I can attest that this engine sounds amazing when giving it the beans. I bought it for the efficiency and honestly thought I'd hate it because of the CVT, and ended up loving it BECAUSE of the engine/cvt. 9/10 for me, and I would happily buy it again. It's comfortable, efficient, attractive, and quiet.

One thing to keep in mind for anyone researching is this is an updated CVT Design. It has an additional Trans Oil pump to help low end and high end "response" and instead of the steel shim belt like the old CVTs it uses a woven chain style belt now to help with durability

Oh interesting, makes sense after hearing the prior Pathfinder with it had a pretty significant bump in towing. Just saw a picture of one I think and looks quite similar to a modern timing chain. I guess it wasn’t enough for them to move on to the 9 speed in the Pathfinder but still kinda glad to hear more modern examples are more robust than the older ones that gave it such a bad rap.

@elihernandez330

Truth is the cvt isn't actually horrible. The problem is that people never get fluid changes and they also hammer it way too much. But if you drive one of these normally and service the transmission by just changing the fluid every 30-40k which isn't too frequently you can get them to last long. I know a guy that has well over 290k on the original jatco CVT with no parts replaced. He just doesn't abuse it by flooring it or not changing the fluid.
@hulong0205
@hulong0205 Жыл бұрын
At least my 100k 13 Altima is still kicking. I think if you don’t drive it aggressively, it will survive. I only changed the transmission oil once at 90k. The dealer said no need despise I asked them to change it. 😂 I guess that’s how the transmission failed 😂😂😂 I lives in New England. Soon will move to hot Texas. See how the warmer temperatures will do to the cvt.

One thing I have noticed is that Nissan increased the price of the Rogue while decontenting it. The SV used to get rear power and 360 camera and more, but now doesn't. You basically have to go SL or Platinum now to not have lost features.

Great review! I just leased an SL w/premium package which is only missing a few platinum options and it's great! I traded a CX-30 Turbo in because it was uncomfortable and the cargo area was too small. I almost got a CX-5 but it wasn't a whole lot bigger with the seats down and honestly felt pretty dated. The Rogue is super comfortable and a great blend of everything this category has to offer at $40k. It's great for a road trip! If you want a better driving experience you have to go up a class to an X3 or something similar.

Thank you for the explanation of everything especially the engine. I was one to be big on the engine specs, but I am now! They are, sort of.... Nissan e-power Asia and Europe only for now. The engine serves only as a generator to supply electricity to a small battery then to a motor. (Serial hybrid) And unfortunately, its fuel consumption, expressed in MPG or Liter/100km is worse than traditional (parallel )hybrids.

I bought it a month ago after test driving CRV, RAV4 and CX-5. Very comfortable and quiet ride. and that's what I was looking for. And the VC Turbo 3 cylinder engine is amazing, go out there and test drive one. In addition, Nissan Pro-Pilot which came with it, is great for long highway driving. It's definitely one of the best SUV in the market/segment. But I wish we could get the Hybrid version in the US. Nissan "X-Trail" (Rogue in Japan) has become one of the best selling SUVs in the country, and Nissan hasn't been able to meet the demand, so they stopped taking the order from prospective buyers. A year and a half wait time. They don't have the engine only version in Japan, only the Hybrid. Well, since it is so popular there, it might never make it here....

The new engine is fantastic, I'm really impressed they incorporated VC Turbo tech into a 3-cylinder. Consistent 32 mpg in mountain driving is impressive, so theoretically could do better with typical FWD freeway cruising. This means the base model is a lot more attractive value, with the much-improved power and mpg at the price point. It does suck they couldn't make it all work with the 9-speed but highway mpg is all made possible by that CVT. I like this more than the base RAV4 or Tiguan. The CRV and RAV4 Hybrids are in a bit different class with their higher mpg and resale value, but the Rogue is outstanding at the price point. It seems logical that they've also got to have a hybrid coming.

