Love the video guys! Fwiw, I think it's worth mentioning that while super effective the short fluro to braid is a little less forgiving and these finesse approaches are a little more suited to those with experience. Having come through the first part of the newbie curve I felt that having a good length of mono behind the fluro was a lot more forgiving and bridged some slight missteps in either the rod and/or technique being used; especially on a party boat. On my first wide-open day I landed 2 BFT and 3 YFT on a lighter setup and I was BEAT 😅 Just my $0.02. Keep up the awesome content!

You make a good point. We fish primarily private boats and you can mess with a fish for 30 minutes if you need to. As for pulling hooks, just use a circle and 10# of drag and you'll be fine. Good feedback. Thanks.

Honest question. I'm a newb to tuna fishing. Why not go for lighter braid too? On the 1st setup, you mention that you'll go for 60 or 50# braid. Why not something even lighter like 40 or 30? Make it even easier for the bait to pull?
@joshuasidley298
@joshuasidley298 4 ай бұрын
You definitely can change the braid to a lighter one, but braid diameter is much smaller than mono and having similar diameter lines makes knots better. Ex. 60lb braid diameter is equal to about 20lb mono. Additionally you are prepared for the bigger fish if you run into them with the 50-60lb braid

@@joshuasidley298 ah! makes sense. I'm coming over from mostly bass fishing where the diameter wasn't that much of a concern, at least for me. Just tried to keep things within 10 lbs of each other. Going from 60 to 20 seemed like a big jump. I"m planning on going tuna fishing for the first time this summer, and I'm putting together my setups. I was going to put 30lb braid on my Avet sx G2 tied on to 20 or 25# fluoro leaders, but looks like I'll have to pay more attention to the diameters. Thanks for the response!

I use the 60# or 50# as a minimum as it just fills up the reel faster. You get more line capacity than you'll ever use and save some money.

Not sure i understand the comment about rod weight rating. Why would it matter if it is mono or spectra? Isn’t breaking strength what the rating range if for regardless of the type of line? You also mention backing the larger set up with 60lb braid on a Carnage rod weighted for 30-50lbs. If i heard that correctly, can you explain why you line your reel at 15% over rod rating? Hoping your knowledge can teach me something here as i am looking to purchase 3-4 carnage rods to match up with my internationals and fathoms.

Rods used to be rated by the suggested mono you woudl fish on that rod. Now sometimes they have a mono and braid rating. The point is, when we say rated for 20-40# line, we are talking about the mono rating. That's it. The reason for the heavier braid on the smaller reels is simple, it fills the reel. You can put 30-40# braid on there but it's going to take 50% more line that you are never going to see and if you do see it, it's probably too late. haha

Rod line rating is just BS. In my opinion, it gives you an idea of when the rod will "shut off." The rod will handel much heavier line than it is rated at obviously. But when fishing a "30 lb" rated rod, at around 10 pounds of drag, the rod will provide its max mechanical advantage. It will have reached its max bending capacity. Is they way it was explained to me. I could be entirely mistaken, but it made more sense than a 30lb line rating.
