The aria Ecco ridente in cielo is from Rossini's opera The Barber of Seville.
The recordings on the video are as follows;
0:00 Fernando De Lucia Rec 1918
4:23 José Mojica Rec 1925
7:37 Tito Schipa Rec 1926
10:45 Giuseppe Di Stefano (live) Rec 1949 (Mexico)
14:13 Alfredo Kraus Rec date ?
17:53 Fritz Wunderlich Rec 1966
21:12 Luigi Alva Rec 1970?
24:32 Nicolai Gedda Rec 1974
I've tried to get the best from the audio but the De Lucia and Mojica recordings are still not very good. I've omitted the orchestral introduction on all but the first recording.
My KZfaq friend Rosa Angela who introduced to the singing of José Mojica has told me that after a successful career in music and film in the 1920s and 30s he gave all his wealth to the poor of Mexico and Peru and became a Priest.
Fernando De Lucia had the great honour of singing at the funeral of Enrico Caruso.
A translation of the aria is as follows;
Ecco, ridente in cielo
spunta la bella aurora,
e tu non sorgi ancora
e puoi dormir cosi'?
Sorgi, mia dolce speme,
vieni, bell'idol mio;
rendi men crudo, oh Dio,
lo stral che mi feri'.
Oh sorte! gia' veggo
quel caro sembiante;
quest'anima amante
ottenne pieta'.
Oh istante d'amore!
Oh dolce contento!
Felice momento
che eguale non ha!
Here, laughing in heaven
emerges the beautiful dawn,
and you are not awake yet
you can sleep like this?
Arise, my sweet hope,
come, my dear idol;
Render less painful, oh God,
The arrow that wounds me.
Oh destiny! I see now
that dear countenance;
this loving soul
has obtained mercy.
Oh moments of love!
Oh sweet contentedness!
Precious moment
It has no equal!

@@michaelmcgrailengland Jadlowker sang 96 times at the Met. opera and in 1910 was singing the Cav. as Caruso was Canio in the Pagliacci. They knew each other and Caruso was a admirer also of Jadlowker and of course vica versa!

Since you included great singers of long ago, it's only IMO that you someday hear the wonderful tenor, a big voiced spinto "Herman Jadlowker", (in this aria,) a tenor back then who included in his Rep. (As many did back then, " like Slezak " ) His recording of it for a large voice is one of the greats for it, great also for his cadenza's and his ability at trills also.) He was born in 1877 (and Caruso was a great fan of his) and when around 1910 Jadlowker was singing at the Met. , Caruso and a friend attended and where told (by the probably young usher) at the Met. not to yell Bravo so loudly, as Caruso was so moved by tenor Jadlowker, he and the other man, his good friend both giving Jadlowker many Bravo's, causing the not in the know usher to approach them!!!

Of courses Slezak didn't sing the aria or opera that I know of but he could sing Lyrically as did Jadlokwer, it seems back then many singers sang both big verismo and Lyric roles, today that isn't done much anymore .

Thanks for your message. Yes, I've heard of Jadlowker but I've never actually listened to him, I've always tended to stick to my old favourites like Caruso, McCormack, Schmidt, Tauber Gigli and Bjorling but I have extended to some extent since I started my KZfaq channel and people like yourself have recommended other singers. I have listened to Jadlowker now and, as you say, he was a great singer. I might do another video of this aria and include him and another that I missed that a very nice Russian lady has mentioned, Sergey Lemeshev which is also a very fine recording. That's an intereseting story about Caruso.

It's my pleasure Sheila, I'm glad that you enjoyed the video, Unfortunately neither Caruso, McCormack nor Bjorling tackled this aria, I'm sure John McCormack could have made a good job of it. I'm having a bit of a rest at the moment because on 1st Sept KZfaq made some changes that have badly effected my channel and, presumably, a lot of others. They've stopped recommending my videos and, as a result, views are less than half and subscribers have stopped increasing. I expect that they would like to be rid of minority interest channels and just have those that attract the masses and give them a large income from advertisers. Money always seems to be the main driving force with the big companies. Thanks again for listening.

That‘s such a beautiful aria you chose for your latest video, Michael, a tidbit for every tenor with a shining, smooth and agile lyrical voice… As usual I’ve secretly picked my favourites (which was very hard this time) but please, let this stay between just the two of us since all of the singers and renditions have their personal, undeniable merits… 😉 … the most unexpected „discovery“ being José Mojica… All of your choices were excellent, showing a very nice variety of voices and singing styles - and most of them (the recordings, not the singers) were actually new to me… Very delightful! ⭐️⭐️⭐️ Brilliant sound and lovely photos… Thank you very much for the marvelous video! 🙏🍀

@@michaelmcgrailengland That was very well done by Rosa Angela! I find her comments often on various channels; she must be a lovely lady and I‘m therefore happy that she‘s one of your faithful subscribers! Just lately I had a conversation with a listener (not present on your channel) who wrote how much he resented translations in opera, because they are always inferior to the original. They often are, though, in my opinion, not always, not when they are well done. I didn‘t think much about it; subject was an Italian aria sung by Heinrich Schlusnus, and the listener mentioned that he was glad Schlusnus didn‘t perform in German. So far, so good. His next comment was about an aria from „Mignon“ performed by Lotte Lehmann - in German. We all know that the original libretto is in French, but the aria is the first verse of a famous German poem by Goethe, which means that actually the German lyrics were the original ones and the libretto used a translation. I then stumbled over more of this gentleman‘s comments where he‘s full of praise for Italian versions of French operas… So, obviously, his ranting wasn‘t about translations at all, he just hates the German language but doesn‘t want to admit it. The hypocrite! I almost laughed out loud when I realized how I fell for his bogus arguments. To cut a long story short, I completely agree that Fritz Wunderlich‘s singing was excellent! But I must admit that in my opinion the German translation got in the way somehow… It wasn‘t exactly a lucky strike, often using mutated vowels (like Ü - it was mainly Üs) in prominent parts of phrases, even in coloratura, where these vowels simply don‘t sound beneficial… So, yes, in this case I would have much preferred had he performed in Italian. But since this obviously wasn‘t an option, he took on the challenge and made the best of what he got - and really, his voice is absolutely marvelous. Now that you are probably suitably bored, I‘m finally done with my babbling. 😃 Thank you for your always kind answers! And for all of your great posts! And for not mentioning that I can be a terrible nuisance… As always, warm regards!!! 🍀🌹🌞🌺🌼🍀

Hello Seamus, thanks for listening, I'm glad that you like the video. To be honest, I know very little about the technical side of singing and providing there are no obvious technical imperfections and I like the sound of it that's good enough for me. I like the way Fernando De Lucia interprets the music and I think Rossini could well have approved. De Lucia had the great honour of singing at Caruso's funeral in 1921. Unfortunately many of his recordings were made as far back as 1902 and are difficult to enhance. Thanks again for listening.
