This is the exact twin of my Dad’s 1966 Duetto Spider 1600, the car I learned to shift stick on at age 16. It was many years before I found a manual transmission as rewarding to operate as the Alfa’s long-throw five-speed with featherweight clutch. In fact, everything about this car is featherweight, which for a sports car is a top priority, because it enables the car to manage rapid transitions - braking, cornering, powering out of corners - without the burden of overcoming the inertia of, say, the 900 pounds of additional mass the driver of a Porsche Boxster would have to wrestle with in every turn. His cornering speed might be as high as or higher than the Alfa’s, but the intoxicating delight of driving a car that disappears around you to make you feel one with the road is the ultimate in real-world driver engagement in any segment, including exotics. The only sports car available today in this classic 1960s roadster configuration is today’s Mazda’s MX-5, which is an entirely different animal compared with early generation Miatas. Within 100 lb of the Alfa’s weight, the Miata makes 70 additional horsepower out of its 2L naturally-aspirated four and is much faster. But more importantly, it is able to give its driver the sheer joy of driving an open-air sports car on rural two-lanes, much the same as with the Alfa. I own a 2019 ND2 Miata, and I can attribute my love for it to my early driving experiences in this little Alfa. Driving took on a whole new meaning for me after my first encounter with a classic lightweight sports car.

I love the 105 Series Alfa Romeos. The Saloon, Coupe and Spider all look gorgeous! I saw (and filmed) several Coupes at an Alfaholics open day a few years ago. The car featured here really drives well.
