried some that Shoot To Kill had on a video and put electrical tape around the barrel couple inches back from end of stock. Not sure what the science behind it is but it worked, enough that I decided against changing the barrel to a Shaw. Thanks for your info.

nice review! I've been using standard CCI in my anchutz bolt action rifle and sig 522 with the same result as yours. Tried using ellice, federal and armscor and almost same result. as long as you don't exceed 1070 fps, you'll have a grouping of 1 1/2 of an inch at 100 meters. More so if you have a suppressor.

Where did you find the CCI Green? The CCI bullets nominal diameter is perfect for the 597 that I use for CRPS/ORPS and small game at range. Like any rifle they are going to prefer their specific ammo. I like how consistent CCI keeps their powder charge, I can get .5MOA groups with 40gr Mini Mags @50 and 1.5MOA groups @100 with 40gr Standards (zero wind), but every rifle is different, even when comparing identical rifles.

CCI Standard Velocity is my most accurate ammo that I buy out of about 8-10 types as well. Still it depends on the gun but realistically speaking if you have to set your gun up for an ammo type it's best to buy that ammo exclusively since each ammo type groups in a different location on the target based on speed and weight and barrel and whatever else I forgot.

Cci standard velocity does consistent ½ inch groups for my ruger volquartsen kidd hybrid target charger 10/22 at 100meters. For a Custom Bolt re worked and highly modified Marlin 880ss, match chambered rebarreled 12.5 inch Bull with a Jard re worked trigger groups are ¾ of an inch at best at 100meters with some work as the stock is the synthetic hunting stock so handling it when bench Shooting requires some extra care because of that flexible stock. The .22lr standard velocity though made in the early 2000s packed in those hard cases are very accurate and consistent on a lot of our rimfire rigs compared to the ones manufactured as of recent. We still have around 10,000 plus rounds of the old stuff that are used for precision long range rimfire hunts or competition target as they are more dependable for less Fliers.

The reason high and hyper velocity rounds are not so accurate at 100 is because they go through the transonic faze. I was able to squeeze out a half moa group at 100 meters with 5 rounds with my t1x and rws subs, four of the rounds were in 7.5mm, with lapua polar biathlon 30 rounds in 4cm, 20 of which were in a 3/4moa cluster. Stingers and standard velocity work for me superbly at 50 meters, but at 100 both start suffering quite a bit

Unfortunately this test does little to proof anything other than SV work better in your rifle, with maybe a little more shooting practice. For me Velocitors work the best all round in both my rifles and pistols. I like the extra weight as they are more stable over distance against breeze and hit harder. The hollow point also makes them a little longer so the BC should be better as well as the amount of projectile contact with the rifling/lands of the barrel. Anyway thanks for the the video...👍

Every gun and/or barrel likes a certain round. It's interesting to me the best grouping was with a relatively cold barrel. When the barrel warms up, it has different characteristics. I also noticed snow in the background....ambient temperature also affects accuracy (along with barrel quality, trigger quality, bolt carrier quality and shooter quality.....lol) p.s. I exclusively use CCI standard velocity.

I feel like the AR tactical is more of a marketing gimmick for a reason to charge more for the round. Ive seen many people who say the Mini mags and standard velocity feed better then the AR tactical in many different firearms. I have runs loads of mini mags through my M & P 15-22 and have not had a single ftf of fte issue. I dont see the point in paying 3 times the amount for a new round when the mini mags/ standard velocity do so well. Thats just me though.

I just got back from the range a few minutes ago, here's what's up with my marlin 60. At 50 yards i had a 1/4 inch group, if that (they were all touching), with cci minimags and not one flier out of over 150 rounds. At 50 yards I had a slightly larger group with stingers. And every once in awhile, about 1 in 5 rounds, i would get a complete random shot placement (i shot 250 stingers today, my dad shot the other 250). Consistent nickel groups, with random fliers 4 inches or so off in any direction. Left, right, up, down, didn't matter. Same for him. There was 0 wind today. We were using benches. It wasn't us, the minimags we just changed from were not doing this. If you have a marlin 60 get minimags. We had simmons 4x20 scopes. Faster isn't better.

