Overdose. He battled to the end with a heroin addiction.

@@RobSquadReactions He had been fighting heroin addiction for years. At the end of his life, he became a recluse. Family and friends would visit him in his apartment occasionally, but he mostly lived a life of solitude. His accountant noticed that no one had taken money out of his bank account in about two weeks, so they called the police to do a wellness check. The police found him in his apartment, dead of a speedball overdose. He had been dead for about two weeks by the time they found him. Reportedly, he had lost all his teeth, weighed just 85 pounds (he was about 6’ tall), and was sitting on the couch with the needle still sticking out of his leg when they found him. A truly tragic end for a great talent.

I remember as well. It was a dark day.

It's kinda hard to recommend songs cause there's too many good ones, but some of my favorites I'd recommend are Would?, Rooster, Bleed the Freak, Man in a Box, Rain When I Die, Down in a Hole, Sunshine..the list goes on lol. Once you get a vibe for them also check out some of their live performances at the Moore and their MTV Unplugged set. All good stuff!

Jerry Cantrell always gets overlooked as a vocalist. Layne Staley fans seem to never give Jerry Cantrell credit as a singer making Alice in Chains harmonies unique to rock.

And the heavier it gets he gets more into it.

That was definitely out of my box but I loved it in the lead singer‘s voice does all the grit he had and when he sang was awesome

Grunge 1998-1999. I went to see Alice in Chains Concert in 1992. They were awesome.

So sad that out of the 4 amazing bands mentioned in this comment all but 1 are now deceased. So, so, sad! RIP Kurt, Scott, and Layne.

Layne was an extremely intelligent, humorous, and gracious human being, and he cared about things like politeness and kindness to strangers, qualities that seem to be forgotten in today’s narcissistic, nihilistic culture. He laughed easily and talked openly with his fans, and his guest list at shows was always reserved for the young, marginalized people who couldn’t afford to buy a ticket. Those were Layne’s people, the ones without a voice, and through the power of poetic language, Layne gave them a voice. Jerry wrote ROOSTER about his father's experiences in Vietnam and when Jerry saw his dad in the audience at one of their shows, Jerry asked Layne (and the guys) to play Rooster and they did. It was the first time Jerry's dad heard Jerry's music and knew that his son understood him through that song. It brought Jerry and his dad closer together. And Layne had a vital part in that reunion. (Meanwhile, Layne's own biological father was an opportunist) Jerry met Layne just as his whole world blew up with his grandmother and mother dying within 5 months of each other. He lost the house within the year. He had no home, little money left. Layne (drunkenly) offered Jerry a place to live and a job at the Music Bank (a 50-room rehearsal hall where Layne stayed and worked letting bands in and locking up when the bands left). Layne had done so much for Jerry, giving him a place to live, money, clothes, food, guitars and gear, a band when he gave Jerry the number to contact Sean Kinney and through him, bass player Mike Starr. Layne gave Jerry a life that could NOT fail unless Jerry let it happen. But getting a front-row seat to watch what had happened to Layne over the years, Jerry had to watch his best friend deteriorate in a span of 12 years (1990-2002), and Jerry couldn't do anything about it. Jerry had talked himself blue in the face but Layne didn't want help. Alice In Chains was a band, but they were also a family. They had internal issues just like any family. Whenever Jerry wanted Alice In Chains to work on something, he ALWAYS wanted Layne to sing. He never thought of replacing Layne while Layne was still alive. Layne encouraged Jerry to sing more, after all, they were Jerry's lyrics he should sing them. Vice-versa, Jerry encouraged Layne to play the guitar which is how you get Layne playing guitar on HATE TO FEEL and ANGRY CHAIR as well as I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING on the Mad Season Above album. Jerry encouraged him on the guitar and was proud that Layne grew as a guitarist. Tom Morello of Rage Against the Machine taught Layne more chords than ANGRY CHAIR and HATE TO FEEL. The friendship between Jerry and Layne was unbreakable. Jerry NEVER once thought of replacing Layne as the singer while Layne was still alive. He always wanted Layne to sing whenever he had AIC do something. If there were ever cosmic soulmates ... Layne and Jerry would be it. (And by that I mean, they were Sympatico with each other. The way they sang together was a perfect pitch where two voices make one. What you hear and see between Jerry and Layne was a genuine friendship. They looked after each other. When one had problems with a song, the other picked up the slack. They were a team. Jerry was doing a solo concert in Charlotte, NC when he heard that Layne was found two weeks after he died and Jerry was trying to get through the concert and crying. He did shows between the time he found out about Layne until Layne's funeral because if he had taken a break then, he didn't think he'd want to continue anything later after the mourning period. When Layne died, it was like losing a loved one, a family member, you don't think of the fights you had with the person who died. You defend their memory. There is a reason Jerry wrote NO EXCUSES about Layne and the line "You, my friend, I will defend / And if we change, well, I'll love you anyway." There definitely is not enough space in a book-long comment to explain Layne's voice and what he was able to do with it, how he stacked his own vocals with harmonies and melodies underneath... how he could come up with those lyrics, harmonies, melodies off the top of his head, and what he could do with his voice live.
