As a professional truck driver for 33 years now. My friend I wish you well. You're just starting out. But judging by your pre-trip you're off to a good start. Here are some rules of thumb. Never burn your Bridges at both ends. Another rule of thumb is this. A good way to tell how well a company treats its drivers in terms of pay scale is to look at the equipment and the kind of equipment and how the equipment is maintained by the other drivers. I've seen variant trucks going down the highway and those Kenworths are not cheap. That's your first clue as to how much money you're going to make at a trucking company. The less trucks a trucking company has and the older trucks they have the more money the driver gets in his pocket. In other words they care more about the quality of drivers than they do about the equipment. But it's a double-edged sword. If you plan on staying in the trucking for decades like I have. Set your goals now and stick to them and you will go far and you will be successful. Finally. And this is very important. Make yourself part of the minority and not the majority of drivers. And what I mean by that is most drivers complain about everything and the company put you on The Blacklist. Then you won't make any money and you'll be frustrated and take your anger out on everybody else around you. If you pay attention to how the game of trucking is played. You will make a lot of money. In other words the minority of drivers do what they are told and pay their dues. When you do that the company will put you on a reliable driver profile and no it's not ass kissing. It's just common sense. That's my advice as an old fart of 33 years in trucking to a young guy who's just starting out like yourself. Stay safe and stay away from the brat packs! Keep the shiny side up and the greasy side down.

It's gotta be tough to leave a company that gives you a brand new truck and never tells you what to do. Good luck on the new company.

I work for a company named AmeriFreight, GREAT PAY! Based in Chicago. They're a 1099 company. I pull $8k a month and I average 6 hours drive day.

OTR is a scam. You are literally at work 24/7 and get paid very little compared to the hours and inconvenience.

#1 NEVER blindly trust gps. #2 unless you are an owner operator there is no such thing as a "sleep schedule" in trucking specifically with big carriers. Example my current load picked up at 0800 in Guymon OK on the 15th. Then the first delivery was 0300 in Baton rouge LA this morning the 17th and now my last stop delivers at midnight tonight the 17th in Brundidge AL. My next load picks up at 8pm tomorrow the 18th in Collins MS and then delivers at 5pm the 19th in Joplin MO.

Driving at midnight is weird. I drive ready mix. Often we start running around midnight since that's what a lot of construction customers want to do. When you find out you're starting super early there's some dread. As long as you get to bed on time, give yourself enough sleep, it isn't so bad. There aren't any 4 wheelers around so you get to the job and back fast and more safely. Before you know it the sun's coming up and you get a new perspective on the day. So time goes by surprisingly fast.

What made you think ot was a good idea to work for a mega carrier? They are legendary for awful pay, hometime, and unpaid labor. 300 dollar weeks are not unheard of. Immagin that. Out on the road working all day for 7 days sleeping in a truck away from family and home and getting paid only 300 dollars. You did 14 hours a day of work to get 300 dollars. Truckers get screwed out of pay more then anybody. Half the work they do thry don't get paid for. The entire industry is criminal. They get sewed all the time but they decided paying the lawsuits for unpaid work once in a while is cheaper then just being honest and paying the driver fairly. They make 10 billion from ripping off the drivers a year and get sued every 3 years ordered to pay 130 million. No wonder they keep cheating the drivers. Good business

You can always tell if a driver is new when they park . They always pull the red air button. Usually after a year Of driving they finally read the red button.

What a mellow truck driver! I never realize that your demeanor existed in the industry. You're like .......human!! Inclement weather you take notice and safely bow out for your safety and the safety of others. Not 75 mph passing cars, splashing waves of water and slush. Pushing,tailgating etc.. No, you're carefully driving like its someone else's truck, and a million dollar load,...as you should. I just went bobtail to Walmart to get some supplies, My first run with it is in the morning got pretrip planned for 4 am! I love my old routes M-W-F to South Carolina T-TH-S deliver to Charolette North Carolina. I live 30 minutes from work, but like Alex says it takes longer in a semi. Alex if you needed more money you should have asked Variant. Keep safe Alex.

Every company has a down side of the pay is higher the problems are usually higher too. I hope it all works out Alex stay strong.

My step dad drives sleepers for ups. He’s out of town 4 days a week and home for 3. Ups treats they’re drivers super well.

I worked 18 wheelers from 1999-2016 across the country. Watching this video was extremely cringe. I began to experience drivers of this skill and knowledge level for a few years before I quit. It does not surprise me that there are people driving trucks like this man out on the road who are extremely lacking professionally. If he represents the drivers moving freight then he and Buttigieg have the same level of understanding of transportation, ignorance

These days the companies are not making that much profit to be able to pay their drivers more . Rates are extremely low and fuel is high . Buy your own truck and see how much money you’ll be making after paying all your expenses. Good luck

Is it just me or does Alex have PissPoor planning skills??? I'd rarely ever consult a gps for truck stops along my route, I'd know where I was stopping before I got rolling. There were exceptions to that, like an area that I was unfamiliar with, even so, I wouldn't be asking the gps about it, I'd have done my research before I started rolling.

