He was here 60 years old and had been singing for over 35 years - still marvellous, as he was when I last heard him when he was nearly 70. I heard all the great tenors of the time, and two stand out: Vickers for his dramatic power and Kraus for his suavity and elegance.

His coloratura is so graceful. It does not sound mechanical as others' do. He used his coloratura as an extention of emotional state rather than a show off of his singing ability ....thus renders his interpretation and execution a level above others'. As always.

Rossini's operas are part of the age of Bel Canto, along with those of Donizetti and Bellini. This style of composing, designed to accentuate the beauty and technical virtuosity of the singer. gave way, through later Romantic composers, particularly Verdi, to a less florid style of singing and more balance between music and drama. The Romantic period reached its peak with the music of Wagner. Florid singing was not Kraus' forte, although he was one of the greatest tenors of all time.

No entiendo por qué decían que a don Alfredo kraus no se le daban las coloraturas las agilidades...la verdad que lo que se escucha es excelentísimo ...una verdadera lección de Bel canto con todas esas dinámicas perfectas!! Bravo gran maestro kraus!!

Not to mention we have only his word to describe the encounter that had allegedly happened in 1958 ,it isn't corroborated by any other source

Kraus, in my opinion, was the greatest tenor of the 20th century. However, he did not have the ear or liking for the Rossini repertoire. He always shined in the more romantic repertoire. His technique, however, was never matched by any other tenor, and very few other singers of his time.

"Never matched by any other tenor, and few other singers of his time" Either you consider tenors not to be singers , or you believe Kraus' technique was matched only by sopranos , baritones,etc, just not tenors . Either way,it's so ridiculous I couldn't stop laughing for a full minute . Then I read your other comment where you say florid singing wasn't Kraus' forte . You seem to be impervious to contradictions .If his technique was allegedly so great ,florid singing would have been piece of cake for him .

Kraus le falta agilidad ni comparacion con un Alva, un Blake, o un JDF, los agudos si los tiene pero NO ES UN TENOR LIGERO, no tiene las agilidades propias para un Rossini, lo siento, es maravilloso para Traviata, Lucia, Boheme, Tosca, pero Rossini..hummmmmm, cada uno en lo suyo.

ANGEL COSTA evidentemente no tenes la mas remota idea de lo que estas hablando...una voz liviana y plenamente articulada con una media voz pareja un excelso manejo del fiato y encima terminas hablando una burrada como que el maestro cantaba o debió cantar "Tosca" eso dice todo lo que ud. Sabe de opera, voces o tecnica vocal...saluditos!

@@cachoguitar1 Este señor se permite escribir en una página suya artículos de ópera y ya le he leído varias barbaridades. El otro día me decía sobre los distintos tipos de tenores q yo comentaba (ligero, lírico ligero, spinto etc) q era un error mío. Según él todo tenor es lírico. Yo le contesté q no un tenor, un cantante q canta ópera es un cantante lírico. Ahora leo lo de Tosca y me quedo muerto. La gente es muy osada. Además en sus comentarios lo peor es q se cree q sabe y se le nota q no le gusta kraus. Con lo cual demuestra todavía más su ignorancia y atrevimiento.

My gosh… so badly judged. Funereal tone, too slow, no hope. Rosina won’t fall in love with this Lindoro. The usual precision in Kraus singing, albeit late-ish Kraus, there but no attempt at character building or an understanding what’s going on. Opera is theatre my friends. And this is very bad theatre. He could and usually did much better than this.
