Just imagine if Kurt and layne were still around today, well not even today, let's just say to around the mid 2000's and always touring on top of their game so to speak, nirvana and Alice in chains would be the 2 biggest bands the world by a mile, millions more kids would listen to this kind of music as opposed to the shit on the radio today, I wish I was old enough in the early 90's to experience all this when it happened...

Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range. However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nc5iY9Rkqd6cgn0.html&pp=ygUQYmV5b25kIHRoZSB3ZWxsIA%3D%3D Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl. Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.

@@Kubojah3D If he didn't care about his fans, then why did it hurt him so much to see how his fans were impacted? He never wanted his fans to follow his steps in the wrong direction. Even then... if that was the case, why does it even matter? Fact is, it's about the music. Not the fans. The fans can assist the musicians financially, sure. Well, this was recorded when he was in the "h really is a great drug" stage. I'm not sure, but I doubt he shot up back then. Even if he did, since you where an addict too, you know what it felt like when the drug still worked for you and you thought everything is under control. It took Layne a few more years to realize he's sick and that's when the live performances either lacked the energy and greatness of this one or where canceled. My point, it does not surprise me he put up that performance although he was probably wasted.

Jerry can lay down the meanest riffs as good or as close to Tony Iommi or play a solo with the most feel like David Gilmour can not to mention he's an incredible songwriter as evidenced in AIC and his solo albums. He has that rare ability of being a good guitarist and composer but he never overdoes the riffs or solos. They're always tasteful - its what the song needs.

Layne Staley had an incredible voice. It pains me to see how many people don't know who this sweet angel was, and still is. A sweet soul, with a gift that helped me from one of the deepest depressions I've ever experienced. I lost my whole family from cancer and this man, Jerry, Sean, and Mike helped me process my pain and loss. I love all you guys. You've saved so many people's lives. I hope you know this. Agreed. But the quality that gets me is how explosive his voice is. It's like the gates to another, faster dimension bursts open and a prolonged energy spills out. Not spills, it's like a constant attack of raw energy released at such force that it obliterates everything. I can't explain it properly. It's the sudden-ness of his vocal attack that is amazing to me. And it just doesn't stop until he says it stops.

Jerry Cantrell"s guitar tone is absolute perfection and his performance is legendary. His contribution is so often overshadowed by Layne Staley's vocal work because it is masterful to say the least. Damn, I am so jealous.. I, unfortunately, never got to see them live.. pretty much because I was born in 1985, so I was only 10 when they were pretty much done touring, and everything. I do want to go and see Alice in Chains now, with the new singer. Of course no where near as good as Layne, but still pretty good. I really like the, "Black gives way to blue", song they did with Elton John on the piano.. which made it that much more awesome...

This song is just so complex. It's very minimalistic with the music and the empty space that is filled by the power, range, and melody of Layne's voice. Layne could sing this in a foreign language and you'd still know exactly what this song was about. It's easy to use hyperbole when not appropriate ... but in this case, it's an understatement to say that this song at this concert is just brilliant and beautiful. This is a song that only a handful of singers could actually sing.

Did you know that they once worked together in a studio and recorded a song for Alice In Chains called Right Turn, on that same track Cornell demonstrates his vocal ability and versatility that surpasses Layne's talent (which was no small feat either.) It's as if Layne is like a blacksmith's shop, and Cornell is a Rolls-Royce, both are good, but one really is the best overall.

You are thinking with your heart to claim Layne for issues and not with your head. In terms of vocal technique, Cornell reached 6-8 octaves and he could climb 4 feet in only one song like Beyond The Weel he was one of the greatest singers in terms of vocal technique, outside that his voice is a factor of the junction of 4 dimensions: range, power, volume and depth. His vocals were so amazing that even women who have an ease in reaching the tones, had difficulty checking out the tribute they did to him. Cornell was blessed by the universe, his voice is one of the most powerful that exists and this is undeniable in terms of talent as a vocalist.

Layne seemed so healthy here, in his prime. He was such a good looking boy. And voice was so perfectly pure. No drugs yet. It's hard to believe that for this gig Layne was only 5 years younger than at MTV Unplugged... In 1996, only 5 years after that gig, Layne seemed 20 years older, and his voice, even though still beautiful, lost its purity. Layne died 11 years later, but his descent was so long and painful...

Layne in 1996 is a ghost.

@@diamondsareforever7796 Layne started heroin in 1991. So he was still out of it at the time of this gig. Even though his performance at the MTV Unplugged show in 1996 was mindblowing, his voice had lost most of its power. That's why songs like Love Hate Love or Man in The Box were not part of the setlist for MTV Unplugged : he would not have been able to scream as perfectly as he used to do few years before. And you can notice that the tripod album (1995) doesn't contain any song where Layne screams...

Well yeah over time he lost his teeth. But still could belt out some notes that most herion/crack addicts couldn't, still in 1996 etc etc. He injected so his chest was not full of crap, trust me he wouldn't even be able to talk with out struggling to breathe if he were smoking one if not both. Just I do not think anyone has the right to say he was or wasn't on drugs here or there? We really do not know that answer. And you can't believe everything you read. But yes he suffered a long old time. He had money on tap, many others do not. Which in itself is worse or some would say better? He didn't have to wake up go and graft then hunt down a dealer whicb is even more tiring etc etc. Hence why it didn't take to long for his down fall.

Some of his beats are fairly simple but a lot of times he'll throw out some really tight and technical stuff, I'm a drummer and still mess up the hi-hat/tom combo from "Head Creeps"
