I've been teaching almost 10 years here (Ho Chi Minh city). 1- 25 hours + PREPARATION 2- the suburb (25 min by bus) of HCMC is sometimes10 times less polluted than the city center (I use Air Matters app) 3- If you have a university degree in education your salary starts at $3000/month + flight tickets etc . 4 - Native speakers - lol - Smaller language schools will hire almost anyone who speaks a decent English but at $15/hr (lot of teachers from the Philippines, Ukraine, etc). If you go outside the biggest cities it's even easier and the cost of life is lower. There is a big market for kindergartens in big cities 5- In language schools you may have a lesson at 7:30am and the next one at 10:00am and the next one at 4:00pm and the next one at 8:00pm. At language schools you'll mainly teach evenings and weekends. The best is to teach Mon to Fri 8 to 5 at big private schools (elementary schools & high schools)

Hell I work nearly 60 hours a week in the US just to keep a roof over my head and food in my fridge. Gods this looks amazing!

I have been to Asia many times. I love it. I am not a teacher though. $20 per hour over there is a ton of money. A very livable wage. You will also get the respect and appreciation that a teacher deserves. Also I find that life is much safer in Asia. Very little crime.

Man... I'm contracted to do 36 hours a week in China. But that doesn't include training, meeting, workshop and interviews. Some weeks I'll work the 36, others I'll do close to 50. Despite the high salary, the cost of living is going up a lot here. Feel more burned out every week. Vietnam seems far more relaxed. Thanks for the video :)

As long you don't do terrible things like being drunk in a public place or doing drugs, you as teachers will be just fine because the Vietnamese have huge respect for teachers. Don't ask me why. It's just their tradition and culture.

An important thing to point out is Alex is talking about Ho Chi Minh City or Hanoi. These are big, noisy, polluted cities (the negatives). If you want to live somewhere that doesn't have a gazillion bikes and is a concrete jungle you'll probably end up in a smaller city, where the hours are fewer and the pay is less. The trade off is the better living conditions and fresh air.

Just to add to that bit at 14:30, what makes a huge difference, I think, is how much of the curriculum has already been designed and planned and you basically just have to follow that, and throw in your own activities on top. On the other hand, some places without much material available might have you planning more. So 10 - 60 minutes is an accurate number.

Respecting Teacher from Vietnamese students is a Big bonus. They really celebrate Teachers Day over there !. High school kids punk in Western careless.

God i work 50 to 72 hours a week in the states at a factory. Only working 15 hours a week and still survive sounds like a dream life. lol

I've worked 70 hr weeks in some of the hottest kitchens in California. Its of the most stressful jobs on the planet. I made about the same amount😣 I'll be in SE Asia before the end of the year!

The hardest thing for the Vietnamese, is trying to learn English from all the people coming to Vietnam, to teach English, with heavy accents and broken English themselves. People from India for example, or any other person that can not use proper diction. For example: this gentleman say (you) like it is spelled eww. Not trying to down this guy, it's something to think about before you try to come and teach. Vietnamese are not dumb, they will soon learn that you are not teaching with the proper pronunciation and spread the word that you are not good. Good Luck!

The schools that require weekday afternoon/night and weekends are "training schools". they're absolute hell, and I would never recommend them. Parents are overly picky, not enough classroom material, and they almost always try to take advantage of you... be very careful about choosing schools!

When 25 hours/week is working a lot haha. You know you've found the place you need to be. Damn, I worked at a car wash for 3 years in 33 degree cold and 100+ heat 30-40 hours a week. Vietnam would be awesome.

