@@AutumnOnFire I don't really know actually. Maybe it's because I've only ever played games that were in 3rd person ever since I started gaming at like age 5 or whatever. And so when I actually got to play a first-person game I was so used to seeing my character that it felt oddly...disconnected to play AS the character? That same feeling carries over even now, it always feels somewhat disconnected to me, to play in first-person. Also with respect to shooters I can't aim worth shit, I take ages to land a single shot. So I guess it's just not my cup of tea. DOOM reeled me in with the soundtrack and I eventually fell in love with the game!

This game won soundtrack of the year. With good reason. Mick Gordon said that games usually have music that emphasize where a player is but not what a player is doing. DOOM has encounters where the music starts slower, softly building and as you start killing demons it eventually turns into full blown audio rage.

@@Itwasjustified Actually, Need for Speed 3 had this progressive soundtrack thing and it released 4 years before Serious Sam: TSE. If I remember right NFS3 also had two different soundtracks to choose from; electronic and rock. It was far from perfect though. If you drove too fast it had the tendency to completely break the pacing of those songs. I've spent way too many hours driving in Empire City just because I loved its heavy metal soundtrack.

In the first age, in the first battle, when the shadows first lengthened, one stood. Burned by the embers of Armageddon, his soul blistered by the fires of Hell and tainted beyond ascension, he chose the path of perpetual torment. In his ravenous hatred he found no peace; and with boiling blood he scoured the Umbral Plains seeking vengeance against the dark lords who had wronged him. He wore the crown of the Night Sentinels, and those that tasted the bite of his sword named him... the Doom Slayer.

There’s a talk by the composer Mick Gordon in the GDC here on KZfaq where he really geeks out explaining how he got that sound and guitar tone. Basically, he came up with the idea that, since the theme of DooM is demons and corrupted energy and all that, he’d try starting with a very simple and pure sound, a sine wave, and passing it through several chains of different devices: pedals, splitters, feedback loops, tape recorders and filters, but overloading them and distorting the signal so much that the circuitry started to generate all sorts of artifacts and strange sounds in the signal and made it all sound really different and brutal. Also the chainsaw guitar as others have pointed out, he didn’t want to use just a normal guitar tone no matter how heavy it might sound, so he had the idea to use a plugin called Morph that creates sounds by combining certain characteristics from two different source sounds, in this case a guitar and the chainsaw sound from the original Doom. Alex, you have no idea how pumping it is to kill digital demons while BFG Division plays in the background and it dynamically gets more intense the more aggresively you play. You should check it out.

The music in DOOM 2016 actually gets dynamically re-mixed in-game in response to how many enemies you're fighting, how low your health is, &c. The "up and down" you mentioned - if you get into an intense fight, it plays the "ups," while the "downs" are for lulls in the combat. No matter how you play the game, it will always perfectly fit the pace of the music, turning gameplay into a bloody, shotgun-wielding dance to this killer soundtrack! This track - particularly the part around 7:20 - actually uses the same melody as a song from the original 1993 DOOM called _Waltz of the Demons,_ but it's a very different arrangement. The original DOOM had a lot more atmospheric tracks as well as metal, and the 1993 version of this track sounded more like Camille Saint-Saens' _Danse Macabre._

Fun fact this song and all others from these soundtracks (aside from the menu themes) are made to be randomized as you play the game, so for example you kill a demon in a rly badass way and the song goes into a heavy breakdown, and its honestly so much cooler like that in game For example in eternal, cultist base is so much heavier when i play it compared to the ost version because my playstyle is super aggressive, and the song changes to match

Fun fact: The melody tune is actually a chainsaw. Or was it his neighbors lawn mower? Well either way, on one track he uses a chan saw, and on another one he uses a lawn mower.

It's not an actual chainsaw iirc, he used the sound from the Doom 1 chainsaw and ran it through synths!

It makes you feel that powerful because of for what it was made for. It's for giving out your hate and violence into your enemies. Please stream this game, I'd love it. And even better, you can stream the original Doom (they're even better). I'm sure you will like it because of the music!

This soundtrack makes you feel like you can benchpress your fridge because this is the music that plays when you end up in an all out demonic brawl and it's there to help drive you to rip and tear your way through the horde. You need the music to sound like this, so that you can split demon skulls with your bare hands.

If you're thinking of streaming Doom, start from the beginning - Doom from 1993 and then Doom II. Really, it's going to be much better than jumping straight to the Doom 2016. It's going to be a whole new expirience, you will get all refereces (sometimes music references!). I'd love you as a doom fan!

Here is a handy dandy guide to how each character theme feels like: Find your one way (Sol): absolute 80s / 90s dad rock energy and attitude. Roar of the Spark (Ky): power metal. Epic and extremely melodic. Play the Hero (Chipp): I'm fast as fuck boiiiii Armor_clad Faith (Potemkin): slow, militaristic metal... but we no longer live in a society. Out of the Box (Axl): a chill tune befitting a chill bro. Disaster of Passion (May): memes, the DNA of the soul. Rock Parade (Anji): feels exactly like a rock parade... and an anime opening. Hellfire (Leo): sounds like unga bunga fun until you read the lyrics. What do you fight for (Nagoriyuki): samurai metal featuring economy rap Requiem (I_no): switching between chill and final boss music like it's nobody's business. Necessary Discrepancy (Ramlethal): what if Dream Theater used synths a LOT more. Love the Subhuman Self (Millia): instrumentals of Industrial Metal meet the vocals of Symphonic Metal. Let me Carve your way (Zato): OW THE EDGE. Trigger (Giovanna): Red Hot Chilli Peppers... that's it. Alone, Infection (Faust): a whole trip and a half.