I drive for Magnum. They’re a cool company to work for if it doesn’t work out with this new company. I’ve been with them 5 months now. They start u off at .48 cpm plus a .2 cpm raise every other month til they max you out in a year. They get you home on time or early. You pick your return date. Plus no force dispatching. My truck number is 2054 if you’re ever interested

Hey Alex, I met you when you first started in Variant in Dallas. I'm glad you're going somewhere better for you. I left in December as well. The place I went to so far has been great.

What you don't understand is you don't get to set when you want to work in trucking. Your goal is to get those loads there on time otherwise you get penalized. It is a big deal to deliver loads late. What you don't understand is the world doesn't bend to you. But because you're young you have the self-entitlement, I don't think you will last in trucking. Bottom line is any company you go to they want their loads there on time they don't really care about your personal time or when you want to drive. That's why I trucking is tough I've been doing this for 12 years.

Tip. Don't use Garmin unless you're in middle of nowhere like Antarctica or Alaska or some rain forest. Google maps is literally updated every second.

I’m in the same boat as you, Alex currently OTR with only three days a month off. Every time I go out it gets harder and harder looking into the LTL.

Drivers need to go where we’re treated best. Just like everyone else. Gone are the days employees stayed at one company for 30+ years.

Not a big loss for them when your job is to drive and you literally drive the wrong direction, oblivious to NSEW, too scared to drive in the rain.

As a trucker for 10 years iv learned alot from the old timers who are rapidly dissapering. Trucking used to pay 100k a year in the 70s when 90% of trucks were owned by the driver. Now 90% of trucks on the road are owned by a monopoly company and drivers make 43k a year. See what happened their?? Deregulation allowed big business to start a monopoly over trucking. And drivers went from making 100k a year to poverty. And drivers went from owning their trucks to nobody owning their trucks. The rich got mega wealthy, average citizen driver got way more poor, now society has few options for social mobility. You either go to college to be a doctor. Learn computer programing. Or you live in poverty. Their are no legit options anymore to making good money without massive debt and 8 years of your life waisted at college to learn crap that doesn't matter and doesn't have anything to do with your major. The system is one giant scam. I don't blaim the millions of people who would rather live on welfair then work hard. Why what's the point to working? Either live on welfair and be poor but always have what you need. Or go work your ass off day and night and be poor and usualy not have enough for what you need. I don't work to pay bills. I would to pay bills AND to have fun and go somewhere. I have no interest in working if all it offers me is survival money. No fun. No wealth. No vacation. No new car. No house. No savings for retirement. Retirement now days is a giant gamble. Used to garenteed but now it's all cassino gambling in the stock market. Your retirement and survival is based on stock market gambling. Which is a 401k. Your future isn't set on your hard work its hinges on a gamble. Don't we deserve better then that? We delivered our entire lives and at the end of the day our survival rests on a unlikely gamble? No we deserve garentees not maybes .

For future reference there's a device truckers have been using for decades. It's called a map (i.e. Truckers Atlas).

Alex- I've driven OTR for 12 years and now drive a city bus. Believe me, 90 percent of these companies don't give a flying f about you- your family, your interests or your commitments. To them, a driver is just ''meat in the seat.'' At the end of the day, if it ain't about money- it ain't about shit. You seem to have a good head on your shoulders. Do what profits you and advances your goals. Also, KW's , especially hoods (W900's) look cool but the storage and all around livability of a Freightliner is so much better. I would have loved to run team with a driver like you!

The day i drove my little civic from Santa Barbra to New Jersey, i felt the pain of driving straight no break but stopping only to refuel and piss twice, and after 18 hours, i pulled over at a gas station and slept in the 2 door back seat for 7 hours woke feeling like a Semi ran over me.

The grass is not always greener on the other side. I don"t know how long u r trucking overall and what ur pay per mile was but u gotta work your way up. Job hopping is not always contributing to it.

Walmart is the only company that actually treats us like human beings in every way. Best move I've ever made. You don't quite have the experience needed yet to work here but man once you get there check them out. As young as you are your you could retire with a boatload of a 401k before you are 60. Walmart doesn't hand out the position, you have to earn it. Plenty don't make it through the onboarding. If you can though I promise it's the best move you can make.

It's why I drive for Walmart. We're spoiled. Over 100k per yr. Four nights per week in truck. Home for 3 nights. 26 days of PTO your first year. Assigned tractors. Bring your wife or kid/grandkid. Etc...etc...

You younger guys and gals rely on your GPS for everything. They still make these things called a road atlas and regular maps. I always would look at the paper maps to see what’s the best route and most direct as opposed to the GPS possibly sending you the wrong way for a four hour wrong way drive. Lol I drive overnight 6pm-6/7am and the only thing I stop for is freezing rain/snow when it’s below freezing. Anything other than that I just take it slow, but not stop.

Good luck Alex! There’s no reason that ANY Otr driver should make less than 3000 a week. Guarantee. You’re away from your family and home 24/7, putting your life at risk every single day. you should get compensate accordingly. I hope your next company pays better. Please keep us updated.
