Jerry Cantrell"s guitar tone is absolute perfection and his performance is legendary. His contribution is so often overshadowed by Layne Staley's vocal work because it is masterful to say the least. To those of us that claim Rick and roll to be ours, this band and the music they created is a gift indeed. I am very grateful and fortunate to have seen them live several times.
@chrisdowning63967 ай бұрын
Damn, I am so jealous.. I, unfortunately, never got to see them live.. pretty much because I was born in 1985, so I was only 10 when they were pretty much done touring, and everything. I do want to go and see Alice in Chains now, with the new singer. Of course no where near as good as Layne, but still pretty good. I really like the, "Black gives way to blue", song they did with Elton John on the piano.. which made it that much more awesome...

@@chrisdowning6396 I never gave any thought to the 'new' AIC, but I have to tell you, I listened to Rainier Fog (2018 release) once all the way through and it didn't leave my home audio system for a good 3 months. This song is just so complex. It's very minimalistic with the music and the empty space that is filled by the power, range, and melody of Layne's voice. Layne could sing this in a foreign language and you'd still know exactly what this song was about. It's easy to use hyperbole when not appropriate ... but in this case, it's an understatement to say that this song at this concert is just brilliant and beautiful. This is a song that only a handful of singers could actually sing.

Did you know that they once worked together in a studio and recorded a song for Alice In Chains called Right Turn, on that same track Cornell demonstrates his vocal ability and versatility that surpasses Layne's talent (which was no small feat either.) It's as if Layne is like a blacksmith's shop, and Cornell is a Rolls-Royce, both are good, but one really is the best overall.
@vitorkaique57825 ай бұрын
Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range. However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nc5iY9Rkqd6cgn0.html&pp=ygUQYmV5b25kIHRoZSB3ZWxsIA%3D%3D Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl. Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.

Layne was truly in a league of his own. The kind of vocal sound so many other singers tried to emulate. Layne just did it effortlessly. He didn't have to try to sound dark or tortured, that was just his natural voice. I miss him so much.
@vitorkaique57822 жыл бұрын
You are thinking with your heart to claim Layne for issues and not with your head. In terms of vocal technique, Cornell reached 6-8 octaves and he could climb 4 feet in only one song like Beyond The Weel he was one of the greatest singers in terms of vocal technique, outside that his voice is a factor of the junction of 4 dimensions: range, power, volume and depth. His vocals were so amazing that even women who have an ease in reaching the tones, had difficulty checking out the tribute they did to him. Cornell was blessed by the universe, his voice is one of the most powerful that exists and this is undeniable in terms of talent as a vocalist.

Layne seemed so healthy here, in his prime. He was such a good looking boy. And voice was so perfectly pure. No drugs yet. It's hard to believe that for this gig Layne was only 5 years younger than at MTV Unplugged... In 1996, only 5 years after that gig, Layne seemed 20 years older, and his voice, even though still beautiful, lost its purity. Layne died 11 years later, but his descent was so long and painful...

@@diamondsareforever7796 Layne started heroin in 1991. So he was still out of it at the time of this gig. Even though his performance at the MTV Unplugged show in 1996 was mindblowing, his voice had lost most of its power. That's why songs like Love Hate Love or Man in The Box were not part of the setlist for MTV Unplugged : he would not have been able to scream as perfectly as he used to do few years before. And you can notice that the tripod album (1995) doesn't contain any song where Layne screams...
@diamondsareforever7796 Жыл бұрын
Well yeah over time he lost his teeth. But still could belt out some notes that most herion/crack addicts couldn't, still in 1996 etc etc. He injected so his chest was not full of crap, trust me he wouldn't even be able to talk with out struggling to breathe if he were smoking one if not both. Just I do not think anyone has the right to say he was or wasn't on drugs here or there? We really do not know that answer. And you can't believe everything you read. But yes he suffered a long old time. He had money on tap, many others do not. Which in itself is worse or some would say better? He didn't have to wake up go and graft then hunt down a dealer whicb is even more tiring etc etc. Hence why it didn't take to long for his down fall.
