We review the new 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross, a car-turned SUV. We discuss why this in many cases may be more relevant to buyers because of overinflated pricing. While it is mostly Corolla they have made some welcome improvements to usability. This car competes with the Mazda CX30, Honda HRV, VW Tiguan, Ford Ecosport, etc.

This but unironically. I really like this car because it so confidently knows what it is. It looks good, is priced well, is comfortable, AWD with ground clearance, fuel efficient, and reliable. It's biggest flaw is not having much power but it has enough for most people. Though if this had a higher power variant (like with the 268hp GR Yaris 1.6L) it'd be even better.

So many cars nowadays are trying so insanely hard to get attention with overdone styling, gimmicks, etc. that it’s honestly kinda nice to see a car so comfortable in its conservative skin. It would have been nice to have the 8 speed out of the RAV4 but that transmission still shifts like it is not sure what gear it wants to be in. Maybe someone will find a way to swap in the 2.0t from the IS and the NX platforms. Maybe the TOYOTA NA marketing guys. will give you a TRD version or parts during the mid cycle refresh. For now what you see is what will slowly going to litter the roadways.

That is a reasonable question, but depending on the sales market you are in this is not always an option to get MSRP. Where I live (US territory) the one and only Toyota Dealer marks up the vehicles 7K. If you are doing a trade they hit you with that 7k if you buy it outright the pricing is slightly better. My Friend paid 35K title tax and tags for a 2021 Rav4 XLE (sunroof but no power lift gate) no options. I am afraid to go see how much they are askind for a Corolla Cross since they have 4 on the lot.

As much as I despise SUVs, we just ordered an XLE in Cypress Green for my wife (our 2012 Mazda5 with 215k miles, is starting to incur expensive repairs. It was a FANTASTIC car though). The practicality, predicted reliability, and roomy backseats for our kids were too tempting to pass up. We plan to drive it until the wheels fall off. We purchased for MSRP and the trade-in value of the Mazda5 nearly quadrupled in less than a year.

I got the XLE so I could adjust the power seat exactly to my liking. One of my kids drives the car alot and he enjoys it too. Just a great, comfortable, economical car with loads of useful safety features and very spacious cargo area for the size. But what's good for me may not work for you... gotta try it out for yourself. I did 2 or 3 test drives at different dealers before making my decision. Honestly, any Toyota is going to be good for the average consumer^^ Reliability is a major plus, and the overall usability is just near the top~~ This car is just as user-friendly and practical as the Corolla sedan and hatchback :) Yes the CVT is pretty drone-y, but it's not as bad as some other CVTs. I think Honda and Toyota make some good CVT transmissions. At least the Corolla Cross has a physical first gear to get it going off the line.

Mr Geese and Jack. Love the review. A few things. I bought the hatch because your review was so convincing. I ended up buying a sedan too. Both XSE, CVT and 2020. I’m ditching the sedan for the Cross. The cross is what the hatch should have been. The backseat is tight and trunk is small. I love the hatch and it looks 1000x better but more space and AWD is driving me to it. The sedan is the odd man out because it just doesn’t work for me. I need a hatch door for work and school. But the sedan is better than the hatch minus the hatch part. The CVT is fine. If you go in knowing it’s a Corolla and that’s it. You’ll be fine. Both cars are at 60k + and 0 issues. The engine itself is plenty. Edit: also there’s a hybrid version coming. If that comes with AWD it’ll be a no brainer over the hatch and sedan.

When I went in the dealer to get my daughter's 2017 Corolla IM with 36k and not in perfect cosmetic condition serviced I was offered 16k on trade. I paid 18k in 2017. Was going to buy a Corolla Cross (the loaded version) and it would have been over 30k. After test driving and hearing the CVT moan and the terrible acceleration, I said besides the extra space and AWD it is basically the same car as the IM. Ended up with a 2022 RAV4 XLE (With some extra packages) at sticker price. There is no comparison between the two vehicles. My daughters driving has improved since we bought the IM and she no longer has those new driver whoopsies. She just drove it 4 hours back to college and she said "OMG when you step on the gas it goes and just doesn't make noise" Just buy the RAV4 unless you live in an urban area and never go on the highway.

My Rav4 hybrid also feels like an appliance. But it's super reliable, super fuel-efficient, and has amazed me just how much cargo this thing can handle. When I bought it, the experience felt so numb, and I immediately began thinking that I had made a mistake (used for commute and grocery hauling). Now that I have owned it for a while and also road-tripped it a few times, I appreciate the Toyota quality and enjoy the efficiency, and appreciate the no drama. The Corolla Cross will be the perfect and wise choice for many people who prefer not to spend a fortune on a car. This model will be a very high-volume model for Toyota.

@@Argedis The RAV4 is five inches longer, an inch wider, and two inches taller. Yeah, that doesn't sound like much, but it's a typical difference between a subcompact crossover and a compact. The smaller Corolla Cross engine and accessories likely make the hood stubbier, so the actual difference in interior space is less than the length difference siggests. If a buyer could get just as much useful space for thousands less money, why wouldn't they take it? The main think given up is a geared automatic and some noise deadening, but the Toyota CVT is one of the best, and not fragile. The noise is sibjective and would need to be heard.

