Brilliant analysis man! ANYTHING from Alice in Chains Unplugged set will show you a new level of Melancholy, dark, hard hitting lyrics. At the point of recording this he was relatively healthy but by the time Unplugged was recorded his health had drastically diminished due to his addiction. The raw pain in his vocals is haunting I swear. The worst part is it took another 6 years for his addiction to finally kill him after years of being a recluse following the death of his fiancé. Layne Staley's Alice in Chains are simply incredible.

Great breakdown Bro. I lived in Seattle from 89 to 99 went to live shows all the time. IMHO Alice In Chains were the best band at the time. Live they killed it all the time. They have a lot of great songs, Would, Down in a hole, Rooster, Damn that river come to mind as good reaction songs.

AIC with Layne was my favorite of all the grunge bands. This performance has to rank near the top of best live performances. Laynes voice still gives me chills and I never get tired of their music. Although I'm fully aware of the meaning of this song, your reaction was spot on and useful for those who are not familiar. I'd like to see you react to "rain when I die and nutshell". It's crazy how so many people are still getting into AiC and loving their music. With how Nirvana is like the most commercially successful grunge band and Pearl Jam is still going and probably more popular overall you would think AiC might have fizzled out in terms of popular support but I think the emotional power and daring subject matter that Layne never shied away from has made his work totally immortal. Anyone who takes the time to listen and feel and think about his songs can't deny the depth and pure artistry of it.

Adding another comment to say…this song is not so much about her treating him badly. In interviews he said he treated a girl badly and felt guilty about it and this song was his expression of that shame and guilt and a way to confront his own behaviour. What this song is about is frustration with himself versus who he would rather be. Cathartic, emotional and mind blowing performance.

Every song from this show, live at the Moore is completely amazing. Bleed the Freak, is one of my favs from it. It was the last song of the set and he sings it with such ease, as if he hasn't been singing his lungs out for forty minutes. The guy was just amazing...RIP Layne

That "uphill" comment gets me every time. It seems like all the old folks talked about how long they had to walk to school and I guess that's quite common. When I heard that years ago on live that shit got me. The best vocalists that's ever lived in my opinion. My sister dated Mike when I was younger and I was lucky enough to see layne and demri a few times, although I was young and couldn't appreciate the moment. Dude was special.
