Newman, Steiner, Kaufman, Wyler... we owe such a debt to the massive wealth of talent from European Jewish immigrants, not only in music composition and conducting but screen writing, directing, and acting that was behind Hollywood's great works. In addition to Alfred Newman, early film composers of Jewish background were Dimitri Tiomkin, Franz Waxman, Erich Korngold, and Bernard Herrmann.

Breathtaking score.

David Niven begged not to play Edgar. His generation were reared on these literary classics. Forced to do it as he was under contract, he ruined a take fir the climactic death scene of Cathy. He had a bad nasal problem but soldiered on. When leaning over Merle Oberon (his real life girlfriend, even though she was married - the GREAT BIG STAR he writes of in his memoir), green snot poured out of his nose. She opened her eyes at that moment and screamed "Oh, how horrible" and jumped out of the bed running off set. That aside, the film is a benchmark of how to film a tragic romance, in the golden year for Hollywood of 1939. They were fantastic at capturing the essence of a story. Tellingly, the Americans of that time were completely enamoured of Europe, and so many were actually from Europe.

Fine score from Newman, its main theme one of the most memorable romantic melodies in Hollywood history. Lovely touches of orchestral colour throughout this selection, especially "The Moors"....

They don't make them like this anymore. The remakes can't even come close to the classic this one is.