Couple of comments from someone who has been here for several years now. Netting anything over $20 USD is extremely rare unless you have a full teaching license from an English speaking country and even in that case you would still need to be employed by an international school. I would say even quite getting to the 20 USD is fairly rare since you will be paid in local currency and will usually either be paid at a rate that is slightly lower or you will owe taxes when working for a more legitimate outfit. You can figure about $18 USD if you are a native speaker. You will be paid only for the time you are literally talking to students. Any breaktime at a public school, a period off in between because the school is having an event, prep time at a center, making student comments, preparing tests etc will be unpaid. There may be significant travel time in your day which you will not be compensated for either, and if you are an unlicensed driver it would behoove you to have some bribe money on you. The majority of foreigners here will be barely getting by or older wealthy foreigners who have a pension and wish to supplement it. Some schools are fine with older teachers, and others aren't, that seems to be a personal taste, but you should have a good degree of energy regardless of age. Vietnam is a place to come because you like tropical weather and a different lifestyle, not to save up money. Since things come up, I would say roughly 400 USD a month is a pretty realistic figure for someone who isn't into a lot of drinking, clubbing or dating. Obviously with the coronavirus probably most teachers will have saved nothing or close to it this year, but in a normal year 5k is realistic. I wouldn't say it is easy because to get by on 1k a month probably means going without the latest fashions, western restaurants (except once in awhile) not buying the latest electronic gadgets etc. If you like to be dressed to the nines in designer wear, have a new motorbike to impress the ladies, the latest ipad and iphone, that 1500 can go quickly. If you were Vietnamese you would probably eat less, live with your parents, know cheaper sources of shoes/clothing and make that salary stretch a lot farther. As a foreigner you can save, but it really isn't the country to do it. I would suck it up in China somewhere for awhile and then go to Vietnam after some visits and you find it is to your liking.

30 hrs per week is a pretty full work load? Americans are used to working 40-50 hrs per week and that's just considered normal. I have worked 86hr weeks before. I would love to be able to work 20hrs a week....

My nephew was robbed of all his money in Vietnam. Got a job teaching English the next day for US$13.00 per hour cash paid daily. The first question was "When can you start"? This was 4 years ago. Within no time he had plenty of money and decided to stay for 3 months. Every day the owner of the school asked him "Are you coming back tomorrow"? He had NO TEFL or Degree in English. He was an American and White. That's all he needed!

GIGO ! When one cannot get a job in the States due to lower academic status ( Low GPA, low skill in the job interview, no credential...etc.) , It's a great idea to get out of the States where the competition for a high paid job is a big challenge to a third world country to self sustain.

I was working at a center six days per week. Saturdays I only taught one class, so that prevented me from travelling - that became irritating, that I couldn't travel because I had to teach one class.

I've been offered a 25 hour work week position earning $1,300 per month, which I think sounds pretty good! Means I can work on my astrology KZfaq videos as well during my free time. I'm still in Ireland though, so would you say it's normal to get the job sorted BEFORE going? If I accept they say they will send me an Invitation letter 😊 thanks for this, Alex! So so helpful!

A bit about me - I've got 5 years of full time teaching experience in Hong Kong, a Bachelor's degree and I speak fluent American English. Hi Alex, can you plan the lesson at home prior to getting to your school and then just get paid for the hours you are actually at your school. Say you have an evening from 4pm -8pm do you typically get paid 4 hours or will it work differently? Do you get paid for the class planning?

I've heard that some countries will pay for your residency if you teach there. But it seems that Vietnam doesn't do that.

What constitutes an hour of teaching? I get the feeling its only time in front of a class??? Ive substituted in the USA the past two years... Im at school about 9 hours a day, but in front of a class, only 5 of those...

What's the private English business like there? For example, I charge about 70USD per hour in S. Korea. Obviously way more than you'd ever make in an academy. Granted I know I charge a lot, but I've been here 20 years and have built a reputation. I don't think asking 50USD would be out of the question for someone just starting out.

This guy is promoting jobs in Vietnam without the full information. It is a legal requirement to have a degree in any subject plus a teaching qualification. All of which must be legalized to be recognised... People shouldn't post inaccurate information it's dangerous

Hi, thank you for the information! Is this still similar at the moment? A long term goal of mine, I.E, in 5 year is to be teaching in either Vietnam or Cambodia. I am at uni and have 2 years left of a primary teaching degree, I want to then teach for 2-3 years in Australia first as to have a solid base to come back to if I end up not loving as much as I think I will. I have travelled to aboriginal and Vietnam before and absolutely loved it, but always need a back up plan. How much could I expect to earn with an Australian teach degree and teaching experience?
