More Power + The Best Fuel Economy | Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid First Drive

It turns out that sometimes, being powered by a Prius powertrain is good. Case in point: the new Corolla Cross Hybrid shares its new eAWD hybrid system with the new Prius. Although rated for 42 MPG, we managed to average 50 MPG without trying terribly hard. Highway numbers should fall closer to 40 MPG, but any way you slice it, the new Corolla Cross Hybrid is an interesting alternative to the best-selling Crosstrek. It offers more power and significantly better fuel economy in a more boxy package.

The zero to 60 time for this Corolla Cross hybrid is impressive! Sofyan from Redline Reviews did it in 6.8 seconds! In comparison, TheTopher said it took him almost 13 seconds to do zero to 60 in the 2023 Honda HR-V!

@Steven Strain Even when comparing the non-hybrid options, the Toyota Corolla Cross wins over the Honda HRV. Corolla Cross has 169 hp and 151 lb ft of torque. HRV has 158 hp and 138 lb ft of torque. Furthermore the Corolla Cross has the unique & superior Corolla CVT with a physical first gear that gives you faster acceleration off the line and better reliability. HRV has an old school CVT with no physical first gear.

Been driving a CCH since December, 2,700 miles. Great car but I'm averaging 36.5 MPG, not 42. Second, the fuel tank is only 10.8 gallons. My practical tank is only 8 gallons with a range of 288 miles. That's not very good and I find myself buying gas almost as often as my old Crosstrek. I thought I could get used to this but I was wrong. A 14 gallon tank would have been a home run.

This will just be another great car that Toyota doesn't have on lots and when they do, they will be asking 5K over sticker. None of these new cars really excite me until they are actually available to buy and for MSRP.
@kenhoward3512
@kenhoward3512 Жыл бұрын
Toyota doesn't ask for an additional markup - it's greedy independent dealers who do. You have to find a dealer who sells for MSRP. They're out there.
@braetonwilson4296
@braetonwilson4296 Жыл бұрын
@@kenhoward3512 Toyota is partially to blame too for keeping new car production low. Toyota has come together with Ford, GM, Nissan etc. and pledged to keep new car production low. This allows them to keep prices high and save millions of dollars by not having to pay cash rebates and marketing costs. Due to low production, less cars are sent to dealerships which forces dealers to sell these cars at higher prices so that they can still make a profit.

Got the Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE with blackout badges and love it!! 40-50 MPG depending on drive. Comfortable, easy to drive, pretty fast, lots of headroom, all the bells and whistles, adaptive cruise control is amazing, breaks are amazing, heated seats, sunroof, blind spot, lift gate, AWD, pretty decent audio, apple CarPlay, navigation, nice seats, and just an amazing small SUV. Traded my 2 year old BMW X1 and never looked back. Happy to be back with Toyota for sure! This is not a family SUV, there’s not a lot of leg room in the second row but for a couple it’s perfect. So much better than the “ever expanding RAV4 “ which keeps getting bigger in size and in price. This is like “mini RAV4 meets mini Highlander”! Finally a small hybrid SUV from Toyota! Not everyone wants, likes or needs a huge SUV!! This is the perfect small SUV!!

I brought home a Nightshade model in Celestine paint last Monday. So far I'm really pleased with it. This is my fourth Toyota hybrid, and IMO its powertrain is the best yet. It will take a long, steep hill near me at 55 MPH without high revs from the engine, something none of my three hybrids before it could do. The fastest I was comfortable driving my 2019 Prius up the same hill was 45 MPH. I'm looking forward to our first long trip with the Cross. Thanks for a great review, Alex.