That's a nice group for sure! Up to about 80 yards (depending on conditions) is the right distance for supersonic .22 lr ammo, past that it goes from supersonic to subsonic and the bullet is destabilized as it passes through the sound barrier. That's why the supersonic stuff in this video was less accurate than the subsonic stuff at 100 meters.

It actually is subsonic at 100 yards at about 1050 fps AND this video is actually 100 meters (110 yards). For a 10-22 with a target barrel it seems SOMETHING should group a lot better. One thing…I know when testing centerfire ammo there’s this mantra about comparing groups out of “a clean, cold barrel “ so that everything is on an even playing field and would reflect the first shots at game in a hunting situation. I know a good bull barrel is supposed to minimize that but your setup must have been hot, hot, hot the further into your testing you got. Then there’s the thing about clean. Anyway, it didn’t seem to me that the different ammunitions were giving stellar results…they were shooting equally meh level. As to your vid? Stellar, bro! Good camera, sound and presentation. Many thanks for your efforts. PS: do you buy your ammo directly from CCI’s website? Usually best price there and decent availability. Of course, “decent” in today’s world means something very different than what it used to mean.

You are using the Ruger Target version of the 10/22. It was designed for competition shooting and that’s why it shoots better with standard/Green Tag ammo. Under no circumstance should you ever use Stingers in this particular rifle. The Stinger casing is slightly longer and can damage your match grade chamber. It says this clearly in your owners manual. I have the same rifle as you and at 50 yards mine will shoot 1/2 groups all day long with Green Tag. I won’t shoot any ammo faster than 1090 through it. I have pinker rifles for high velocity fun.

Seems there are a lot of experts commenting on a guy that is trying to do you a favor. Now, groups are groups regardless of the speed of shooting etc in the comments that I see below. And, if you think one can't keep the bull of his size in the crosshairs of a Vortex 16x at 100 meters at his rate of fire you should probably turn in your comment card. The factor (variable) that is controlled across cartridges is *his shooting*. So, that variable was constant over the range of bullets he tested. During load development I can (and have) given my handload trials to another guy that shoots 1/4 moa at 250 yards and owns basically the same Axis II Predator 6.5mm CM HB--He has much better glass; that's why he shoots better at that distance. He'll always come up with smaller groups, but the **most accurate loads** (grains of powder) will be the same between what he shoots and what I shoot. That fact that isn't emphasized here is that when the hypersonics go subsonic (in front of the target...do your external ballistics...) they always go unstable. So, not surprising that the hypersonics lose here. However, one .22 cartridge that consistently surprises me is the Blazer, and that wasn't compared here. That one breaks several of the so-called rules in my REM 581. A similar sort of external ballistic effect is observed in high velocity bullets, where the tip of the bullet heats up during flight and cause unpredictable alterations in the BC...That's why Hornady developed the polymer tip in the ELDs, and that's why I use them. The bottom line is that there is more to accuracy than velocity...especially when your shooting a 40 grain piece of crap bullet that has been bashed up more than a '56 Dodge pickup truck, shoved in a small soft brass case, and then coated with wax to make it work in the barrel. Ya just have to test them however you can.

You might see my comment on the main list. I am trying to build myself an awesome little 22 sniper rifle. No rodent in my area will be safe when Big Brian is around :) Anyway I did like the video because it answered many of my questions I had. You brought up a new question. Reloading? Is is worth it to reload a 22? It would be fun. I just shoot so many it would be a huge time commitment and wife would probably come at you with a rolled up news paper for suggesting it. So basically in your opinion is the CCI standard velocity and Blazer on par with or better?

One thing I see is that it is cold outside or so I'm led to believe by the snow. This might explain some of the inconsistency. Living in North Louisiana where snow is relatively rare, temps in the early fall are generally in the 70's and hardly ever stay below freezing all day in the coldest weather. I will say, I was disappointed in overall accuracy of the test, but then again I wasn't there to shoot groups with my rifle. I'll have to set up and shoot some (been wanting to anyway). 2 minutes is very good accuracy for non-match ammo. Doesn't happen all that often with standard production rifles, IME. A little Lapua Biathlon as a reference load would have been interesting.