You guys do great reviews, you tell it like it is. The shoppers for this car are not taking it to the "Ring" to do hot laps. Just leased the LE AWD, since my 2014 Kia Soul was totaled couple of weeks ago. First impressions after first 260 miles on broke NYC roads. This Corolla Cross rides very well over bumps, smooth ride, Rear Independent suspension make a huge difference, the car is not choppy over broken pavement when cornering, however there is lots of body roll compared to the Soul. The Soul even with its 1.6 liter felt like a go-kart, very precise and controlled but had a very rough ride. I don't think it's a fair comparison to the Soul. This car goes against the Kia Seltos, Nissan Rouge Sport and Mazda CX-30. You said it correctly its a car to go from point A to Point B with no Drama. Nice interior, comfortable seats, inside feels lot bigger than it is, does not feel claustrophobic like the HRV or CHR, has great visibility, back has lots of storage capacity, just a good small SUV. A great alternative to the RAV 4, if you don't want to spend the money. It really does everything well. I will not be surprised if it will become the sales leader in its category by the end of the year.

My car pool buddy and I assessed this for our daily 200 km round trip commute, and in Northern Canada AWD is a must 4 months of the year. At the end of the day, it didn't make sense over the Rav4, when comparing LEs: Rav4 LE AWD : $30,690 (CAD) at 6.9 L/100 km (41 mpg) - HWY Cross LE AWD: $28,490 (CAD) at 7.1 L/100km (38 mpg) - HWY So for $2200 less, you have less space, much less acceleration, less power, a CVT, and worse fuel economy. Rav4 does have steel wheels I believe... still.... I don't see the argument over the Rav4. I would also suspect that the Rav4 would increase that cost delta in resale after five years of ownership also. The Rav 4 does have 0.6 L/100km worse fuel eco in city driving, however. At least the gas LE AWD. Now, if the cross was available in a manual AWD.... sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet. :P

True, the hybrid Rav4 makes more financial sense than an AWD Cross, especially since the hybrid Rav4 gets better mileage both on the highway and in the city/combined which means you'll hit break even at some point simply by having to buy less gas in the long run. The hybrid Rav4 also has a CVT so that's equal across the board and not actually that bad in daily usage. The biggest positives I can think of for the Cross is that it's a smaller vehicle (the new Rav4 is WIDE compared to the older ones) and there isn't the additional hybrid stuff to possibly go wrong on you if you own it till the wheels fall off. If you were comparing the gas Rav4, your MPG numbers are far off. The gas AWD Rav4 gets 27/34 (city/hwy) and the AWD Cross gets (29/32). Toyota puts the AWD numbers in the footnotes for some reason. Only the Hybrid Rav4 gets 41/38 (city/hwy).

Yeah, I was surprised how botched the CH-R was - ugly, cramped, and with poor visibility. It was like they turned its styling over to the summer intern. Japanese automakers have often had a very poor idea of what younger buyers want, and I think they figured "expressive" (ugly) was part of that (see also: Nissan Juke). This will appeal to all ages by looking like a normal crossover, just in a smaller size.

This "smaller" US compact CUV class kind of sucks and this is a perfect example. The awful amount of exterior noise and the terrible powertrain do create "drama" by reminding you that you bought the cheap crappy option every single time you drive it, and you should have spent like $3k more and made a better choice. I'm sensitive that people have limited budgets, but just get something used in the next segment up with some warranty left, or reduce costs somewhere else. I don't think anyone would regret picking up a RAV4, CX-5 etc over this thing, which despite being built in Alabama, gives me those "developing country Toyota" vibes.

Considering this is the best selling toyota here in Brazil, I can definitely say this is the "developing country Toyota". Whats even worse is that here we don't even get the AWD option and the RAV4 is almost double the price.

The car market is too fccked up right now. Used cars cost more than new and dealers are marking up every new vehicle over msrp. There's no such thing as an affordable, relatively new vehicle anymore.

Extra 3k in this market? That's a pipe dream. I went to go look at new CX-5's and they were starting at 6-10k over MSRP. And people were actually purchasing them... I suspect Toyota will capture a lot of the market with this Corolla Cross due to people just settling for something cheaper.

Not everyone wants or needs a larger car. I test drove every car in this class and the next size up (Rav4, Tucson, Rogue etc) and just couldn't justify spending more for more rear seat space that I'll barely ever use. The Cross ticks all the boxes for me in terms of size, ease of access, cargo area and features and road noise is only noticeable at highway speeds. For normal city driving, it's quiet and comfortable.

Made for purpose and you nailed that comment. The only thing is the CVT. I would be happy with a torque convertor gearbox even if it meant poorer mileage (kms per litre here in Australia).

CVT kills it for me unfortunately. The rest of the car is extremely well executed.

@@icetruckker CVT kills all cars with it for me. Some reviewers say they are good but maybe I am old fashioned and just like the torque convertor.

It's a Toyota if you want a reliable well priced vehicle then that's what you're getting. Anyone that hates on Toyota for being stale or out of date, I just tell them go buy that BMW for 3x the money and get back to me how great a car it is when it has 400k miles or is 30 years old and still hasn't broken down...won't ever happen 🤣

I noticed that the rear springs have sleeves on their lower coils. Years ago I had an Alfa Romeo that had the similar sleeves, rust got to the springs and one broke, deep rust pits cause stress risers which will eventually cause failure.

@@davidhuang2895 Back when I had Alfas they weren't owned by Fiat. I got my first Alfa, a 101 series Sprint back in 1967, had many more through the years until I'd finally had my fill. They did give me reason to learn welding and bodywork, useful skills. Had my last Alfa 25+ years ago.
