This video will show you how I repaired two issues with the HVAC fan motor on my 2008 smart Fortwo.
===
Hey kids! One thing I didn't mention in my video is the fact that under the carpeting under the driver's seat is a package of electronic components. I didn't bother to investigate what it was for (I imagine it's airbag related), but you should be aware it's there anyways.
It turned out that this fix didn't last long for my car. If you have the same issue, go to the next step. See my video on how to replace the fan motor brushes:

Congratulations Andrew from Canada (I might immigrate there if 'you know who' wins the next election)! I'm glad the video helped, BUT... the repair on my car only lasted a short while before the problem returned. That's why I made a second video on how to replace the fan motor brushes. You can find it on my channel or search for "Replacing Fortwo Fan Motor Brushes". Winter is coming and you're going to need a reliable heater. Good luck and thanks for watching! PS - Sadly...my 11-year-old Fortwo finally bit the dust a couple weeks ago. I'll miss my little Frenchy, but it was fun while it lasted.

Thanks for this, your video gave me the confidence to carry out the removal of the motor and the installation, The trickiest part of the job was undoing the electrical plug and after that it was straightforward. I saved a small fortune here in the U.K. because the main dealer quoted £311 to supply and install a new fan motor.
@Denb7
@Denb7 2 жыл бұрын
We agree on that electric plug. Either a couple more inches of wire or a plug with an easier release clip would have been nice. I'm glad you were confident enough to successfully tackle this job on your own. Congratulations!

Best video on KZfaq !! It worked exactly the same. I did t have any mechanical tools so I scratched the dirty grease off with a screw. And also used the alcohol. I fit under the seat/ so it was easy!!❤

Hi from Florida Denny. Thanks for your videos. My HVAC motor's been out awhile (2-years) & I was reticent to tackle it, looked to be a "bear." Finally it was time. Checking KZfaq I saw the 1:27 minute post, what an easy job! But checking further I found your video with "the rest of the story." It's still a much simpler fix than I'd imagined, but you gave some vital detail. I'm 6'1" & 195lbs and my 68 year old body does bend as well as it used to. Taking the seat out is a must, after that, the failed motor was out in a flash. The new one is on order and I look forward to having the AC back with the summer heat starting to hit the north end of the Mid-Florida Ridge. Thanks for you helpful post.

I imagine that in Florida, your A/C is as vital to you as our heaters are to us here in Massachusetts. I'm glad you looked further and found my video. When I went to do my fan repair I had to watch several short videos in order to get the big picture. That's why I decided to make my own video and include every step of the job. I'm glad you were able to accomplish your repair and that I was able to help. My little smart is now a thing of the past, but it was really fun to drive for the 11 years I had it. Peace!

Thank You Soo much.. Great video. I was on the verge of junking my car.With winter coming and my mechanic telling me it's the switch and he can't get one anywhere I figured I would fall prey to the foggy windows and frost of New England. But I saw your video this morning and during my lunch hour I pulled out my blower cleaned it off and now it works like a champ.. You saved me the thousands of dollars it would have cost me to get a new car.... Nothing but praises and thank you....!!!!!👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍

Thanks, but I wish making these videos wasn't out of necessity. My 11-year-old smart is showing its age as things are starting to breaking down. In under 60k miles, I've gone through two starter motors already ($800+ cost at a dealer... luckily, 1st one was under warranty). Now my check engine light, the ABS light, and the air bag light are all on. The check engine & ABS are related to axle speed sensors which is something that may be beyond my ability as a DIY job. I think the airbag light might be a result of removing the seat and/or from me lying on top of the electronics package located under the driver's seat. In warmer weather I'll check that out. The loss of ABS affects not only the brakes, but also the hill holding ability and traction control. Recently, on a snow slicked hill, I momentarily lost traction and did a complete 180 in traffic. No crash! I was lucky. Thanks for watching!

