When 2:34 happened, my brain stopped working and I was stumbling over my words and speechless for a flat 30 seconds. The stark contrast in power and rawness between that "yeah" scream and the many lines of buildup that came before it had me "shook," as they say. That scream easily raised the energy in the room. You can even hear a guy in the audience going "hohhh" right afterwards.

I remember back in January 1993, I went to see Alice In Chains at Aragon Ballroom in Chicago. It was my second ever concert (Cheap Trick was my first), but this was the first for a band I really enjoyed and knew all the songs. Meanwhile, they used this song to open it up and they had a curtain up in front of the band and all you could see were there shadows. You could tell it was Layne Staley by the way his nose stuck out. Right when the song got loud, the curtain dropped. It was one of the coolest moments I have ever witnessed. This, along with "Would?" and "Down in a Hole" is my favorite Alice In Chains song. That moment and the fact that my grandfather was in World War 2 (yes, I know the songs about Vietnam, but it still resonants the same). Good memories over at Aragon and The Metro

A scratchy, shaky old school videotape recording of a gig in 1993, and it rocks. I've just watched the 2020 museum of pop culture or whatever, tribute to AIC, which was pumped all over KZfaq in the last few days. Lots of famous bands and vocalists covering AIC songs. Not one of them had a proper handle on Layne Stayley. he really was a rare talent. He totally fucking "had it." His voice had a real power to it. I shouldn't be surprised Alice in Chains are so celebrated now, a full 30 years on.

And I agree that Layne definitely had it going on more than Kurt and you're not alone in that observation. And let's give credit where credit is due, Pearl Jam is also a great band. Two different styles, both equally gifted. And thank God Pearl Jam is still around kicking it strong because they're keeping that era alive!

LMAO Jerry plays the wrong chord and Layne looked over and glared at him like "What the f^$#ing hell was that?!" LOL Layne's vocal range could run Saturn rings around any other grunge singer out there (including Chris Cornell, IMO). Layne NEVER needed auto tune until about 1998 when he had no teeth and lisp and even then he still killed the vocals. Barrett Martin said that Layne's voice was so powerful, Barrett was on the side of the stage and could hear the resonance from Layne's voice come out of his chest before it ever hit the mic and speakers. There will never be another singer like Layne.

Layne Staley reminds me of Ozzy Osbourne, not in terms of having a similar voice, but in that both sound so haunting and fit really well over those brutal riffs their guitarists play. Great performance.

Yeah, Jerry wrote everything. He was/IS the entire band. Layne shot that look bc he was surprised, not bc he was dismayed. Let's not confuse what this band was/is: an insanely talented musician and an insanely talented vocalist/backing band. This band was/is absolutely nothing without Jerry Cantrell - he is God tier. Period.
@turns2ashes
@turns2ashes 2 жыл бұрын
@@85geoffm Jerry did not write everything. But he is a legend. Live music is about mistakes as much as it is about perfection, emotion and energy. Also, the statement about Jerry being everything has been disproven by current AIC. The Jerry and Layne combo created perfection, one alone did not.

If Layne were dope sick, he wouldn't be putting out enough power to light up a nation. So the answer to your question is simply him probably feeling jet lagged which can make a person not feel so hot. But seriously, why must we continue to associate the greatest vocalist EVER, with his addiction issues? He deserves so much better. RIP Sweet Laynegel ♥
