Traffic snarl ups especially in Kenya's capital city of Nairobi have been there for years as the following story would seek to confirm. And some thirty five years ago a middle aged man was greatly inconvenienced when he found himself caught up in a traffic jam lasting up to six hours. That day Abdul Wahid, now 63 years old, decided to offer himself as part of the solution to traffic jams. "traffic" as Wahid is popularly known has been directing motorists since then in Eastleigh with his trademark whip and stick. Sally Mbilu spent a day with him, to find out, just why he does it and with so much zeal.

This guy looks like the equivalent of "common sense" on grid-locked roads. If you never give an inch in a busy city - blocking junctions etc. ... you make it so that the whole system is locked. So YOU are always stuck, because you locked up the junction that would have got traffic moving. Which makes YOU mad, because it's hardly moving - which makes you block up the next junction, giving up even less of an inch! If EVERYONE adopts this rule - as largely shown in the video: When you see someone needing to pull out at a junction - let one through, then block the rest. That's it - let one through, then block. Repeat after me "I will let one through in front of me, then block". And again "I will let one through in front of me, then block". A whole city does that - then we're moving in a slow, orderly fashion. Eventually reaching our destination with minimal fuss. The alternative is as shown in the video - but without the self-appointed "traffic officer"! [London - are you listening?]

wow, this guy must love having control...i'm sure he would love to be a leader or a head of a company but i guess directing triaffic makes him feel fulfilled...or maybe he has mental illness and in his world he is a top cop....i wish he gave his time to stopping robbery in eastliegh and collecting all that trash in the street...that would be real charity and giving back to your community.