I've been waiting for this one. I liked the idea behind the original Corolla Cross being lower cost and slightly smaller than a RAV4 (I like driving slightly smaller vehicles in general and am in the market for a practical CUV...), but reading peoples' experiences with the 169 horsepower engine put me off. Hopefully the additional horsepower with the hybrid electric engine/motor makes up for that. The fuel economy is extremely nice, too!
@braetonwilson4296
@braetonwilson4296 Жыл бұрын
The 169 horsepower engine is great for the Corolla sedan/hatchback since they're both about 300 pounds lighter than the Corolla Cross. However the Corolla Cross is simply too big and heavy for that engine. Honda made the same mistake with the 2023 Honda HRV, giving it the Civic's base 158 horsepower engine. TheTopher said it took him almost 13 seconds to do zero to 60 in the 2023 Honda HRV.

Yes, weird that the host acted like people were just going to go pick these things up for sticker price down at the dealership. These cars are going to be a major pain in the @ss to buy. Back ordered, waitlisted.. the demand is going to be very high and the dealers are going to be tacking on their ‘dealer adjustments’🙄 It’s a shame because it really does seem like a nice car, and at or below MSRP it seems like a good value. But most people probably aren’t going to want to pay a couple thousand over sticker and then wait like 9 months for delivery…

Great review as usual. I would love to see results for these hybrids in more congested/city environments to see what the real world mpg/range would be. I'm older people now and my needs have changed. We currently have a 2016 Outback w/2.5 and CVT when we we working it easily averaged 17 commuting/errands runs but now my wife is lucky she goes more than 6 miles for shopping/errands and of course in hot weather the a/C is full blast giving her around 11mpg typically. On the highway it still easily gets 33mpg but that amount of driving is greatly diminished these days so I want something that would still get big mpg with our use these days and since my Spark EV is awesome it's size is too small for her comfort meanwhile I'm 6' and she's 5'2 and I love it. Anyway, it seems an efficient AWD hybrid may be in our future and since the dealers are soaking folks for a Maverick Hybrid this car seems like a great option. BTW, your review of the Spark EV helped me decide on one and coming up on 4yrs of ownership I'm still very happy with it so your reviews are a great source for my research on vehicles, thanks!

I think the Corolla Cross is pretty dull, but in this form it's just about the perfect modern economy car for most buyers. Aside from a lackluster interior, I can't see anything significantly wrong with this, and even the interior is acceptable for a relatively inexpensive car, and would have been premium twenty years ago. If Toyota doesn't sell massive numbers it's because they either aren't making enough or haven't figured out how to market them. For most people this will be just as functional as a RAV4 Hybrid, and save money. It's not as if the RAV4 interior is any nicer or much roomier.

Very helpful, detailed review! 👏🏻 I’m really bummed about no spare tire, but hopefully you’re right that one could be purchased and jury-rigged to fit into the cargo space. QUESTION: I’ve heard the center console does NOT have an armrest that slides forward-could you please confirm or refute that? Thanks! 😎

I drove the S model, it doesn’t have an armrest that slides forward. The armrest is tiny and sits high-I did find an armrest on Amazon that does slide forward. I guess that might help??

The lack of a spare tire, when there appears to be enough room for one if the area were better-designed, is disappointing. I would appreciate a dealer having a modification package to accommodate a spare (or, better-yet, change this design Toyota!).

Very interesting. This is now on my watch list. I don't like the black roof and would prefer the front end of the non-hybrid version, but the added acceleration and fuel economy win out, IMO. I need lots of headroom, this looks better than RAV4.

Such a great hybrid suv!!!! Wish they gave the Corolla hatchback the same treatment with all wheel drive and the higher power hybrid motor like this and the Prius get. Why don't they?????!!!!! I would go for the smaller Corolla hatchback if that were the case and you would have a warm hot hatch with AWD and great fuel economy. The Corolla hybrid can't compete with the Civic hybrid.

Honda is very confusing sometimes. The European/Asian HRV has a hybrid model and even an EV in China. China also gets a CRV/Breeze PHEV. Meanwhile in North America, we are getting... a hydrogen CRV instead. 🙃

@@AAutoBuyersGuide Not necessarily. The Civic hybrid in Europe uses a very different hybrid drive system that was used in the Insight, but paired with the 2.0 engine making 181hp. Presumably, the HR-V would use the exact same setup. Honda did confirm last year that the Civic hybrid is coming to the US.
