What you're hearing on the guitar is that it's fed through "wah" distortion. It's such a distinct sound (or maybe they're feeding it through a talk-box at points, as well; I've noticed wah and talkbox sound close to each other quite often). Jimi Hendrix is probably the prophet of "wah" in rock, because he showed what you could do with it in a way that spawned millions of imitators.

The message of the song is the conflict of faith: the man in the box - he feels like his future is predestined. Lane sings about saving his eyes (chorus: "Can you sew them shut?"); cries out to Jesus Christ (chorus: "Deny your Maker!"); Lane: he who tries (chorus: "Will be wasted."). The struggle of humanity - and the video implies that, in the end, faith loses. Very cathartic. Lesson: regardless of the challenges put in front of us, we must always strive to become saints. Not sure that is the message Lane & Co. wanted to project in the video, but it's what I take from it. We are failed beings, but in most cases the greatest impediment to our redemption lurks within us.

Great song. The genre is grunge, based in Seattle. Vocalist Layne Staley, passed in 2002 from overdose speedball. The riff you refer to is the bassist Mike Starr. Best friends, Mike was with Layne the night he died. Layne was really sick but refused to let Mike call 911. They argued and Mike stormed out. Two weeks later Layne’s badly decomposed body was found in his home. Mike blamed himself for many years and suffered debilitating addiction and mental anguish, finally succumbing to addiction in 2011, overdosing on prescription drugs. Grunge has left a trail of overdoses and suicide. Starting with Cobain, Weiland, Cornell, Bennington… to name a few. Never a fan of the sound but I appreciate talent. Grunge abruptly ended my 80s rock era. Unforgivable.

The guitar technique is actually two techniques put together. Jerry Cantrell is alternating between “palm muting” and open strings while using a Wah Pedal to create the “wah-wah” sound. The result of the Wah Pedal is similar to taking the Bass and Treble knobs on your equalizer from 0 to 10 and back to 0 again really quickly. The short “thumpy” notes are the result of Palm Muting which is where the guitarists strumming hand slightly lays on the strings so the notes play but do not ring out.

These won't get the votes, but my faves include "We Die Young," "No Excuses," and "It Ain't Like That."

We die young !!! I was lucky enough to see AIC on their first tour and I remember Layne saying that they made an awesome video for the song and MTV never played it once !

There is a great KZfaq video where someone played samples of Layne Staley, Scott Wieland, Chris Cornell, Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder without the music. It was incredible!

Rock/Metal are the best genres of music, people who disagree are simply asleep like your girl was, now she has awakened and understands how powerful it really is.

This song kept me sane and alive in my early 20s. The knowledge that pain is universal was a revelation.

Amber would appreciate "Down in a Hole" unplugged, live version. It's a starting point for AIC.

I heard they didn’t sing it for unplugged bc Layne couldn’t get thru it… it’s especially haunting now that Layne is gone.

I would also recommend “Rain when I die” by AIC. I remember how mind blown 🤯 I was when I first discovered their Dirt album. I couldn’t stop listening. Great reaction guys 👍🏼👏🏼🙌🏼👋🏼💜🇨🇦

Rain When I Die is awesome. Dam That River too. Most of my favorite AIC songs are the ones nobody talks about

Dude, you can't imagine the fire and energy there was at the beach as this song was blasting out of the speakers of the beach bar at camp pendleton back in 1991!!! I remember that time as a kid. All the marines were turned up when this was on. it was a badass time. RHCP's "suck my kiss" was also freshly out back then... rock music in the early 90s was so raw and innovative back then. You couldn't resist it when you heard it back then.

That is the "wah wah effect on guitar. I love how much you have grown! It wasn't that long ago you said you weren't a big rock fan. Now you seem to enjoy the harder riffs and appreciate the more complex nuances a live instrumentation.

Layne's voice was unique in the way his voice reverberates an octave below or above where he is actually singing depending on if he goes high or low. It gives of a natural distortion that creates the "magic" that people hear and feel and you just cant buy that no matter the quality of vocal coach or how much money you throw at them

If you haven’t done it you have to do Rooster by AIC. Gives me goosebumps. Or if you like the lead singer try River of deceit

My brother-in-law, Alvin Ray Carney could sing & play this song perfectly. He was killed in a hit & run in Houston, TX on Thanksgiving 2005. R.I.P. He loved Alice in Chains. We are from Hobart, OK.

Before the censors censored this song on the radio, "buried in my pit" and "shove my nose in spit" were "buried in my shit" and "shove my nose in shit."

Wait till you get a song with the harmonies between Layne and Jerry. My personal opinion is not to listen to "Nutshell" until you have a decent grasp of the band. It is very haunting and more of an ending than a beginning.

Do Rooster next by far their best song. Also their lead guitarist Jerry Cantrell is from Oklahoma too

The effect on the guitar is from a "talkbox". The sound of the guitar is fed through a tube that can be manipulated by the mouth, so that the guitar sounds like a voice. It's featured on Joe Walsh's "Rocky Mountain Way" and Peter Frampton's "Do You Feel Like We Do"...

Its so nice and refreshing to see people who appreciate rock music's voices. I've encountered a lot of people who call it noise, screaming, grunting, etc...Its so nice to see appreciation.
