a nice guide on deleting you swirl flaps on you plastic manifold. you dont need an expensive delete kit on this type of manifold.

Great video thanks. To clarify for people I think when he says 10mm bolts, the bolt head is 10mm (thread is m6). I used M6 x 16mm long bolts, I tapped the holes to M6x filled them with Gasket and used the bolt with asingle washer and they sat almost flush on the inside perfect fit 👍👍👍

I absolutely recommend to do this on every "plastic" JTDM. I did mine and have found two on their places, but third stacked above valve and fourth didnt find at all. Still mistery, where it can be. Maby previous owner knows. :) Friend of mine was not so lucky and his 159 engine is totaled after flaps flought through his engine... So do not think too much and remove them !!!

Fourth one passed through the cylinder causing only minor damage. Weakens the compression a little bit on that cyl. Sometimes starting in cold weather on three cylinders and fourth one coming shortly.

Great video as ever . I changed the manifold for one with strengthened swirl flaps along with a new EGR valve but I keep getting a P2013,error . The flaps are opening and closing and I’ve checked the loom. Would removing the swirl flaps help this problem or is there something that needs to be deleted in software to make it go away . Tearing my hair out as car has been in my garage without mot for 4 months now . TIA

Just have the manifold off mine this evening on first examination swirl flap has been removed already but the little round bar is still in there that the flap was on I suppose it should be OK what do you think

Hello, I would appreciate your advice on below please if you can? I have a plastic manifold just like this on my 159 1.9 jtdm. 1. I heard other Alfa owners say when de-flapping manifold car becomes sluggish at lower rpm range as its can no longer regulate air flow - how true is this? 2. I also have my car remapped with complete EGR/DPF delete (EGR in the bin, manifold blanked off), but its smoking a bit on acceleration, company who's done my remap advised that it must be a boost leak somewhere and pointing fingers at my manifold? 3. Would it be a better alternative replacing plastic manifold with a solid aluminum manifold from older GT/147 JTDM models p/n Pierburg 46823848 which has no flappage? keeping in mind that you can't split plastic manifold open for proper cleaning? Thanks a lot!

Hi mate can you tell me exactly what bolts you used instead of blanks (10mm self tapping bolts and washers?) My cars due to have the swirl blank and delete and I've bought the blanks but now I'm understanding they won't be any good. I Like what you gave done it seems more reliable than the blanks. Senzor on the intake manifold is MAP senzor (manifold absilute pressure) not MAF (mass air flow)

Hi there, helpful video. Do you know what the process would be to remove the swirl flaps on a giulietta 1.6jtdm. ave read that they are fixed and literally just slide out but im not sure. Cheers

Hey, great material - as usually on your channel! Is the procedure similar with the older, aluminium intake manifolds? Also, when you seal the swirl flap holes with screws, do you need to thread them or does it hold with the sealant only?

The 10mm screws are just the right size to self tap. As you can see in the video I get a good level of tightness.

Hi Neal Can the plastic part to this manifold be split open to clean or is it just a matter of doing the best you can with it? Also I've take it apart to remove the swirl flaps and 3 of the 4 have already disappeared, the engine has been running fine since I've had it tho(1 year) and there hasn't been an obvious moments were something has gone seriously wrong, what are you thoughts? Very good video .. Is it possible to fit metal intake manifold rather then plastic one (before facelift - 2005 - 2008) ? And I have heard that it can be done with intake from older engines (1.9 103kw, euro 3) which didn't have flaps ? Tnx

Swirl flaps are fastened with two screws on the axles. :)

Are the plastic manifolds replaceable with the earlier metal ones?

Yes, you can replace it with early style 103kW engine manifold - without flaps, or newer 110kW metal manifold. It aslo has flaps, but they usually don't go in engine. But there is no reason to replace it - just remove the flaps and you are good to go

I tried to snatch my aluminium inlet manifold of my old euro 3 GT to use on my euro 4. The litle coolant "thumb"on the very right of the manifold side is stuck behind a rib of the bracket for the common rail pump. Even filed a notch out of the rib but stil can't get it out. Any sugestions Neil?

You can also delete the flaps from the software...so that the solenoid won't be neded

You can't delete the flaps but you can tell the ecu to not use them.

cooling pipe. if its snapped you need another manifold.

Are there any blanking kits for the plastic manifold flaps? Also Is it a straight swap to fit the aluminum manifold? I feel the blanking kit with the press fits would be more secure. Cheers.

2.0 does not have problem with flaps, only 1.9

No but I always do as I don't like the stress of leaving the cambelt tensions on 2 tiny bolts.

@@ItaliaAutos thanks for answering. My 159 2.0 has the problem that the turbo pressure sometimes falls or even can´t increase above 0.8 overhall in big loads like driving in a hill. So i think that some gasket or maybe some swirl is failing. I´ve already changed the EGR. Do you think is possible that something is wrong in the intake manifold? I think the videos manifold is quite similar or even the same as mine.

If the flaps are fine and don't look like they are about to fall off any moment now, do you really need to take them off? Isn't it enough to just give them a good clean and let them stay and do their job? And if removed don't you need to delete them also from the ECU?

I am wondering the same thing. No one mentions that, but I read that the ECU can store an error about a broken flap so probably something has to be done go the ECU idk..

@@shpucas Has to be done obviously. I wonder if I can somehow find out if these flaps are removed on my GT without taking the manifold out? Do you have any idea. I bought the car with 177.000km on the clock and have it for almost a year now. The engine is in great shape. It's 1.9jtd with 150hp.

@@philipgligorov5848 you could find it out by connecting ECU scanner, i believe air to fuel ratio would be different than normal at idle, as without flaps, you let more air into engine, thus your acceleration, torque, fuel eco, emissions would be different too.

Anyone had issues with the 90deg plastic coolant pipe wedged between the two parts snapping off? Seemed like the one off mine was badly fatigued and broke very easily on both ends. Seems like this part is unavailable from Alfa Romeo to make matters worse!

@@ItaliaAutos I had a local machine shop create an aluminium replacement for this. If you are interested, he can do a run of these and ship them over (we are located in Australia). It will be a cheaper option compared to replacing the whole manifold.

Prob had a new manifold in its life. Some garages won't remove them they just replace the whole manifold

Hello, for be honest i like you videos, cause you have hudge knowledge about Alfa cars. But unfortunetly you job is often not clean... In this cas you damage the part when you pull the swirl off. Realy not great

mechanics work fast to keep the cost down...i'm sure the job was fine with an off-camera tidy up. And besides, you try filming as you work, he's trying to do both at once. Shut the fuck up.