@@Phrancis5 They are definitely way more picky on maintenance since they introduced the CVT and if you don't follow the schedule or even execute a bit early you will almost always have problems. I personally have never had an issue with them and prefer how they drive in 99% of use cases. They aren't performance oriented but they are excellent for "normal" driving. I don't see many of the new models having issues like the 2009 altimas or the 14-16 versas and sentras along with the Muranos sprinkled in, but when I did hear about them having issues quite a few people mention how they weren't doing the 30k maintenances 0_o. I can honestly say after living with this car for over a year now, I have zero complaints about the trans. I may have had them while I was getting used to it, but no more. This CVT is absolutely solid. And if you use the pre-dertermined setting correctly, you can keep this sucker in optimal boost/rpm while giving it the hustle. I give it a few knocks here and there just like any car, but I would absolutely buy this car again, no hesitation. I wish they'd put this engine/cvt combo in a compact, TBH. Took delivery of a 24 Rogue SL premium AWD last Monday and so far we really enjoy it. The first impression was that I did not want a turbo charged anything. But when the sales manager explained to me that their family of dealerships give a no mileage lifetime warranty, well I have peace of mind. I took time to make sure in the fine print there were no ridiculous hoops to run through for them to cover things either! As far as the CVT, I can see both sides. Younger folks would trade power/acceleration for feel. For me at 61, my C-Max hybrid with the standard CVT reminded me too much like a 63 Buick dynaflo. Plus, we traded in a GMC due to fear of the 6 and 8 speed transmission worries. If this holds up well, we will make it our last car. If not, we will trade it off. Excellent video and very useful

Negative: I’d heard and read a lot about “gravity seats” being very comfortable. But the driver’s seat was very uncomfortable and gave me lower back pain. Maybe the rental trim doesn’t get the gravity seats? Hopefully for 2023 they kept the good and threw out the bad.

Alex, I have had a well equipped Rogue as a rental for the last week (my Kia will be in the shop for an eternity…). I have been impressed except for two quibbles: when cornering there is a lot of body roll which could make rear passengers queasy and 2: living in an area that gets quite warm the lack of ventilated seats would be a deal breaker. This delete is especially noticeable as the HVAC works great which really accentuates how warm the seats feel while driving. Other than that, well done Nissan.

CVT a strange thing, most don't like them but they'll love when a conventional automatic changes really really smoothly in other words like a CVT, but the smoothest of all a bad thing. Simulated manual gears can make sense if done the right way, not Nissan's way. Nissan decided that gears aren't a fix ratio but it'll depend on conditions in other words you'll have no idea what a particular gear will do at any moment so it's useless. Lastly I agree that an option so the driver can decide simulated gear change or faster acceleration at high revs should be included as simple as a adding a button and some software changes.

It's lame that every company makes you go up a trim to get a slightly larger screen that likely costs them a few dollars more. My other option pet peeve is the lack of memory seating on lower trims. Every power seat should have memory and I suspect it saves almost $0 to omit it.

I have a 2014 Rogue with 209K miles on it and it has been the most reliable car I have ever owned. I am starting to look for it's replacement and while initially the current rogue was not on my list to check out because I was considering a hybrid I have come to see the value again. CR-V bugs me because of the small screens, I am considering a Maverick Hybrid also however the seat seems to be on the smaller size than the seat in my Rogue. The seat was a contributing factor when I originally purchased the 2014 Rogue. Don't like the RAV4, and the 2024 Sportage hybrid weirdly has not been released yet. I have seen the spot shots of probably the 2024 Rogue with the large screen also...... it's back on the list

Thank you Alex for this awesome, comprehensive review. Your review helped me make the final decision to get a Nissan Rogue Platinum with the Premium Package. Love the sound of the 3cyl Turbo. Nissan had the good sense to say goodbye to the 2.5L 4cyl one year after the redesign. Now I really hope Nissan will say goodbye to the CVT transmission and replace it with the 9 speed transmission that is being used in their Pathfinder. That's why I'm leasing mine instead of owning right now in the hopes that they'll make that switch.

I don't understand why they are so committed to the CVT.

Which is why they aren't abandoning the CVT altogether and going with a traditional automatic. Which in all honesty they should considering their track record with CVT's.

The Nissan X-trail (Rogue in other overseas markets) do have a hybrid option available very recently. It's called the e-Power and has electric motors driving the wheels all the time. The petrol engine simply acts as a generator to charge the small battery, so the car drives like an EV. Fuel economy still isn't as great as a RAV4 Hybrid though, about 38 MPG. But all reports are saying it's a great car to drive as it has more power and torque. Maybe it will come over to the US in due time.
@chekvb
@chekvb Жыл бұрын
This looks like a fine crossover and a vast improvement over the previous generation. The problem is that the hybrids have gotten extremely good: they perform significantly better, the fuel economy is generally better (the only exception may be for very fast highway driving), and using them requires no sacrifice of any kind. Gas-only models in this segment are obsolete.