@@Denb7 I bought my 2011 Fortwo in 2015 with 36,000 miles on the clock. At 37,000 the check engine light ended up on, long story short, it was burned valves. The car lot I bought it from bought the parts and I supplied the labor. Thank God I'm a mechanic. I like working on the Smart but I also hate working under the dash. Having seat belt problems now but I love my Fortwo.

Thank you so much for your video. I'm really a total newbie regarding auto mechanics, but the bad ventilation fan was getting on my nerves (my friendly mechanic didn't bother with 'fixing' it) and I thought it was 'something simple'... as indeed it was, but I could only do the 'fix' after watching your video to figure out exactly how to remove the motor... and then it was cleaning time! The ventilation fan never worked so well (I bought my 2009 Smart 2nd hand a couple of years ago), and even if it's just a 'temporary' fix, according to your other video, well, now I got enough confidence to remove the motor again and possibly replace the brushes... I just have to see where I can get them here in Portugal. P. S. I'm just 50 years old at the time of writing, so I did not remove the driver's seat. It was still a pain to work upside down for such a long time, so now I've got lots of cramps! 😄Alas, that comes from being reasonably out of shape... P. P. S. I've just noticed that @Américo Simões, who posted a week ago, is also from Portugal... so, now you've got two free lunches if you happen to come over this way! P. P. P. S. I just read that your own Smart has bitten the dust... such a pity! But I'm glad that you had your fun while it lasted. It's a fun car to drive, even in spite of all the small little quirks requiring fixing now and then, many of which require serious work from a certified mechanic (i. e. like the occasional need to lift the whole motor to get access to relatively trivial parts, which, on a larger car, would be much more easily accessible...).
@Denb7
@Denb7 4 жыл бұрын
That trip to Portugal keeps getting better and better! It makes me very happy to know that you were able to repair fan motor because of my video. Congratulations! The smart is definitely a quirky car, but it was really fun to drive. One reason I bought it was to show my fellow Americans that they don't all need to drive gigantic, gas-guzzling, earth destroying trucks or SUVs to drive (alone) to work or the grocery store. I was happy to show my tiny car to anyone who was interested in seeing it. I'd even let people climb inside. They would assume that they'd feel too confined inside. Their preconceived notions would disappear as soon as they tried it. I enjoyed hearing their surprised reactions as to how spacious it actually was inside. Americans are terribly wasteful and many have little concern for our environment (including our president). I have traveled in Europe and Americans could take some lessons from there. But no, 'we' continue to hold onto a stupid notion that "we're #1" even while we are falling behind many other countries. Unfortunately, two more traits hold Americans back, stubbornness and an unwillingness to admit that we're wrong. Oh well... I tried to change some minds with my tiny smart car.

I was crushed when, after cleaning the dirty commutator with my brilliant idea of using a cordless drill and sandpaper, the motor still failed. But 2 shots of WD-40 and a nudge with the screwdriver on the brushes and all is well again. If this is your situation too... I'm glad if I was able to offer some insight. Good luck!

Excellent detail on where things are and clip tricks needed to work on it. I also notice that there appears to be a square channel in the motor housing that connects from right near the brushes through the firewall. Might be a fresh air inlet. I wonder if some combination of compressed air, vacuum cleaner and/or a touch fog of WD40 through this channel might solve the problem without dismantling.

I hear ya brother! I spent a lot of time pounding the dashboard or looking for bumps in the road to kick in my fan motor. My issue started after about 2 years, but between pounding and bumps it suddenly disappeared for another 6 years before the motor refused to come on again. At that point, I had nothing to lose by tearing into the thing. Worst case scenario would be to buy a new fan motor assembly, but being the ultimate cheapskate that I am, I opted to try the repair. Thanks for watching. You want to see just how much of a cheapskate I am, check out my video, "Cheapskate's Guide to Free Deodorant" ( kzfaq.info/get/bejne/aMynpc2jq9a6Zqc.html )
