Brilliant songwriter. As a guitarist, he's not flashy at all. Sure there are other guitarist who are better - technically better - but Jerry is able to edit himself to know exactly what the song needs just right. His solo on Nutshell remains my favorite to this day. Its simple but he pours out his heart on that solo and every solo for that matter. Also really good vocalist who's gotten better with age and experience.

Please *stop* all this crap about Jerry Cantrell being underrated, these kind of comments are on almost every single AIC video. Jim Garrison Its all about how you feel at the moment as well. Jack Black said Led Zeppelin was the best rock and roll band of all time. And then he elaborated. "Better than the Beatles. Better than the Rolling Stones." Who's the best is definitely a personal thought or opinion. Sometimes I say Anselmo is the best. Other times Rob Halford. Other times Layne and still other times Chris Cornell. But Layne can belt out a tune. And its in his own style. Hard to compare to others in a way. But I think Halford has/had the best voice in all of rock and roll.

Why can't people just enjoy both bands instead of debating which is the best grunge band? Both bands have many amazing albums. Nirvana was the head of the movement and probably the one who introduced the genre to us all. AiC was the most soulful, relatable and artistic band. Nirvana and Alice In Chains were fans of each others' music, and Kurt Cobain had phrased his admiration for Layne Staley, many times. Why can't the fans do the same thing? Long live grunge.

@@h96573 grunge was a label that subpop basically manufactured to market all the Seattle bands. Most of these bands don’t sound anything like each other anyways. And for the record, the first band from Seattle to “make it big” was Soundgarden in 1989 with louder than love. That was the first album that got signed to a major label. There’s a great documentary called Hype that goes deep into the Seattle scene. There were two waves of bands, the first being in the late 80s with bands like Soundgarden, Green River, Mudhoney, Melvins, Tad, and Skin Yard. The second wave in the early 90s was the mainstream recognition with bands like Nirvana, AIC, Soundgarden, and Pearl Jam.

I was at my lowest point virtually overdosed on meth, and no signs of God anywhere to help me recuperate myself. Instead all that was there for me was the people I love and my music. So please take your opinions elsewhere or keep them to a point that they don't bash on what other people consider lifesaving. I know I'm late as shit, but the beauty of "power chords" is that they only consist of the root note and a perfect 5th above that root note; without playing the third note of the triad (which determines whether it carries a minor or major tonality) you can get away with some pretty nifty mode mixture, which is something AIC did a lot.

@@MegaDodgers13 I don't dislike Inez, he's solid. But he more or less blends in IMO. Starr had some really great great bass lines that were integral to a number of the AIC classics of the early years. Starr really stood out and made his presence felt.

Alice in Chains never disappoints. Why weren't they more appreciated back in the day? They deserved it more than anyone, in my opinion.

Because money is infinitely appreciated, not all great artists generate money with their great art, the art needs to fill a great social culture function and be positive or at least redeeming. Therefore they would actively avoid the spotlight. Alice was really bemoaning but redeeming in the pride of bad fate.

From someone who saw them many times in the early 90s, they were just about to right after Jar of Flies came out and they were set to hit the road sandwiched between Metallica and Suicidal Tendencies for the Shit Hits the Shed tour in 1994 when they had to bow out because of Layne Staley's drug addiction. After that shows became more and more scarce for them.

People did give them attention, imo. I think whatever higher being knew if they were bigger than maybe Layne would have deteriorated faster. He didn't like the media that much. That's what Grind is about.

More than 20 years have passed and I am still stuck with the feelings and emotions that I feel when listening to this song, damn I am a damn nostalgic sentimentalist who does not let go of the past for these and many Alice songs. I perfectly remember seeing the video on MTV for the first time and being amazed at such a beautiful and heavy song and my mother watering the garden, life has many turns

U are not to blame for considering urself to be so nostalgic. But, realistically, what else can u do but b still dumbfounded and amazed with the unique, amazing talent that came out in that era. The times we live in now will never create such talent. People are just so different nowadays, u just wonder if there will ever be a cool sounding vocalist and guitarist ever again.

Yeah, I'm a fan of AiC's more bare-bones, genuine songs like this, Nutshell and No Excuses. Their heavier metal stuff is awesome, but these songs are more powerful imo.

I'd classify this song as part of their "heavier metal stuff." I mean sure it's not the heaviest thing in the world but this is Alice in Chains we're talking about, not Napalm Death or Cannibal Corpse.

Such an underrated AIC tune. Such a sick ass unique sound yet still unmistakably Alice from Jerry's opening riff. Major/Minor, crazy timing, Sean's work was key as well. All solid ass musicians in their prime here.