Hi Ed thanks for the feedback yes back then i had a bit less experience, and in the warmer weather the rimfires do tend to group a bit better. at some point likely i will do a match ammo comparisson.

Wow. Arm chair warriors unite. lol Don’t mind the guys giving you a hard time. I liked and subscribed There is value in all data. 110 yards I’d expect 2” group or less from whichever ammo your gun favours. I have no custom or expensive rimfires but my hunting/ bang around 22s and 22mag shoot about 3/4 to 1” groups at 50. I’ll search your content for some Eley reviews?

Depends on the individual gun. I have one that shoots extremely well - one hole groups at 50 yards. All I have changed is the trigger. There are expensive bolt guns that can’t do that. I have built 10/22s that print 50 yard groups that start with 0.0... with the right ammo.

Hi EuropaWill, Dry firing doesn't negatively affect anything anymore, on much older firearms where firing pins might have been made of more brittle metal that was an issue. with new guns your good

brother, it's nt my place to second guess you, i give you credit for the effort and the vid. id just like to ask how much you have in that rifle, including the bull barrel. then id like to suggest that if you can get hold of a stock marlin model 60, scope it, sight it in, do the same test with the same ammo except with the marlin, and i'd like to see the results of that

Interesting results... EVERY gun is different... my results in a standard barrel ruger 10/22 are vastly different from your's... I'm a velocitor guy... they hold the tightest groups out of my gun... around 2 to 2.5 at 100 yards... which i am pleased with... usually only takes 2 to 3 shots to clip a shot gun hull @100... great review... but what people need to understand is every gun pukes ammo out differently.

My experience with CCI ammo of late has been lack luster at best. When I ran out of 20 year old standard velocity which shot great in my arsenal of 22 rifles. I was extremely disappointed with current standard velocity. And it's not just me, I shoot with a group of target shooters who's experience is similar. We have all gone too Aquila standard velocity extra for better plinking/target accuracy. When my supply of 30 year old green tag is exhausted I will be leaving the CCI ammo behind, barring some return to quality control. I have witnessed CCI go from the standard the Industry was judged by, To something less of late. I realize money must be made, but it looks like maintenance and calibration of the loading equipment is not what it once was. I sincerely hope that the good product of the past does not only live in the past forever. Your product is slipping ln quality CCI and you need to fix it before its too late.

I like accurate rifles out of the box therefore, I have Marlins. XT 22, 795, and a couple of model 60's. Only 10/22 I've ever seen that could shoot with a 160 dollar marlin model 60 was a 700 dollar custom built 10/22. And even then, it couldn't out shoot my 220 dollar xt22. Guess I'll stick with marlin. Or, just maybe, now that ruger has bought marlin, you will soon be able to get a 10/22 with a micro grove barrel. How cool would that be. Thanks for the video. Stay Safe and GOD Bless 🙏🕊🦅🇺🇸

10/22 are not accurate by any means, they shoot patterns like a shot gun not groups. My Rem 597 shoots so much better, if your checking accuracy of a given ammo use a fire arm which is known for accuracy, I my Rem 597 is very accurate for semi auto but if your accuracy testing use a known accurate bolt gun such as anchutz. The ammo is unable to be accurate when shot through a known in accurate gun. I was never impressed with the 10/22 for Target or hunting but it does go bang so it appears that's good enough for some.

Hi Cool hand, thanks for watching. these groups may not be 100% representational of the true potential of the Ruger 1022 as in this video the action was not bedded (it was left as it was from the factory. I personally have sold this 1022 mostly because i was tired of continuously cleaning the action and trigger assembly. the only purpose of the video was to represent which ammo tends to work best and get the least variation in accuracy/group size.

@terrybailey4600
@terrybailey4600 Жыл бұрын
Paper shooters find that the "sub sonic" ammo usually wins. Why? Because the bullet doesn't have to deal with the turbulence created by sonic speeds. Hunters find that 40 grain high velocity usually wins...because they are looking for the most ethical shots, ammo that includes both reasonable accuracy and also effective penetration.