Alex, what do you know about the Owens Magnetic ? Nissan does make a Hybrid but not what you think. They make a modern version of the Owens Magnetic of 1915 , a small gasoline engine turning a generator charging a battery that powers a electric motor that drives the wheels of the X--TRAIL/ Rogue, it is called e-power. It is a system that just make sense for north America, but what does make sense nowadays.

It's a very good looking SUV! The interior in my opinion for the money is awesome. The dash electronics look nice on top trims. Seats and ride great overall. Agree a hybrid variation would be a great helpful for sales. The issues ? There are 3 'weak links' ...1) a 3 cylinder on a large SUV seriously ? 2) the CVT will still have issues around 75k..even if Nissan says its a 'new design' ha 3) the turbo will result in mechanical issues also around 75k likely as well. Any of these 3 issues are problematic at best long term. If its purchased as a lease for only a couple of years, no worries I guess, but if your plunking down many tens of thousands for a "really reliable" driving experience, please look elsewhere my friend (hint any well maintained Toyota vehicle out there new or used, yes most are 'boring' but they last forever).

I know this won't be popular, but it seems overall this gen Rogue is better executed than the CR-V, minus the lack of hybrid. It seems Alex may have been hinting at that here. The Rogue really seems to nail what the core of drivers in this class are looking for. A good mix of space and features and add to that, the interior is really nice! I sat in it at an autoshow along with some of it's other competitors and honestly the only thing that beat it in premium feel was the CX-5, and it wasn't that far behind. And I think this new engine is the cherry on top. I also like how Alex breaks down the handling capability here versus feel. I think how Nissan set it up here is perfect for the class, it drives and feels smooth, but seemingly good handling lurks in the background waiting for the situations when its needed. The CR-V seems so cost-cutting driven. The lack of features on the top end are kind of dumbfounding. How does the Civic have a fully digital gauge cluster, yet the CR-V doesn't. And no pano-sunroof on the top model in this class is crazy. Also I've heard mixed reviews about the hybrid... which sucks because seemingly Honda sacrificed those features to not price the now standard hybrid out of the comparison ranks.

I tried out the CR-V since we have an Odyssey already. Seat comfort differs for everyone, but for me they weren't comfortable at all. Too hard. Was also surprised to see the old huge shifter still in the new CR-V, our Odyssey ditched it, not sure why they kept it on the CR-V. Gets in the way of the storage cubby just like it always did. Tiny moonroof was disappointing, but not a dealbreaker. Really, it was just down to the seats. And holy cow, Nissan nailed those. They're even more comfortable than the fancy Navigator a colleague has. But again, seat comfort varies person to person. And you're right, they really seem to have focused on what most people want from cars in this segment, and they kinda nailed it.

I found other problems he missed after driving in it so was afraid to keep it. Basically, only a few changes and quite frankly while the Platinum is beautiful with the lighted inscript Platinum on the floor as you get in the car, I actually think the 21 engine drove better. DonAlso the gas mileage was better in the 211 and it I had to do it again, I'd have kept my 21. I might be trading this in now bc why keep a big cross over like this when I don't have any children and don't travel. Didn't think of that when I bought it. However, the Rogue is a great and very comfortable SUV to drive. Just my opinion. Thank you

Alex, Is it time to add one more column to your suite of standard ratings? I am thinking of a new category that officially evaluates 'Quality of Fake Gear Shifts' on cars equipped with a Continuously Vexatious Transmission. 😁 When this Rogue made its debut it seemed quite large for the compact class of CUV. With new models pushing the Rogue towards the middle of the pack, the RAV4 must be in danger of being reclassified as a sub-compact 🤔 Fun fact: There is a Toyota Hilux variant sold in Australia called the Rogue.

The 3 cylinder could be set up as 1/2 of an inline 6. An inline 6 is naturally balanced both primary and secondary. The 3 might be set up with 120 degree crank difference for good secondary balance, but it will tend to rock because of the missing 3 pistons causing primary imbalance. It's possible the additional hardware for the variable compression will help cancel that balance problem. We'll see...
