Incredible video like always. My Hero Academia is definitely my favourite out of all the new gen series for Shonen Jump. I remember when I got into the series back in 2019, the series was insanely popular and one the biggest manga series around and I still love it now. I’ve always been impressed by Horikoshi’s style because it looks much softer than other artist’s works and I’ve also always been impressed with how quickly Horikoshi does the weekly chapters and volumes. I’ve also always loved how he takes inspiration from many Marvel and DC comics, especially Spider-Man. I actually met Justin Briner, the voice actor for Midoriya, three years ago and I’m really excited for the end of the series too.

@@alexenterprises1 It’s not the biggest spoiler, but as someone who’s just finished seeing season 2, we have no idea what happened to Maki, so seeing her there tells me she survived, it’s hard not to instinctively not put that together after just finishing the season.

I love the emphasis on drawing hands in horikoshi’s art. Most artists shy away from drawing them, but horikoshi does the opposite and actually talks about how besides the eyes, hands are the most important part of a characters body to convey their emotions. On top of this, there’s even a running theme throughout MHA of hands symbolizing connections. Great video, love to finally see a video about MHA without someone just complaining about it

Exactly. That last part is so true, every mha related video seems to be hate toward it in some way nowadays. And the hand part is real asf, as an artist I used to hate hands, but I've been studying Horikoshis work for about 4 years now, safe to say I can draw hands, but not only that, I enjoy drawing them.

As an artist, the technical skills of Horikoshi feels like they have been undervalued by the wider community. Most understand that the picture look nice but don’t understand how fucking insane it is in terms of the fundamental. Horikoshi’s perfect stylization and understanding of the fundamentals feels like something so out of the norm of the other weekly shonen series running right now.

Horikoshi is my favorite mangaka of all time. His art style clicks with me so much, and I really hope that after MHA ends, that he comes back with a new manga that's not restrained by the weekly grind. Either monthly or an irregular schedule like Sui Ishida's Choujin X; anything that'll benefit his health and allow him to grow more as an artist.

It's always so clear how Hori stands out as soon as he adds a Deku on a shonen jump magazine cover amongst all the other characters. OP is always first, but Deku is also always so vibrantly positioned in the bg your eyes go there first. He's really carved out his place in manga history

I wish you had touched, as well, on the other thing he mentioned he wished he'd known more about at the start: human emotions. A lot of the characters in early My Hero Academia definitely felt like caricatures in not just visual style, but personality as well. Over time, you see Horikoshi exploring more complex stories with those characters' emotions and inner lives, and that comes out in the art, as well. The emotional complexity Horikoshi is able to portray and the amount of attention he gives to what each character is feeling is something that's even more underrated than his grasp on action scenes and perspective, in my opinion. Personally, it's the emotional nuance and payoffs to character arcs that draw me to HeroAca more than anything else. In particular, the way he developed Toga from a very stereotypical yandere to a much more complex and tragic character is my favorite thing about HeroAca. Other than that, I think people really underappreciate Horikoshi's grasp on anatomy. His art style is very stylized, but always grounded in a very strong understanding of the human body. It makes the injuries characters suffer believable and visceral, lends itself to one-of-a-kind character designs, and allows him to put out horrifying imagery that dedicated horror manga stand to learn from. I was very excited to see that Horikoshi stated in an interview that he's considering writing a horror manga next, because it feels like he has this immense prowess with that which only arose unexpectedly while he was making My Hero Academia. As much as I love My Hero Academia, I am thrilled beyond words to see what Horikoshi makes next. You can really feel that as an artist, author, and person in general, Horikoshi grew into a level of confidence and competency that's leagues apart from where his career started. It's heartbreaking to go back and see the all-consuming self-doubt he struggled with, on top of the frequent health issues. Through it all, though, it feels like he found himself in his art, and his art grew meteorically along with him. Stuff like that inspires me like nothing else.

This! People tend to overlook Horikoshi's artistic skills because of the inphamy My Hero Academia got during the years because of its fandom, but he is actually one the best mangakas of our recent times. Seeing for example the panel in which Overhaul stretches his arm in the foreground as if he is reaching the viewer with the spaces between his fingers becoming little windows in which the page show other fragments of the scene is seriously terrific composition and dynamism

Which is crazy to say considering how popular it is. It’s so unfortunate ppl can’t see the series for what is and not be able to avoid comparing it to other series. Doesn’t help also that the fandom and anime has skewed a lot of ppl’s perception of the series. Hopefully the day comes when the animanga community can look back and appreciate the story Horikoshi was trying to tell.

Horikoshi, ever since I started watching/reading MHA around 8 years ago, (time flies) has inspired me as an artist. The way he draws everything so angularly while also getting the sense of depth and realism in there, the way he draws hands with such skill and freedom, the way his characters and designs are so impressive (and kinda extremely complex to draw) and the way he wears his inspiration on his sleeves, it all enamored me and made me want to draw even more. I like more realistic works like Vagabond or Parasyte or Berserk. But there's something about Horikoshi's style that just gets me hyped every time I look at it. The school festival arc volume cover is a good example of this. (Vol 20) just look at that cover and tell me it doesn't look sick asf.

@@omegashark1837 I mean in the sense that ppl were divisive on Naruto, his fanbase, and it’s final war arc, but once the series was over, a lot of its detractors and fans looked back and grew to enjoy it as a complete and finished work. Now there’s more videos going over the themes and characters and impact Naruto has had than the hate surrounding it.

@@johnoguntuase1162100% on the read vs watch thing but it's not exactly the fandom's fault, it's the people who overhate because they struggle with non-overt storytelling and lack of cultural context where it's important. mha's fandom weirdos are genuinely no different to any other fandom, except there's more homophobes thanks to hori intentionally making a more progressive setting than western audiences tolerate. the real issue is that hori writes in much subtler ways than most shounen utilizes and as a result, people think he's either missing big themes or makes no sense. in reality his writing is incredible, but getting people who already decided their casual anime experience was enough evidence to listen to better explanations is damn near impossible. hating is a professional sport for most of the animanga community lmfao, and they're gonna target the lowest common denominator which is whatever storyline the least of them can comprehend - a nuanced and detail oriented one. i wish western fans were more inclined to pay close attention to their foreign media and take the time to listen to native speakers on what language and cultural details they're missing. in something like mha it changes the entire story.

It should be noted that if Horikoshi wasn’t so insecure about the potentiality of his series dying in terms of popularity then he could’ve been even greater since he would’ve been more okay with taking drawn out breaks
@huekanosedot
@huekanosedot 6 ай бұрын
that probably does factor in, but sj wouldn't permit such regular breaks for a mangaka with a weekly slot. it's not a popularity issue considering how well loved the series is worldwide (almost a 50/50 japan to global sales, kinda unheard of), it's just that he's likely obligated to keep up with the weekly slot as best as possible and they don't really care about mangakas' health if they're still drawing. i sincerely wish he could/would post biweekly because every time he gets a break he blows my fkn mind with art quality, paneling choices and writing
