The heater stopped blowing air in the smart car, and the dealership wanted $380 for a new motor plus labour to fix this.
I found a fix online at www.evilution.co.uk/719 and cleaned out the copper terminals inside the motor.
It took about 20 minutes, and cost $0!

Thanks a ton for this video, my blower just went out last night and I was pissed I might have to shell out 4-500 dollars to get the motor replaced. Did a little extra digging and found this. I'm much happier to pay $5 for some 400 sand paper and 5 minutes taking the blower out.

Thanks for posting this on you tube. The blower motor on our Smart stopped working. It took me 30 minutes to get it running again. The biggest challenge was to get into a "comfortable" position to get the blower out without breaking my back. One hint: The holding latch for the connector is part of the plug and not part of the the socket. To unlock, push the latch with a screw driver towards the plug.

i wish there was a picture of the plug and the location of the tab on the internet as i am having trouble getting it out and I'm afraid I'll rip the wire. Could you be more specific? i know it sounds so stupid but only you know like the others who have tried how hard it is.

Richard Snodgrass Ever figure out how to get it out? Mine won’t budge. Can’t tell what clip or tab is holding it in place.

Mine was working intermittently, just did that and the cooper wasn't as dirty but I gave the whole thing a good clean. Hope it will work continuously from now on...

just did mine today, if it worked, it was blowing like "1" when set at "4", cleaned it in 2 minutes with a piece of sandpaper, works like new :)

We had a rather different problem with our Smart 4 2. The blower was intermittent and when pulled, the brushes which are under a pair of white rubber boots, were worn to the point that the connectors were blocking any other forward travel toward the commutator. I bought brushes (little rectangular profile graphite slugs with the a curved surface matching the communtator diameter on one end and a couple of angle cuts to retain the feed spring on the other) from EBAY, and they were identical to the originals except they were 3 times as long and the conductor pigtail was only a third the size of the original. I am concerned that the brushes might not transmit enough current through the skinny pigtails, so I made flat brade from stranded wire from lamp cord that approximately matched the original pigtails and soldered them in. We just put the motor back in the car, which since we have a US left hand drive edition is a torturous blind operation for someone with a lot of left hand arm strength. The motor now works like a champ, but now it makes a droning noise.

+Elizabeth Elmore That's creative. My brushes were still ok and working now, but will have to replace them at some point in the future, I'm sure. I have the droning noise as well.

The droneing noise stopped after about a day. I guess the new brushes had to wear in. But now, about 7 months later the motor has stopped again. Going to have to take it apart again this morning.

Is there a trick to getting the top latch in place? Don't know how it snap's back in.
@alexx.c
@alexx.c 8 жыл бұрын
i had to line it up perfectly and push the blower right in, and even push the latch down. it didn't automatically snap in place

it's a similar issue. dirty contacts on the fan speed selector. mine was beginning to do that as well. a bit more complex to take apart to fix but similar process. (I've since sold the smart car, although miss it)

This is 6 years old but if anyone else has this issue it's most likely the resistor that is bad not the blower motor...it's it's both. Currently dealing with a bad resistor

hey I have been trying to figure out what kind of bolt is holding in the blower?
@alexx.c
@alexx.c 8 жыл бұрын
it's not a bolt, it's a clip. you'll need a flat head screwdriver to pry it open before sliding the blower out

A & E Real Estate Team - Royal LePage Real Estate Services Where exactly? Mine won’t budge! I see one kind of clip but it can just be lifted up by hand-still rock solid. Won’t move!

Richard Socalpipesmoker I know right? Ever figure this out? Feels so tight seems like a screw or bolt is holding it in! Even the Evilution site doesn’t take a pic of this tab- even after they remove it! Why not??? I can’t find what’s holding this thing in. Seems so easy for everyone to remove... Can’t figure this out.... if I do I’ll take a pic of the tab so people could do this. I’m sure it’s easy once you know where it is. Seems nobody thought to take a picture of the one thing holding it in.

A & E Real Estate Team - Royal LePage Real Estate Services I didn’t see you put any screwdriver in a clip to loosen the motor assembly. Looks like you used a screwdriver to take the wires out, but did you undo this clip by hand? Did you do it before filming?

A & E Real Estate Team - Royal LePage Real Estate Services Thanks! Finally figured it out! Just really needed a lot of force- been on there for 10 years! Thank you-all is well and the rest took 5 minutes. It was filthy. Thank you! If anyone is finding it hard to turn, don’t give up-it might be really in there... it’ll turn given enough force....

SHOCKER, I have the exact same problem...TWICE. Way out of warranty now at 98,500 miles. - I read one of your comments...it's just one clip to struggle with and it removes? - What about the power connecter? Did it match up like a puzzle piece or did you have to somehow connect it before remounting? Thanks in advance.
@alexx.c
@alexx.c 8 жыл бұрын
the connector can only go in one way. pretty easy to match up. check out the evilution link on the video, they have pretty detailed photos of the clips, etc.

johnnyinsnj Ever figure this out? I can’t find this tab or clip either. Evilution website doesn’t show it either. Shows you how you might be able to “feel” it. I can’t feel any tab there where it points to in the pictures. Driving me crazy!
