Was surprised to see that it is electric powered instead of pneumatic, since it has pneumatic bearings... Interesting!

british invention from 1950's at southampton university, british companies still manufacture most of these products for worldwide companies. benefits are better running accuracies, lower vibration than conventional bearings, due to self centering shaft and non contacting parts, can last forever too....

ah, self centering shaft. that makes sense. I love air bearings.

The first patent for an industrial air bearing was 1904 by Westinghouse but the invention / first mention dates back to the first half of the 19th century.

This micro-machining operation is thinking of puling the trigger on a full CNC air bearing lathe build in 2022? Wonder how we can perfect perfection just a bit ever slight more for perfection.

How does the surface finish affect the viscosity of the air ?
@Sastas
@Sastas 4 жыл бұрын
Not much. bad finish cause turbulance, and also lowering the stable "film" distance between surfaces. You have to make these very smooth and precise, you have a couple of tenths of a milimeter.

how does compensation get controlled?
@loadpointbearings8557
@loadpointbearings8557 9 жыл бұрын
meocats airflow changes, as airgap changes, creating a pressure differential, then rotating part returns to the equilibrium condition...in real terms the shaft bounces around in an orbit, with small oscillations around a couple of microns, of this orbit.....

Are these for milling or just drilling?

Don't know about this particular model but typically these are for just drilling PCBs, but some can do milling operations as well.

Air bearings are things of the past (and Dan Gelbart is a dinosaur) , because with the development of the computing science we can now exploit the phenomena of magnetism and get our spindles to reach nanometer scale precision at low cost. If you want precision the only way is to adopt magnetism.

Frequent use of the word "Fuck" is beginning to grate on me on how inane and dumb commenters are. Its shallow and pointless. I keep flipping through random comment sections and some idiot is keeps saying "WTF" over the least consequential issues. Cut it out, its lame, its stupid and you are stupid fore using it.. and yes, Applied Science brought us here.

@@dootthedooter Its called the slow degradation of society my friend. Like the frog slowly boiling itself to death in gradually heated water. a slow crescendo, the subtle death of standards..Overly frequent use of the word "WTF" is a negative symptom of something far more regrettable down the line. You just need to stop staring at a screen... and think about it.

I saw that video too, but I've had this one saved to my playlist longer before I ever saw applied sciences video. I've tried my hand at making graphite air bearings and used super glue fumes to adjust the flow rate (super glue in a sediment bowl in the air line, as the superglue vapor travels through the graphite it very slowly restricts the pores allowing you to adjust the flow rate to be more ideal for your applications). Worked alright but was very easy to over-do so I typically left the graphite as-is. This one doesn't use graphite or other porous media so it's not quite as stable nor can it handle quite the same levels of pressure.
